DUUUUUUUDE, I'm so glad you did it ! Thanks for this. Man, you're good at guessing what the lyrics are about without understanding a word of French. It's totally that, he's talking about his life and his career choices. He's faced a lot of polemics and controversies in France at the beginning of his career, but he's never changed who he is. If you want to listen to more French music (not just rap), let me know, I'll dig up some awesome things for you !
You should really try to listen to "l'odeur de l'essence". This guy knows how to say simply complex things, and a massive thank you for having readind the lyrics, you really went into it. Hi from France
Didn''t know your channel. Good pick on Orelsan. I wasn't a fan eraly in his career, but now that I'm older I kinda rediscover him. What I like is that he is not trying to fit in, or proove anything to anyone. He's doing his thing, speaking some real truth. BTW many people explained what PMU is (basically a pub where you can gamble and play lottery), but what he means is that in those pubs there are many "know better" people that critisize and speak about a subject without really knowing what they ar etakling about.
Sick reaction! PS: funny fact about this live performance, two hours earlier he was in Geneva doing a live show, flew back to Paris for that tv show and produced this masterpiece.... the man is a beast!
Orelsan explains that he isn't "normal" and despite the rather dark words about his life, he remains positive in the future and about the person he whishes to be. The also talks about the mistakes of the past ( witch sometimes refer to his old sounds where he was an insolent teenager who didn't care about anything. Sorry for my English i'm french ^^
Thanks for this react ! Orelsan is a very genius, he start the rap in 2004, if you want understand all of lyrics, lisen first album " Perdu D'avance" And 2nd " Le chant des sirènes" for understand the last ( "San" is on the last) In France, Orelsan is very respected and I happy when i see Americans people have a good reaction. Big Up' and Peace✌🏻
One of my favorite Orelsan songs! For fully understanding the impact it (and the whole album) had when it was released, you need to listen to more of his previous work, where he kept acting like a rebellious teenager, rejecting society ("Suicide social" is a good example), often violently. This 3rd album, "La fête est finie / The party's over", is not necessarily redemption, but more of a brutal realization that time has come to grow up, and not to keep pretending being a teenager ("you think you're Bart, but you're Mr.Burns", he said in this song, talking about himself). Some tracks of the album convey the same message, and other ones even put Orelsan in the role of an adult giving life advice to a teenager like he used to be ("Notes pour trop tard") or appeasing a child who faces dark aspects of the world we live in ("Tout va bien"). There are many more masterpieces in his work, but listening to these songs would at least give you a proper context and make deeper sense. Enjoy!
Hi, I'm French, you chose Orelsan to discover French rap, I really like what it does but I think there are many other rappers who do a very good job but a little less known, especially for non-French speakers The PMU is a place that allows you to bet or watch on horse races, drink a glass of alcohol or a cup of coffee, Or buy gambling created by "La Française des jeux" (the French games) which is a company of the French state
When you pass a PMU in France you always see people drinking whatever it's 9 AM or 9 PM in most french people's heads it's representing social failure thats the kind of place where you only see 50yo alcoholic all day i'll say
Love the video ! Just want to add some points because I think some lyrics may have lose their meaning in a too literal translation: "Mes nuits sont blanches et mes idées noires" -> In french, "white nights" means "sleepless night" and "black thoughts" means "dark thoughts" He's making a pun talking about colours to express the fact that he can't sleep and spent the night overthinking. "Vodka, Doliprane, maintenant j'anticipe" -> I don't think you may have this type of medication, but "Doliprane" are currently use for get over an hangover. So, as an adult now, he continue to drink like a teenager but he is forward-looking. "Ablaye et Skread, jvais jamais perdre" -> Ablaye and Skread are the nicknames of his producers since the beginning, Skread is also his composer on a lot of his songs. He tells them "he never gonna loose" and it's sounds like (at least for me) "thanks for believin in me and I never disappointing you" Orelsan are really into asian and japanese culture, so he likes to put some references of it in his work. "Gun-Kata" is a bullet ballet, that we can see in many action movies, especially in John Woo 's ones. As everyone says, he is the french voice of Saitama in the japanese anime "One Punch Man". His stage name is literally a reference to his passion for manga. His first name is Aurélien (AUREL = OREL, same pronouciation) and, SAN (in japanese) is added to a person's name for showing respect to someone older or wiser. As he said "San, means Sir" (and could also means 3). In his first album, one of this song said "Orel for my first name, San for the asian whores". So It's interesting because in this particuliar song, he finish by giving another signification of his stage name. Dunno if I can help with this (very) long comment. Sorry for my poor english too, I always try to improve myself in it. If you want to listen another of his song, should I suggest "Des histoires a raconter" even if It's a duo with his mate Gringe, the song is terrific and the clip too!
Another thing about the meaning of the number « 3 » : this song is part of his 3rd solo album (it’s actually the first of the track), he even talk about it « orelsan part 3 le dernier volet de la saga » / « orelsan part 3. The last volume of the saga » just like if it was a trilogy and with this albums he finishes what he started in 2009 with his first album. And I think it’s prête cool.
Doliprane is just a brand for paracetamol, also known as acetaminophen. It's not made for hangover, but for fever and pain (like headache), but it's cheap and easy to get, so it's often used for hangovers. And thanks for this long comment, really important for a better understanding, even if the translation was actually pretty good, I was afraid to have something way more word-to-word.
Hi ! If you loved this beat you'll love Dans ma ville on traîne (In my city we hang out) by Orelsan too, it's an amazing declaration of love to his City (Caen) and everything in it is amazing !
That was great, even though I don't speak French. The translation is very deep and we'll thought out. I love it. BTW- OTB is the abbreviation for Off Track Betting. It's a place where people go to bet on horse races where they aren't close enough to the track to go there. You watch the races on TVs. It's like a sports bar for people addicted to gambling. Lol Any way. Love the content. Keep it up. Much love 💞
Yup...you got gist of it...he's rapping about his life and career PMU is the company that runs horse racing in France also used to describe local dive bars where compulsive gamblers mix with alcoholics all day, watching and gambling on races
What a shame to listen to this without understanding the lyrics, I highly encourage everyone who doesn't understand french to go check out some traductions, really good song
French rappers, I would recommend Lomepal, he has the same vibe as Orelsan lyric-wise I'd say, and they did a track together as well called "La vérité" (the truth). His most popular songs are : "Trop beau" (too beautiful), piano-rap kinda vibe. Also "Yeux disent" (eyes tell), both very poetic tracks. But the ones that in my opinion are the best and actually kinda like San from Orel, are "Evidemment" and maybe "Flash".
He actually made a movie you shall have a look. The BEST insightful song of his is “Inachevé” which is also the song they make at the end of the movie. An odd to all unfinished business of our lives. Please share to our non French speaking friends
Man I've just discovered you through this video that arrived randomly in my recommendations, and I love what you do. It's nice to see that our local artist have an international aura that is appreciated. I thought it was a one way thing and that only US rap was flooding French platforms. I actually rediscovered Orelsan through your ears. Thanks mate. I'm going to watch your other videos and let you continue your Wolrd tour. If you ever decide to come back to France again, I strongly suggest Hippocampe Fou (Mad seahorse) ua-cam.com/channels/_TF0o9fX25CW7ka6W7U11A.html. He created his own "aquatic rap" style. He's been on the scene for years, but remains a powerful atypical artist. And if you dig around, you'll find amazing flows in English too. EDIT: just a tiny note on the translation, it does not affect the overall understanding, but "dirty kid" is too literal, it's actually "a brat" on a sand castle :)

Um, this is the first reaction, but, Orelsan has a new album out, but this clip, man, listen for yourself but do your homework, even for French it is difficult. But more than worth the while!!! Hey Jase. My wife and I are OBSESSED with your channel. We feel in love with you watching Hamilton. We both have suggestions for you to listen to. Mine is Wolf Totem by The Wu and my wife’s suggestion is Miss Take by Horrorpops. I hope you enjoy and have a great day.
A PMU is a bar where old alcoholic addicts have all kinds of money games( we call them "les poivrots" in french), meet to spend the day spitting on successful people, remaking the world, the politics and talk about the football game of the senior team from the town against the guys next door as for twenty years around a bottle of red wine Even if at the base a PMU is a tabacco shop orelsan talk of it with a similar picture
Yo Jase, hope you’re doin’ well! I HIGHLY recommend a video titled “mb14 vs saro.” It’s a beatbox battle at an international annual beatbox competition, and it’s the most viewed video on the channel. Although it’s 14 minutes, it’s all worth it!🤙🏼 Keep up the good work
You should react to The greatest Showman Greenlight Videos - Specifically the one with Keala Settle's "This is me" and Hugh Jackman's "From Now On". So great to see their passion for something they love!
i don't know street-French but PMU seems to most often mean Off-Track Betting, but in one search result it seemed to mean a TV show where people are giving their opinion on the topic of the day
I don't if someone explained that already, but a PMU is a bar/pub where people (mainly from working-class or jobless) go to have a drink and bet on horse racing or other sports. The common image people have of those bars is quite negative, as a place where conversations are about news or society facts, but where people tend to express their opinion without restrain (for better or worse), and that's what he meant when he said the whole world/society is becoming like this.
"La fête est finie" is the title of the album. It means "Party's over". It's a very harsh song about the passage to manhood, and how it seems like his young years are over. It's also a redemption song where Orel decides to not do the same mistakes again. It's about growing up.
Hi! I'm French, I loved your video, I seriously advise you to listen to the sound "Zone" with another great French rapper Nekfeu and Dizzee Rascal! You will love
Hey man really enjoyed your reaction! If you liked this french rap with emotional/unconventional beat, i REALLY recommand you listen to Akhenaton - Mon texte le savon part III (remix), with Sébastien Damiani !! You're in for a good surprise! Cheers mate!
Try the song Suicide social from Orelsan too, I think you will appreciate it! Link of the clip with translation: ua-cam.com/video/1aWn7hqXqX8/v-deo.html
As an american living in france and a fan of lyricists and wordplay, Orelsan is one of the rare french rappers that I think is on a lyrical level similar to some US rappers
PMU is a chain of pubs where you can buy lottery ticket and bet on horse races. PMU are in pretty much every town, and the people going there tend to always be the same and are kinda old
Hi, i'm french and i've just watch your video. If you don't listen another tracks of Orelsan since this video, i recommand you this " Défaite de famille (watch on YT)" , this song is a bomb with trash lyrics about a family diner.
I'm from switzerland and i like Orelsan! In this song, there are a lot of references to older tracks from Orelsan.. This song is very good but it's even better if you can get the references!
I'm french so sorry for my english, but u understood the song really good without the lyrics, u seems like a passionnate men and i love this mood, if you want to hear another of this song, his repertory is diversified, just for u, if you want to listen "tout vas bien" i think this is the most pertinent of this songs
A PMU is a kind of a day bar where you can bet on horses races while drinking alcohols where everyone is saying shit about everything, it can be viewed as a symbol of an empty life
My brother, I highly suggest reacting to EZ Mil. He’s this young kid from the Philippines who’s gotten about 31 million views in a couple weeks. He’s blowing up. Raps in 3 languages. And does it WELL. A lot of rappers when rapping in multiple languages lose some skill in their weaker language. EZ Mil has NO weakness. And he is ALL EMOTION. Please react to EZ Mil. Watch Panalo, IDK, and Freeze. I’ve been obsessed! Much love!
So yes PMU : Pub with often drunk people who stand there the whole day and give opinion about the world... You know, people who you wanna say "go home you're drunk" "Night are white but ideas are black". That's because in French we say "White night" when you skip the night and stay awake. In this case it's mostly means that his dark thought keeps him awake. Ablaye & Skread. Skread is his beatmaker and Ablaye his producer. "I'm still writing about a city where I don't live". He talks a lot about Caen. His home city but he lives in Paris now. "I'll keep writing as if Michael could see it". He's a huge fan of Michael Jordan and I think he wanted to be a basket player when he was younger but dropped everything at his first defeat. Something like this. I guess this sentence was to say "Watch me, I didn't drop rap at least"
If you want something different, and you like videogame music, try The 8-Bit Big Band. Here is their JAZZ rendition of Still Alive from Portal, ua-cam.com/video/22vbhTi1ieI/v-deo.html
- PMU is like someone said a bar where you can bet on horse race and stuff. It's often a sad place with alcoholics who tries to get rich but end up losing there money in the boose and the betting. So the line means that the world is a shitty place haha
you really should listen (and read the translation) "l odeur de l'essence" wich is nowadays his best song (music and lirycs), be ready to pick up your jawbone .....
You want some feelings in your rap ? Oxmo Puccino and Lino ! Check this two out ! Old french Rapper, top of the game, you'll like them, I can recommand you Scylla too, it's a Belgian Rapper with a pretty deep voice ! Have fun :D
Orelsan mentioned Saitama bc he is his actual French dub 👌

He also made the official japanese ost of this anime

dude the lyrics of this song it's maybe the most amazing lyrics that Orelsan wrote, the meaning is so deep.
This song is the intro of his third album. That's why he talks about the number 3.
And also because San mean 3 actually and mister

13:25 That what she said ! That what she said !
Please react to "You're A Mean One Mr Grinch" from PTX. Matt's singing lead in it and it's just soo great.
the world is a pmu.. PMU is a bar with the french bet on horses.. a lot of people and a lot of stories.. and there is no time to drink :)
i don't know street-French but PMU seems to most often mean Off-Track Betting, but in one search result it seemed to mean a TV show where people are giving their opinion on the topic of the day
Great cover, thanks for sharing!
You should check out some Twenty One Pilots. I recommend Car Radio, Lane Boy and Ode to Sleep
PMU is a bar where people bet on horses' race and mostly a place for old alcoholic to regroup
OTB off track betting good to see you !
Loved your video bro ! Yo should listen to "Hippocampe fou" i'm pretty sure you'll love it :)
"La fête est finie" is the title of the album. It means "Party's over". It's a very harsh song about the passage to manhood, and how it seems like his young years are over. It's also a redemption song where Orel decides to not do the same mistakes again. It's about growing up.
Pmu is a legal bookmakers for horses races stuff in France , it 's located in bars where all drunk guys give their opinion ...
You choice the best lyrical rapper in French! I hope you can found translate for all other song!!
8:27 A PMU is a pub 😉 (P.M.U. is a french sports bet company, and their bets can be made in pubs)
Correct but when a pub is called "pmu" it's really not a compliment. It's used for lame pubs where you will find lonely alcoholics.
Hey, PMU in french is a bar where you can place legal bets on horse races ;)
Try the song Suicide social from Orelsan too, I think you will appreciate it!

As an american living in france and a fan of lyricists and wordplay, Orelsan is one of the rare french rappers that I think is on a lyrical level similar to some US rappers
"Obviously I have no idea what he’s talkingn about"
Me : /*facepalm*/
Orelsan le GOAT
Nice vibe check mate
PMU is a chain of pubs where you can buy lottery ticket and bet on horse races. PMU are in pretty much every town, and the people going there tend to always be the same and are kinda old
Hi, i'm french and i've just watch your video. If you don't listen another tracks of Orelsan since this video, i recommand you this " Défaite de famille (watch on YT)" , this song is a bomb with trash lyrics about a family diner.
If you liked that track, watch L’odeur de l’essence, a MASTERPIECE (lyrics, beat and video) by Orelsan.
Yes, we have good rappers in France, that one particulary ! Hahaha !
Listen his last album, it will blow your mind 🤯
I'm from switzerland and i like Orelsan!
In this song, there are a lot of references to older tracks from Orelsan..
This song is very good but it's even better if you can get the references!
💜
If you wanna discover a good french rap groupe, try IAM. Titles like: l'empire du côté obsure, Pas nait sous la même étoile, Petit frère...
I'm french so sorry for my english, but u understood the song really good without the lyrics, u seems like a passionnate men and i love this mood, if you want to hear another of this song, his repertory is diversified, just for u, if you want to listen "tout vas bien" i think this is the most pertinent of this songs
"Tout vas bien" sounds more happy, but it's more deeper for me, cause it's detstinated to a child who doesn't understand life like an adult
For the little story... in many songs, Orelsan make reference to MJ. Here "I write every sentence as if Michael could see it".
Much love!
Come in France, we'll drink several "Ricards" in a PMU, then you'll understand ;)
So yes
PMU : Pub with often drunk people who stand there the whole day and give opinion about the world... You know, people who you wanna say "go home you're drunk"
"Night are white but ideas are black".
He's talking about Michael Jackson. Not Jordan.
If you want something different, and you like videogame music, try The 8-Bit Big Band. Here is their JAZZ rendition of Still Alive from Portal, ua-cam.com/video/22vbhTi1ieI/v-deo.html
Its funny how much there is alot of english reaction videos to orelsan but no french version xD. I think that's because everybody knows him. xD
- PMU is like someone said a bar where you can bet on horse race and stuff. It's often a sad place with alcoholics who tries to get rich but end up losing there money in the boose and the betting. So the line means that the world is a shitty place haha
the french in force (les francais en force XD)
Ouais on est Là
Suggestion for denmark: nephew feat. LOC with “hospital” (live from Roskilde) or SUSPEKT feat Jooks with “Danmark” 😄
you really should listen (and read the translation) "l odeur de l'essence" wich is nowadays his best song (music and lirycs), be ready to pick up your jawbone .....
He's wearing his own brand.
PMU is a horse betting compagny french usually play at pubs (I'm french)
Regarding the OTB translation made for PMU
Yo, if you like this, you should also listen "OrelSan - Rêves bizarres (feat. Damso)" and "Ψ. PASSION - Damzo"...!
more reaction video on orelsan please!!!! 👍👍
Take a peep at "Basique" if you like Orelsan... One of his best in my opinion...
PMU is a bar where you can also place bets, poor people go there and loose the money they have to drink and bet.
