I don't think talking is encouraged in public transportation in any country. That should be considered to be unetiquette. Also, just because people don't talk to strangers, that doesn't necessarily mean indivisualism.
Talking on public transportation is considered anti-social? Sorry but I don't think that true for everyone. Talking loudly and generally making a lot of noise would be annoying, but not simply talking in a normal tone. These are cultural differences and they can vary from place to place.
@@WalkingSideways I didn't say it is anti-social, but I agree that necessary talks with low voice should not be considered to be unetiquette. The problem is that people tend to increase volume while talking without noticing it themselves.

@@olivialiu7866 I agree with you, but Korea and Japan have political freedom and China don't have it. It's clear that there is a difference between a system and it is not that it is superior.
@@olivialiu7866 Political freedom and the obsession with rules are two different things. Personally, I think it's just a cultural difference. Koreans and Japanese tend to feel easily offended by others' nuisances, so Koreans and Japanese are careful about their actions, hoping to cause less harm to others. However, the Chinese people seem to have different sets of perceptions and reactions. They don't care much about others' nuisances, and they also do little care about their actions too. I think it's only a matter of social choice, and it's called a cultural difference. Koreans may have been closer to the Chinese than to the Japanese in the past in the respect. I think that as people gradually became wealthier, the center of gravity shifted from the group to the individual, and that's how it changed. If that's the pattern, then people living in wealthy cities and neighborhoods in China would probably be more similar to Koreans/Japanese than Chinese.
@@piggy2023-sk3lq I think the stereotypical loud and selfish Chinese that many foreigners think of is actually the “Cultural Revolution generation”, which is now in their 70s and 80s and doesn't have the energy to be loud anymore. Thanks for sharing your honest impressions of Seoul! You guys are always so respectful of the places you visit, and there is nothing wrong with not vibing with a city. Great video, as always! 😊

I am interested in Asia and have traveled to many countries. My trip to China was the worst. I have had many bad experiences. However, it is not easy to generalize China. There are often good Chinese people in China. Korea also has hidden good sights and tourist attractions. I did not experience only good things in Korea, but I met many good Koreans and learned about unexpected good tourist attractions in addition to the famous tourist attractions.
As a Chinese person, I notice that you two kind-hearted people have a great appreciation and openness toward Eastern culture, especially in your videos about China. I want to remind you that the online atmosphere across the East, including China, is not very positive right now. If you express negative opinions, local people might leave many harsh comments. But as you said, people are people. So, if you are attacked online by people from Eastern countries, please don't take it to heart. Additionally, due to Japan's actions during World War II towards almost all Asian countries, which were comparable to Germany's crimes, many Asian nations have lived under the influence of right-wing rhetoric from the Japanese government for a long time. This has led to lingering anti-Japanese sentiments among the public over the past century. If you encounter this, especially in China, Korea, North Korea, and Southeast Asia, I hope you can understand. Interestingly, Taiwan and Japan have a very close relationship, so there's no need to worry.
You make an excellent point. But how many locals in developed major cities like London, New York, Tokyo, and Frankfurt would stop and talk to tourists for 30min even for 5min. pace of life often prioritizes efficiency and individual obligations, leaving little room for unplanned, meaningful interactions with strangers in developed countries and especially in major cities. It’s bittersweet, though, because the same development that brings convenience and opportunities in cities also brings disconnection, which, as you said, is a sad trade-off. You will more likely find what ur seeking in smaller cities especially in countryside. BTW I'm from Canada and seoul does feel like Toronto in many ways which valides ur point
You have to learn the past history of late 18th and early 19th. So many historical and cultural places were destroyed by the Imperial Japanese and also hundreds of thousands of historical/cultural items were looted back to Japan and are now stored underneath their national museums.
You two are my favorite travel bloggers. You have no prejudices, no strong commercial purpose, and simply explore various landscapes and cultures. In fact, the countries and people with high happiness index in the world are still several countries in Northern Europe, relying on rich geographical location and natural resources plus reasonable government governance. The second most prosperous place should be some cities in the Middle East, which also rely on a lot of oil. The European and American countries that led the world in the past century have led to domestic inflation and insecurity due to the drawbacks of capitalist governance and the non-sustainability of colonization through war, as well as various immigration issues and party struggles. Therefore, East Asia is currently the most prosperous region. Japan and South Korea are both developed countries with perfect education and medical systems. However, if you look deeper, you will find that due to the limitations of national territory and resources, as well as historical reasons, their national happiness index is very low, and even depression and suicide rates are among the highest in the world. There are many reasons for this. First, East Asians have the highest IQ in the world and are the most hardworking people. This is the reason for the economic miracles of Japan and South Korea. Second, there are historical reasons and the influence of the United States. After World War II, Japan was a defeated country with a large number of US military bases in the country. Its economy and politics were controlled by the United States. It was not completely a sovereign country. Even when Japan's economy was at its peak, the United States was able to use a series of policies to stagnate Japan's economy for 30 years. South Korea was established with the support of the US military. Due to the existence of North Korea, the US military's influence on South Korea is even greater than that of Japan. Therefore, South Korea's influence in the international arena is very small. Only in the past ten years, the girl group culture and K-pop style entertainment culture have some influence in other countries, but this is not mainstream culture, but a propaganda culture with a capitalist color. South Korea is even more monopolized by chaebols, which control South Korea's economy and politics, and Wall Street in the United States is the major shareholder of the chaebol group, so South Korean citizens do not have many choices. There are other problems that exist in East Asia, such as aging population, employment environment, price level, young people's marriage, etc. These phenomena are particularly obvious in Japan, South Korea and some parts of China. Japan and South Korea are almost unable to break through due to their territory, resources and restrictions of the United States. China, due to its late start in modernization, can learn a lot from them and hopefully improve these problems. Finally, to sum up, East Asia is relatively prosperous and stable, and the quality of the people is relatively high. I hope you two have a good time.
Looking back at history, guess why China was late to modernize? China's development does not depend on any country, Japan and South Korea need to listen to the United States, China does not need to listen to any country. When China appeared in the world, the United States was not even a shadow. So China has never taken the US seriously. During the Tang Dynasty, Japan and Korea were vassals of China. At the end of the Qing Dynasty, the eight-power allied forces invaded China and then the Japaneseinvaded China。China's status plummeted before the United States commandeered the position of the big brother in Asia. Now that big Brother is back, if the United States dares to move anywhere in Asia, it must first ask China.

I found your observations about the culture of the country you visited and your personal reflections quite interesting. However, I am concerned that your understanding of Korean culture may be based on only a very superficial view. It seems there is insufficient consideration of Korea's modern history, particularly the intense development and struggles Koreans faced after the Joseon Dynasty. Furthermore, after watching both your previous and current videos, I noticed that even unique aspects of Korea's dining culture-such as the use of metal chopsticks and spoons, a distinctive feature in Northeast Asia-were overlooked. Instead, eating with fingers and not using a spoon in situations where they are customary may convey an incomplete understanding of the culture. In many dining settings in central Seoul, even a little communication would likely have led to guidance on how meals are traditionally enjoyed. If metal chopsticks were challenging to use, most places would readily provide forks upon request. Additionally, the lack of conversation on the subway, which you highlighted, reflects a sense of public etiquette and respect for others in shared spaces rather than being a defining characteristic of Korean culture. Evaluating such behaviors as indicative of the culture as a whole might not be entirely accurate. I believe it is challenging and requires caution to judge a country’s culture based on limited and surface-level observations. That being said, I warmly welcome you to Korea and hope that your trip can be more relaxed and enjoyable without taking everything too seriously or making hasty judgments. Lastly, please remember that these are merely my personal thoughts, and I hope you don't feel uncomfortable about them. ❤

Why do Chinese always appear in Korean videos and make comments like this? And whenever Korean dramas or Korean content become popular, do they get jealous and distort Korean culture as Chinese culture? I also saw that China says that pizza and football are of Chinese origin..I found an article in Chinese media a long time ago that said kimchi is a Korean food. However, after kimchi appeared in many Korean dramas and became famous, I saw China distorting it by saying that kimchi is a food of Chinese origin. The cultures of all countries in the world are equally good. However, Koreans had excessive competition after the war in order to modernize quickly and become rich quickly. Korea's advantage is the product of such "competition," and its disadvantage is also due to "competition." The meaning of "competition" can be interpreted as stress, as well as effort. Appreciate anyone's honest feeling about anything. But I can make one suggestion perhaps? All you need to do is spend about a hour to do some research and you'll have a list of places to visit and understand the history, which will make your travel immensely better and enjoyable. All I've seen in your videos is that you both eating somewhere. You see? You are at the one of the 5 major historic palaces in Korea today but you both haven't got a clue where you are at and what you are looking at? So, if you don't know what you are doing, you won't be able to appreciate what you are seeing and doing. Any country that you may go to, please do some research before you go. It'll help your travel immensely enjoyable. You don't need to read a book, you have internet. I wonder what your purpose of the travel was ... And FYI, people are purposely being quiet in public places, including public transportation, out of respect for others around. It's a part of the Korean culture. You thought that spending 5 days in Seoul will be enough for you to form a distinctive opinion about South Korea? The country has more than 5,000 years of history, and evidences of that history are everywhere. It's obvious that you both had any idea where to look. Voice one's opinion is at free, but it's more meaningful when it's done with understanding of meanings behind everything
There are almost no historical sites in South Korea, and all you can see now are modern imitations. Evidence of thousands of years of Chinese rule is everywhere in South Korea, but much of it has been deliberately destroyed by modern Koreans, including the Chinese script and etiquette, and even the Chinese name for the Korean capital has been changed to "Seoul", because they are now eager to attach themselves to the USA and abandon their cultural roots.
I know one weird thing about Korean culture. The Koreans I lived around all my life do not apologize. If they wrong you they want to give you stuff and make amends. I don't know if that goes for all Koreans but definitely the ones that lived around me. Just different😮
There are American troops in South Korea. South Korea has to pay a large amount of military expenditure to the United States every year, and South Korea is not allowed to have sovereignty, because South Korea can become a developed country by the United States, once South Korea does not listen to the United States, the United States will harvest South Korea.
I can see why you guys said Seoul is “western” like as it is the most developed city in S Korea but besides the big buildings I don’t think it’s like Europe. I would recommend taking a few one day tours offered by locals to show you around. There are many cultural museums, food tours, cultural villages, temples and other cultural cities etc. Hope you find what you’re looking for😊
Where is the lost smile?public side need noise because we are people,we need normal talk and hear the baby cry.come to china again,to a great story, history and social。hope you guys sunshine again。
Complaining about the culture in Seoul is like going to London and complaining about the state of affairs in Edinburgh... Try Paris... They dont promote anything or do much to cater tourism, but people love it.. South Korea has a dark history... much of which they would like to forget.. Spend more time with locals instead of critisicing the culture for not meeting up to your expectations.
Paris is awful and filthy 😂 we met plenty of locals and had quite a good time, we do feel like exploring outside of Seoul next time we come though 👍 thanks for watching 🙏
Is this the palace of the ancient Korean king? Is it so small? The ground is still mud, not even stone slabs? I thought it was the courtyard of a landlord's house!
I am a foreigner who studied Korean history and culture.. I see comments from Chinese here.. Do not believe their one-sided claims. According to records, Korea is a country with a long history and culture of over 9,000 years. For decades, whenever Korean cultural contents became popular, the Chinese became jealous of Korea and made false and fabricated claims that Korean clothing and everything originated from China. I don't understand why China is so jealous of Korean content and Korean culture
As a Korean, thank you for explaining the exact facts. You may not know, but recently, there was a report in Korean news that Chinese comment groups were praising China, dividing Korea, and manipulating public opinion on Korean portal sites and news articles.
I am a Korean living abroad. I visit Korea once every few years, but every time I go, Korea changes. The changes include not only physical changes but also cultural changes. I feel that Korea has become more busy and more individualistic than in the past when I lived there. That is why it is harder to feel warmth among people than in the past, and I feel a bit cold. However, at the same time, it seems more efficient and more predictable. However, aren’t most so-called advanced countries very individualistic? As for suicide, suicide among the elderly is especially common in Korea. The reasons are poverty, loneliness, and physical decline. The elderly in Korea are not wealthy because they have poured everything into their children. However, the welfare system to support them is still inadequate. This was predicted 20 years ago, but it was not avoided in the end. The most common impressions that European and American travelers who visited Korea in the early 20th century left about Koreans were “slow, lazy, and lethargic” Those characteristics don’t seem to have much to do with modern Koreans. Living things are constantly changing, and I think we only see what they looked like at a certain point in time.

Wow that means a lot to us. Thank you very very much for this information!
Well said. Actually there are over 300 U.S. military bases in Europe which makes most of them non sovereign countries too.
@@TwoMadExplorers Yes, this reply provided very accurate and informative facts in Korea and Japan.

That jelly is made from acorns. But the one thing I don't understand is why non-Koreans eat food with chopsticks food that is more easily eaten with a spoon. I've seen so many videos where people eat foods such as bibimbap with chopsticks among other foods where Koreans don't even eat with chopsticks but with spoons instead.
I think it's confusing for foreigners. Korea is the only place in east asia that uses a spoon for rice.
@@cindyandeddy Koreans eat rice with chopsticks. White rice is easy to eat with chopsticks because the white rice stick to each other. The times Koreans eat rice with a spoon is when they want to dip the rice into a soup they are having with the rice. But they don't eat fried rice or bibimbap with chopsticks as it is so much harder to pick up the separated grains of rice with a spoon. Some Chinese people eat fried rice with spoons unless they want to hold the bowl of fried rice right next to their mouth. In Japan, they eat curry rice with a spoon, not with chopsticks. Any dish where rice is mixed into some sauce, it is generally eaten with a spoon, no matter which Asian country it is.

enjoy!

There are many resting places of mind to heal because they are under excessive stress. In other words, metaphorically speaking, there are many diseases, so there are many medicines. In Korea, foreigners visiting just need to enjoy the medicine that is abundant.
A Korean who has succeeded to some extent in excessive competition like me has effort and pride, but ironically I don't want to cause my child the same pain as me. And the pain my child will experience is what I don't want to participate in another form of competition again.
So I feel sorry for Koreans today, even though I think they can take pride in themselves.
I completely agree with you. South Korea is not known for its rich culture..

There are American troops in South Korea. South Korea has to pay a large amount of military expenditure to the United States every year, and South Korea is not allowed to have sovereignty, because South Korea can become a developed country by the United States, once South Korea does not listen to the United States, the United States will harvest South Korea.
South Korea (as well as Japan) is not a sovereign country. You're right - they listen to the USA.

Go to the Forbidden City in China and compare it with the Korean palaces. You'll see the differences between a suzerain and its vassal state.
The Chinese were slaves who were under the control of northern immigrants for more than half of their history.
Individualism is not a characteristic of advanced countries, it is simply a charactieristic of capitalism
