In general, the N64 is looked down-upon due its homogenous library, controller, graphics and objectively typically poor video output. It was revolutionary to me and so holds a special place in my mind. But kids used to 360 degree control and non-linear 3D gaming will probably ignore the N64.

A really good game, stays a really good game even when the current technology has far surpassed it. I played Star Fox 64 for about 3 days straight just about a month ago. I recently picked up Shadows of Empire, Waverace, Turok and Conker's Bad Fur Day because it had great multiplayer as well. I know I'm old and it isn't coming back, but I miss when games were designed to be played with other people on your couch. Now it's all meant to be played online with some raging 13 year old in some random location on Earth who you have never met, will never meet and will never want to meet. I don't always want to play games through nostalgia goggles. I do like the new directions the XSX and PS5 took. However, DLCs and added content got a bit out of hand with loot boxes. I have a humble collection of about 25 consoles, and 10 different handhelds and there is nothing as enjoyable as playing games on the original hardware.

Still love playing my games on the N64, rareware was one of the best things Nintendo ever had on the N64 loved playing banjo kazooie/Tooie conkers bad fur day Diddy kong racing and all the other games rareware made for that system. It truly broke my heart💔 when rareware left Nintendo would have been so cool to play those games on the go with the Nintendo switch.

Your point about emulation being "illegal" is technically incorrect, although practically correct. Emulators are not illegal, and you're making the stretch of the idea that the only method of creating emulation is pirating games. Dumping games in a legal matter is totally possible, and it's up to the gamers to source ROMs in a legal matter (and not pirate). Most people will pirate games, correct, but that does not mean emulation is illegal. If emulation was illegal, it wouldn't be as prevalent online as it is today.

Downloading is flat out legal. Distribution is the illegal thing in copyright law. There's some confusion because if people use a P2P/torrent downloading application or something, they're distributing stuff at the same time, usually without really knowing it.

    • @shanez1215
      @shanez1215 2 роки тому +2

If I remember correctly the justification for ripping games is because you're allowed to make an "archival copy" of movies or music you own and burn them to discs as long as you didn't sell them. The equivalent would be a backup copy of a game and then exploiting your console to accept it.
But there was a case where the court considered playing the media on a different device (example being ripping your CD's and DVD's to a computer/Plex server/mp3 player) to be "transformation" where the two were considered different copies. If we apply that same logic, emulating games on different devices than the original isn't necessarily completely legal. It's a grey area.
But it's not really enforceable since how exactly will anyone know if the process can be done 100% offline?

Also, check locally for retro or second-hand gaming shops. I'm lucky that I have two of them within a twenty-minute drive in the Midlands of SC. The lowest price I've seen has been about $65.00 for a "good" console (Good = some scratches, discoloration, and aesthetic issues that don't affect functionality.) and $100.00 for a "very good" to "excellent" console. And those grades (if you want to call them that) are only missing the original box but look like they've been well maintained.

I had a decent N64 collection several years ago but sold it all off as I wasnt playing it much and trying to store everything was getting to be a hassle. Well I picked up another one cheap recently, and I am going the Everdrive-esque route myself this time. A loose cartridge collection isnt very appealing to me anyway, plus the games are getting expensive, for less than the price of Conkers Bad Fur day I can buy a ED64 and have the entire library on that 1 Cartridge with sd. A no brainer, for me at least, and its still original hardware and software, no emulation, still using all original peripherals on a 36" Sony Trinitron. The N64 is still a very hard system to emulate with good results so I feel this is the best solution to play the games these days, old cartridges while more reliable than old discs, still have battery and/or corrosion issues or bent pins. Its fun to revisit the old well known games and try some I missed the 1st time around. And no downloads, updates or online BS to fiddle with either.

N64 gives me so mixed feelings! The console itself is so good looking with the cartridges! But the love stops here...
The reason is that I don't like the N64 controller! And the game library is so bad. All the games are "baby 3D" games and have aged so poorly. It's not worth playing.
There's a few exceptions. A few games can be played, but it's not really really worth it. And then we have the 3 only good games:
    Super Mario 64
    Ocarina
    Majora
I rather play SNES and NES than N64. So many great 2D games on NES and SNES. I still love NES and SNES.
I always rank N64 as Nintendo's worst console ever.
If N64 could have had great 2D games also and a controller similar to SNES/NES then I would be much more interested but... NES and SNES are already THAT great so why do I need N64 if it was more similar to SNES?
The first Nintendo console with at least descent 3D was GameCube. Way better!! Plus GC had a sooooo much better controller!
And think about it: how come Nintendo is still selling a GC controller today? It's branded "Super Smash Bros" but it got the GC cotroller connector. Now I'm talking about what retailers are allowed to sell. I know that you can buy a wireless N64 controller but that's only for NSO subs, not for anyone. Nintendo is selling that GC controller while GC is not on NSO.
So yeah, I see no reason to buy N64. It's on N64 if you wanna play the very few descent games plus the 3 only great games.
And personally I think GoldenEye 007 is so overrated. I know that it was popular and many gamers love it but I don't like that game. I'm sorry...
But hey, this is just my own opinion. There's probably other gamers that would disagree a lot. But we're all different. And that's good that we got different taste and opinions :)
And last: at least I appreciate some games on N64 (but it's too little for me to wanna buy the console).

ABSOLUTELY worth it. Great games (as you already know), you can get a flash cartridge and play ALL the games (everdrive 64 also has an nes emulator so it can play most of those too and it's region free), and the hardware is some of most solidly manufactured I've ever seen. I've dealt with many older consoles that had issues and the N64 seems to be one of the best built. No moving parts -No hardrive or laser to go bad. The systems are now 25 years old, and the only problem I ever had was one that had a non working controller port (probably just dirty). The one have now I fully expect to work in 20 years, and I wouldn't be surprised if it still works 50 years from now. These systems will be going long after most switches die. Also a plus to play it on a Sony Trinitron. The colors look great for stuff like ssb and mk64. Think I'm a little OCD about it, but I prefer the experience of using original hardware with a crt tv. That's the most accurate way to play for me. I have sm 3d all stars on the switch but I never play sm64 on it. I'd much rather play it on my n64. Not too into the cart collecting tho..that can be pricey.

I still love getting my best friends together to play WCW vs NWO Revenge or WWF No Mercy and i have lost count of how many times i have played through Zelda OOT, Star Wars Rogue Squadron, Operation Winback, Nightmare creatures, Star Wars Episode 1 Racer, Quest 64, Body Harvest........... Best System ever

I feel very tempted to purchase an N64 but I’m a broke kid so I really can’t - even though there’s a shop about two blocks by my house that sells them.. ahhh, I’ll own one someday though…

N64 + Everdrive is a good place to start. Then RGB mod it and use a SCART cable to a CRT then you are set. If you must use an HDMI digital tv with the analog video from the n64, then use the Retrotink5x.

Thankfully I got a Nintendo 64 several years ago. It was a pre-owned system previously used by another of the service users at my disability group. I got it for $15 with a good amount of games. I thought until recently that the system had problems, but I figured out it was the connection to the power supply that was causing it to turn off frequently. I removed and reattached the power brick, and it works brilliantly now!

I'm currently eyeing a used N64 at a local retro games shop here in SC. It's about $100.00. I've already purchased a copy of Nightmare Creatures to play and copies of Golden Eye and others will follow in time. It will be a part of my Retro Set-Up that includes an Atari 2600 Vader Edition, my original Nintendo Entertainment System, Sega Dreamcast, and Nintendo Wii. I never owned an N64 when they came out, but I played them a bit, along with the GameCube, at friend's houses. I'm looking forward to adding it to the collection.

After recently getting a free CRT TV I finally dug my old (second, not childhood original) N64 out of storage along with some games I thankfully kept like Mario 64, Ocarina of Time, No Mercy, and Mario Tennis. Kicking myself for selling a few games (probably for pennies) back in the day but enjoying revisiting these classics. Re-buying a couple old games too before they increase in value even more.
By the way, I'd highly recommend buying a Forever Pak if any of your old memory cards still work. They're a little pricey but should more or less work indefinitely since you won't lose data when the batteries die.

I looked up my view on nintendo 64 on UA-cam, but i didn't really see anything related to it.
So im just gonna say it here.
I no longer like or find joy in n64 games, nes and snes, and other known nintendo consoles are just fine, but i just can't enjoy 64 games anymore, ive been trying the available 64 games on the switch for a while multiple times, but the lack of art style and details and good visuals and models just ruins any desire i have to put anytime into playing it.
Nintendo 3ds and ds remakes of n64 games are still hella fun tho, especially majoras mask 3d (i even still have the cartridge).

I'm sorry but this is a terribly bias video.. You gave no argument (besides nostalgia and collection) as to why you should buy an N64 in 2021.. And FYI emulation is definitely a much better experience, especially if you dont want to keep a big tube TV laying around just to play old games. Emulators often offer different resolutions, better framerate and more options which make the gameplay much better. Ocarina of time for example is much better on an emulator, and it also allows you to play with a wireless xbox controller so you dont have to deal with the awful n64 controller. Also, emulators are free and can be played on things like a raspberry pie which you can plug anywhere, compared to buying n64 cartridges which have become quite expensive

Saying N64 emulation is bad are coming from people that haven't played on RetroArch with the parallei core and the vulkan API. Just search for accurate N64 emulation and see for yourself. It even shows what settings to use in under 30 seconds.
It's near identical to the OG hardware, with lag, visuals and everything... and I play N64 all the time, so I know.
And yes, downloading roms is illegal, but emulation in it self, is not.
