Don't take off for more than 2 weeks straight. You'll lose form and it takes a lot longer to get it back.
For shin splints: Get some rollerblades. Rollerblade around for 45 mins to an hour every day. Do LOTS and LOTS of turning at high speed, meaning; do lots of crossovers with your feet. In the winter, ice skate and do the same thing. If you do this, you will never have shin splints again. And fyi, the way to recover from shin splints fastest is to strengthen them by playing (semi-lightly) through them as much as you can. This will strengthen them immensely and the pain will go away faster. Take it from me, someone who played ice hockey at the highest levels for 16 years, someone who currently plays TT at the highest level, someone who coaches TT at the highest levels of amateur and professional. I've had wicked shin splints before. Skating causes them wayyyyy more easily than anything else. And I would only get them if I didn't skate or blade much for the summer (due to playing other sports at high levels). I'd get them the first time I got back on the ice. Luckily, I would go to public skates before practices started. And I would just fight through the pain and do consistent power laps for about 2 hours straight, regardless of the pain. Half-way through the 2nd time at public skate, the shin splints would be gone, no more pain at all. This is due to strengthening of the shins, which is the only way to overcome them quickly and to never get them again.
Just make sure you get blades/skates that are a full U.S./U.K. (Does not matter which of the two scales you use. Just pick one and only go by it) size less than your shoe size. Also, make sure that you tie those suckers as tight to your ankles as possible. Then, do just as I said. And keep going through the pain. As much as it feels like you're going to injure yourself, you won't (barring some mishap). Just keep going through the pain. And believe me, I know how much it hurts. It feels like the muscles are ripping right off your shins. But, just keep going. And after 2 or 3 days STRAIGHT of that, you should be totally fine again because your muscles will become very strong and there will be no pain.

Stop swinging so slowly, mate. You need to swing HARD all the time. And you need to stop hitting down the centre of the table. You gotta be aiming for the lines with full power all the time. These are 2 things that separate the men from the boys
