The 750 Holmes was a work horse still is. Young people need to experience the old way s.as a learning experience. I enjoyed the video. Merry Christmas. To you and your family and your crew. God Bless You and your Family and your Crew.
We can’t get enough 750 ,I loved it when I ran 1973 or 75 coe Kenworth 750 - 35000 Zack lift, 1000 tows with that good ol number 5 is what we called it , thanks BigAl California
This brings back memories from Christmas’s when I was a little kid. My dad had a 750 on a 1978 autocar with a big cam 400 9 speed and 3 aux box. We would put lights on it every year for the Christmas parade.
Mr. Hal==Congrats on some ol' school basic wrecker knowledge....Very kool-teaches That young man things he never thought of....I ran both a 600 and 750 for years--the recovery jobs are just harder back then. But I have un-decked a lot of new trucks with the side booms-got a turned over forklift out of a trailer/another forklift burnt out of a railcar--yes it can be done. Slow and like you said hard manual labor Good to have a young helped.....
Mr Hal, the crank on the main winch is so you can roll cable up faster when you have alot of length out. 850 has power up and down and our oshkosh has hydraulic extension on the booms. The old iron is very versatile with the knowledge to run it!
Thank for show us how much work it was to use the old iron . Yes I would work that old girl any day of the week. If the doctor didn't take my CDL. For some reason if you have 4 heart attacks and COPD they don't like you driving a truck . I dove for about 40 years on road and off road. Have a MERRY CHRISTMAS.
Oh yes. Ran those 750s dor years. They were the go to wrwcker in the day. There were no challengers or v100s. You had a holmes and loved them. Brings back lits of memories seeing them still around and in service
The Grandpa Holmes 750 is the Pride of the fleet It's only a 25 ton but acts like a 50 ton .. Mr Hal and your outstanding crew Have yourself a Very Merry Christmas and a Grand New Year looking forward to 2024 with Brand new videos
I consider a video of the Holmes 750 as a Christmas present from Sumter Wrecker. Can't get enough of it. Love the old stuff. Merry Christmas to you Mr. Hal, Mr. Wilbert, your entire crew and all your families....and the subscribers as well.
thanks for the memories, worked a 750 in the Kootnay Pass Canada. yes a tator is faster/easier but these old beasts are/were just as capable in the right hands.
MERRY CHRISTMAS Mr Hal. and the Sumter crew. love those old Holmes wreckers use to run a 500 use to split the booms and come right off the mast on a heavy winch off the back 3 snatch blocks get it up on the scocth blocks it was on a long wheelbase ford f600 once the front end came off the ground the weight would start working for you. Great old truck. Would raise the booms up when using the truck sling to transfer weight to the front axle for better steering. 😊
Hi Mr Hal, new hi tech is great until it goes wrong. Can’t beat old mechanical iron. It’s more work but more reliable. Merry Christmas to you and all the team at Sumpter Wrecker, 😎🇬🇧
Thank you so much for taking the time to share this. That was some real work back in the day. I owned a Holmes 480 split boom back in the 80’s. Hats off to you and all the Trail Blazers. Have a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year!! Stay safe out there. 🙏🏽
You better eat your Wheaties if you have to do all that by yourself! Great demonstration Mr. Hal and Evan. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all of the Sumpter Wrecker families and crews!
Still is a awesome piece of machinery that can show up some of the new stuff looking forward to the new year and whats to come Mr Hal and everyone else in you great team.
I was just thinking, the other day, when you posted the video with the gofer, "i sure would like to see another video of the split boom in action." Thank you Mr. Hal, and Merry Christmas to you and yours, from me and mine.
Very impressive demonstration Mr. Hal. Back then it looks like the Operator did the majority of the work. Now I believe hydraulics relieved the Operator of most of the work. Still a lot of respect for all tow operators then and now. I’ve been on the hook a few times.
Wrecker crews were tough guys in those days ,Thank you to who ever developed hydraulics .Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy New Year to you and the crew .
I never realized what all that truck could do. Those designers and builders seem to have known much more than the folks now. Working in construction, I can see a truck like that being used for more than towing/wrecker services. Thank you for sharing with us. Wishing you, your family, your staff and your fire department family a very, Merry Christmas and a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year.
Thanks for the video Mr Hal. I never got the chance to operate a mechanical wrecker like the 750 all the ones I operated were hydraulic. However all the heavy duty wreckers I ever operated did not have an under reach so I had to use the angle iron and 8x8 pieces of wood and pulled a lot of front bumpers off in order to hook to the front. Great video. Note. Merry Christmas and wishing you and yours a great new year.
That was an amazing review of that wrecker, Mr. Hal. So many uses for that. I had never seen that done so thank you and Evan. Great video. Thanks for sharing and I would like to wish you and all employees of Sumter Towing a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!
MERRY CHRISTMAS TO Y'ALL MR. HAL. Back in the day had a friend bought a old 50 series Chev with a twin boom Holmes on it. They used to do some unheard things with it. He swore it was great for pulling engines. Can't imagine why they've all gone hydraulic n don't get their much needed exercise, can you? 😂🤔. Good seeing this all stretched out. Thanks for sharing. Blessings. 🏁👍🇺🇸
Nothing wrong at all with an old homes. we have the 480 500. 600 an original 750 and our dad purchased in 73 and a 850 still. Don’t use them every day but they all still work great.
That was a good video. I saw it in action on one of your videos .I know its a lot of manual labor. I like to see that old at work . Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Also be safe
The company that I ran wrecker part time for bought a 600 new in 1970. It pulled many vehicles out of deep ditches. I wonder if that extra shaft is to turn the winches by hand. One of the first wreckers I ran had a hand cranked winch with deep gear reduction. It wasn't difficult to crank but it took forever.
Thats one thing about the old mechanicals, they dont hurry.. ive still got a old mechanical Holmes on a 1ton Ford thats fully capable and a 650 on a 2 ton that im trying to find another truck to put it on..
I used to run one of those back in the day. Thankfully I run 50 ton miller century rotator. My old body can't do all that manual labor like I used to. 😊
Merry Christmas from across the big pond to all of you guys. If I ever were to restore an historic truck to its first glory, your Holmes wrecker would be high up on my Christmas shopping list. Sweet dreams.
Still love me a Holmes swing boom, cut my teeth on those back in the early 80s 480, 500, 600, 750 and the 850 railroad retriever. Hell of a machine! still to this day with someone who knows how to work them. Not as easy as the hydros but they will still get the job done. They will pull a truck in half!!! as you said those things don't stop pulling or will flip themselves over backwards, the only safety is the operator. I didn't get to play with my first hydro till almost 1990, I still love the mechanical stuff for heavy pull outs.
That was a great video. I've always wondered what all those things are on there for. Yeah it was hard in the day. It's good for these young guys to see what it was like and how hard it was. Not like all the stuff they got today where you just push and pull buttons and everything works. Thank you very much for that. I really enjoy your videos like I said many times before and I just want to wish you and your family all the best and a happy new year and definitely looking forward to more videos. Thank you. 👍👍🙂🇨🇦

Thank you so much for this video Mr. Hal!!! You know the Gofer is my favorite truck! I have an old F600 with a holmes bed on it that looks exactly like the 750 but does not extend and is a bit smaller scale (may be a 600 but i’m not sure). I learn from your videos. I really appreciate you taking the time to make these! Merry Christmas & Happy New Years to you, your family, and the crew and their families!!
the boom extension is the one thing i wish my 500 had i would love to pull engines with the wrecker. and can remove if i swing the boom out to the side to do it is hard to control
thanks so much for sharing i really love my Dodge 500 with the Holmes 500 on the back truck only has 50,000 miles original seat cover still on it. only thing i really need that haven't found is the Hydro-Vac power brake booster works ok i don't tow for hire and will stop ok with light loads but hopefully will find one for it soon. next thing i am going to do is recable it i installed 3/8 cables and i will brake one of those with ease if you aren't careful was pulling some logs and engine never changed tones pulled into repaired and broke it again and it was a new cable i have some 1/2'' for it i think that will solve the problem. i need to get the dementions of the scotch blocks you hook to the back of yours and build me some have been using a big truck wheel but hard to handle thanks
I love ur vids with 750 holmes.. im looking for vids of old split booms. Im up just outside Charlotte.i just scored a 72 Needle Nose Pete with a weldbuilt bed on it. Not sure what size..but its def bigger Nd heavier then a 750 bed im pretty sure.
I would love to get my hands on one of these Holmes units. Back before Hulk, this was the king of recovery!
