It depends on how the newspaper is printed I think, still not sure how good it is to be eating paper but most newspapers are printed with vegetable ink so it should be fairly safe to eat I’m assuming. I line my birds cage with newspapers because if they end up chewing on it the ink won’t hurt them
Well, the chicken is already well-packaged with the lotus leaves, so the newspaper shouldn’t have any affect on the chicken. But I’m not an expert by any means.
Hi Emma, There is a similar (somewhat) style of cooking in my homeland - Punjab where a whole chicken is cooked wrapped in muslin cloth and covered in whole wheat flour and cooked in a clay oven. :)
@@uniquenewyork3325 I think Doug Kurtz meant there is no need for the additional step of wrapping in newspaper. The clay can go straight onto the lotus leaves.
not only that but i wouldn't want to bake anything in newprint. ink dyes are pretty nasty. admittedly i doubt any significant amount is released, particularly given how none of it fumes with the clay covering. still... just why. if you need a steam barrier for the clay just use a paper towel or butcher paper layer.
I thought so too! That’s how you usually make tamales in Mexico (we use banana leaves instead of the lotus ones tho) and nothing goes through them if you know how to properly wrap things up.
I think the newspaper is just a tradition kinda like how fish n chips are traditionally served in newspaper. It may seem nasty but to people who grew up eating it like this the taste is nostalgic
I just watched this whole video without pausing and I'm just realizing it now at the end! This was an incredible video, I rarely can watch a whole video like this without stopping midway.

Gregory Kons it’s really easy I’d use cane sugar if I’d were you and brown sugar sucrose mixture... then just leave it too soak my mother would add pineapple... when I do my turkeys I use apples 🍏 then cook

Beggar: Oh no! Someone's coming! I'll just (brine, marinade, stuff, wrap in lotus leaves, tie, wrap in newspaper, and) throw this chicken I stole in the mud! Phew... that was a close one!
So a poetical story, that everyone in the country the dish is from would have understood was a story, was somehow something to take entirely literally so you can take the piss out of it? You must be new around here...
Wow at both lotus leaves and the aromatic onion blend. And thanks for showing the clay refining process. I probably don't have the energy but would love to try that once.
It's so cool to see adults happy once in a while. Especially if you're a child, though we may not show it, or seem that we care while young, thinking back it really puts a smile on your face.
Love the whole process! My only concern is newsprint ink possibly seeping into the chicken during baking. What about this? I would probably substitute parchment.
I made this. My family liked it. It's a keeper. I plan on trying it using a pork roast. I had to order the lotus leaves on line and I got the clay from Hobby Lobby a 25 pound box. Need less to say I had a lot of clay left over.
This is REALLY weird and amazing to me. Growing up Chinese, l believed classic Chinese cooking did not include baking, despite being known for their ceramics lol. Hiding a stolen chicken in dirt? Then baking it? Genius. (No really, from what I've seen, my family does not bake Chinese anything. It's either stir fry, pan fry, fry, boil, or steam.) I've never heard of this dish in my entire life. I assume it's something regional. Also do not use run of the mill ham, you need to choose a fatty cut, like pork belly for best flavour that won't dry out, even fatty uncooked bacon will do the trick,
typical home cook and restaurants won't do this dish due to the amount of labor and time. in my city there are a few that does this but they all require you to pre-book a day ahead.
I bought one of these on my way to a beach here in China in 2006. a few weeks later I rented a bus to bring 50 friends to go out to try this chicken. its been a regular trip ever since. I'm driving out there this Sunday with my pretty little wife and daughters for this clay cooked chicken. It's so awesome you try all these old school recipes. Thanks for sharing.

There is a similar (somewhat) style of cooking in my homeland - Punjab where a whole chicken is cooked wrapped in muslin cloth and covered in whole wheat flour and cooked in a clay oven. :)
Incredible! I wouldn’t have used newspaper though. I think I would prefer the clay touching the leaves over the newspaper ink dripping on the chicken.
You could try parchment :0
@@uniquenewyork3325 I think Doug Kurtz meant there is no need for the additional step of wrapping in newspaper. The clay can go straight onto the lotus leaves.
@@saggiteightyfour8367 that's true
Thinking same thing
Koji 888 do you know what diffusion is
Love it when you're so excited, you were a kid in a candy store excited a complete joy to watch
12:25 I thought the point of wrapping it with lotus leaves was so that you didn't have to use newspaper or plastic wrap
not only that but i wouldn't want to bake anything in newprint. ink dyes are pretty nasty. admittedly i doubt any significant amount is released, particularly given how none of it fumes with the clay covering. still... just why. if you need a steam barrier for the clay just use a paper towel or butcher paper layer.
I thought so too! That’s how you usually make tamales in Mexico (we use banana leaves instead of the lotus ones tho) and nothing goes through them if you know how to properly wrap things up.
yea I’d exclude the newspaper from the recipe
I think the newspaper is just a tradition kinda like how fish n chips are traditionally served in newspaper. It may seem nasty but to people who grew up eating it like this the taste is nostalgic
lynx The taste of newspaper?
(I know that’s not what you meant but the phrasing 😂)
Lol. My great grandmother called the end of the chicken," the pope's nose". I haven't though of that in 30 years
Jason Peterka that’s the official name for it! Emmy and your great grandma are right!
Still recognised in England. We call it the 'Parson's Nose'
It's called the last part over the fence where I'm from!
@@terencenaylor5441 same.
Parsons nose at my place in Australia but my nan was a Pom.
So so so satisfying
Omg an old comment of yours

I just watched this whole video without pausing and I'm just realizing it now at the end! This was an incredible video, I rarely can watch a whole video like this without stopping midway.
Does the flavor change depending on what section of the newspaper you wrap it with?
Mine tasted funny..
Sessmaru Kusanagi Gaming; Lmao
Try not to reuse the part where you wrap dog poop in.
DON'T use the comics. Your chicken will taste funny. 😜
Using the editorials makes it strangely salty.
The minute I saw the lotus leaves I immediately thought THAT'S A FRIGGIN TOTORO HAT!!!
When you want a piñata, but you’re trying to cut back on sugar.
Yes, of course. Just use a whole-ass chicken
@@youdontknowmeokay4227 less sugar
The bloop noise when she drops in the oyster sauce is amazing 👏
Can we appreciate for a moment, how childishly happy and cute Emmy is? She is so adorable! Hugs from Romania
I love your little “hehe” you did when you wrapped the chicken 💙
Always excited when i get the notification for a new Emmy video
🙌🏼
Alex Ivrsn millennial
Alex Ivrsn right?!
Agreed
I love the enthusiasm and excitement over some of the things you create and items you use, i.e. the excitement you expressed after wrapping the bird in the lotus leaves. You were like a little kid, such an incredible moment. And you know, it's those tiny moments that make life worth living.
Emmy, you should try to sugar cure your own ham it is something I have always wanted to do but have been to afraid to do
please try this Emmy! 🙌🙌🙌
Great idea!!
Gregory Kons it’s really easy I’d use cane sugar if I’d were you and brown sugar sucrose mixture... then just leave it too soak my mother would add pineapple...
when I do my turkeys I use apples 🍏 then cook
It's really good I do mines every year...fed up of buying
Timberly Jones I use brown sugar coke and pineapple
And you actually took the time to make the clay you truly are so humble and a beautiful being externally and internally ❤️.
You can go without the newspaper. The clay will harden and not stick to the chicken during the cooking process.
Trey Milton I was grossed out with the use of newspapers
Toxic fumes.. Yeah
You could probably use butchers paper instead of newspaper, no risk of nay nasties from the inks then.
paper towels ? clean. no ink. clay sticks to paper towels and looks more presentable.
But, for 'beggar's chicken' - left over newspapers is an authentic touch.
SeaJay Oceans ah no the Daly will stick
I watch every video at 1.25 speedup and let me tell you my friend, the joy and happyness is unbelievably increased even tho you'd think it is be impossible.
I really love your videos Emmy, regardless of the topic. The pureness, the everything you put in them. They clean my soul minute by minute.
I really like the recipe, but using newspaper in food can be dangerous, as some kinds of ink have toxic metals
you could probably use parchment instead
Mariana Duarte Starling the leaves stop the ink from getting to the chicken too
@@margosaur Parchment probably wouldn't work because they prevent the moisture from escaping. Traditionally Chinese people use Xuan paper (宣纸) to wrap it. And since this paper is basically made from rice, it's very safe to be used for cooking.
Yudi Ng interesting
Good to know
Her energy is beautiful. I love how excited she is.
With the amount of research and effort you put into these videos, they deserve way more views :) I'm glad you do this, balancing the bad on UA-cam with humbling unique videos
The way she giggled happily after wrapping the chicken with the lotus leaves is just so adorable. ❤ i can see how much she's enjoying herself.
I love her reaction so much when she got amazed by everything. ❤️😍
Emmy: I'm not going to decorate it...
Clay chicken: decorated with finger rows!🤣
Beggar: Oh no! Someone's coming! I'll just (brine, marinade, stuff, wrap in lotus leaves, tie, wrap in newspaper, and) throw this chicken I stole in the mud! Phew... that was a close one!
Ruby Doomsday right lol I rolled my eyes hard. R/thathappened

Wow at both lotus leaves and the aromatic onion blend. And thanks for showing the clay refining process. I probably don't have the energy but would love to try that once.

Emmy being genuinely excited with her recipes warms my heart every time 😭💙
Would parchment paper be better than newspaper? I wonder if any chemicals could leach out ?
I'd use butchers paper myself. Similar in texture to newspaper but none of the nasty inks.
It's so cool to see adults happy once in a while. Especially if you're a child, though we may not show it, or seem that we care while young, thinking back it really puts a smile on your face.
9:17 she's so precious when she got excited. Protect her at all cost!! 😂😂
Love the whole process! My only concern is newsprint ink possibly seeping into the chicken during baking. What about this? I would probably substitute parchment.
I believe lead was removed from newsprint long ago.
I was thinking about the same...
Your reaction to cooking this is so cute, I love seeing people excited about their work
Just when I think I can’t possibly love this woman more…..here I am in awe! The commitment, the knowledge, the research, the joy. All of it. ❤

17 minutes of Emmy! Wonderful!!
LIKE THE VIDEO BC SHE REALLY WENT THROUGH TO EFFORT OF MAKING CLAY OMG
Makin' clay. "Sounds dirty." Well, it isn't. (...all things being relative.)
I made this. My family liked it. It's a keeper. I plan on trying it using a pork roast. I had to order the lotus leaves on line and I got the clay from Hobby Lobby a 25 pound box. Need less to say I had a lot of clay left over.
I could listen to Emmy read the phone book!! Loved the clay making!
You are awesome Emmy! You’ve broadened my horizons so much since I found your channel! Thank you for sharing all of these different foods with us!
My pleasure - thanks for watching. 🤗
The chicken looks like a giant walnut when it's in the clay
Emmy is soooo cute and full of good vibes. It’s nice to see someone so excited about what they are doing.
Also do not use run of the mill ham, you need to choose a fatty cut, like pork belly for best flavour that won't dry out, even fatty uncooked bacon will do the trick,
she adapted it from a recipe; she just followed what kind of ham they used.
typical home cook and restaurants won't do this dish due to the amount of labor and time. in my city there are a few that does this but they all require you to pre-book a day ahead.
Yeah it’s definitely not a home cooked dish. I’ve only seen it in period dramas or Wuxia novels lol
imagine you forget to wrap the chicken first and find it's skin went smooth and glowing with all those clay
i dont get it
@@torb1trick415 clay face masks help to exfoliate skin and deep clean pores, which results in super smooth, glowy skin.
