- This video shows the front suspension fork rebuild process on this 1996 Yamaha Virago xv750. The forks are the same on most virago models of the mid 80's to late 90's. This bike has only about 13,000 miles on it, but sat for a long time. I believe it has never had its forks serviced before. Corrosion accumulates from sitting long term with low oil, and rubber seals degrade from age.
Excessively soft or bouncy front suspension is likely caused by a lack of fork oil. Draining the oil out the bottom bolts and topping it off through the top can be done without disassembling or removing the forks, but this will only be a temporary fix if the seals are leaking.
I used a rebuild kit which included main fork seals and dust seals, upper/lower bushings, and snap rings.
Used Lucas 10wt medium fork oil (396ml per fork).
good tip for anyone doing this at home, before removing the fork entirely, break the fork cap loose while it's attached to the triple tree to avoid damaging the fork in a vice and making it easier to unscrew. best of luck to yall!
Hey clay! im building my first bike, also a yamaha viirago 750 1983. i have mechanical background while i dive into this project. your videos are taking me in the right direction. thank you
Anyone try the inverted forks from Jetco? Heavier wall since the fork is one of them inverter style. $200 including of course the 40mm crowns and spec steerer. While I was in there I did my bearings. I was front fenderless for a spell but found a similar also metal n chrome. The front end sits 2" higher. Haven't blown the seals in them yet, lol. .
thanks very muchly from the UK 👍
