Just for future reference, 1990 was the year ADA was established and required all fire alarm systems to have visual strobe lights and 1994 was when the code was updated to require all strobes to have transparent lens, a minimum of 15 candela, and a rate of at least one flash per second
ElevatorMan5482 ElevExperiencing Productions I don't think that's 100% accurate my local elementary school was built in 1997 none of the alarms have transparent strobes
Interesting...I pass by UMass if I'm in the area...never realized what was there! Thanks for letting me know...now I wonder what the rest of the system is like...wonder if it is an early addressable system... 😀
My school has those alarms all over the building. They are on the same strobe plate as well. It was built in 1993. Some of the newer parts of the building have true alert speaker strobes. I am guessing the panel was originally a 2001, recently upgraded to a 4100ES and plays the simplex Hi-Lo tone.
+NJMoo3652 It definitely does feel old, but has an awesome retro vibe to it. I remember seeing the earlier 4903 series strobe plates (-9101 and -9105) quite often. They would usually have a 2901-9838 (and maybe an occasional 4903-9805 as well) mounted onto them. Sometimes I would find a 4903-9105 with a speaker mounted onto it, usually an Atlas/Soundolier manufactured speaker (Simplex distributed these as the 2902-9711). I only have seen this particular combo once.
+Fahrenheit4051 Having a -9711 paired with one of the 4903-9101's seems unusual, when I think about it at least. I usually associate it with the 4903-9105 somehow. Interesting that you know of a few setups with the 4903-9101's paired with the 2902-9711.
I've seen simplex strobe plates designed from the seventies or eighties tilted sideways. The building they were in, well around ninety-eight, they replaced them w an Edwards system, then a simplex system from '05's been there ever since
This combo seemed to be fairly standard for Simplex voice evac systems around 1990-93, and the LifeAlarm speakers in general seemed to installed regularly until around 1995 or '96. The Hill Center at Rutgers had this combo, last I knew. There's also one dorm at Rutgers (opened 1995) that has a few of these on 4904-9105 strobe plates (the early ADA compliant ones), though they mostly have separate speakers and remote strobes. And there's another dorm that has these as the remote speakers (mostly in the rooms), but the speaker/strobe combos are all Wheelock with the early "WM" ADA strobes.
At my high school auditorium, backstage there's only one of those alarms, but it has the 4904-9105 strobe, if i'm not mistaking the name of the strobe.
A building on my college campus has the flush mount LifeAlarm speakers (no strobes!) It was built in 1987. Yes, Simplex tends to use other companies designs. They had the early ADA strobes that were essentially the same strobe tube as the Gentex GXS. Most of their mechanical horns were actually rebranded Faraday products (9838 and 6120 are the same horn. Apparently, space age electronics designs a lot of their modern stuff.
That's pretty cool! I've heard of the flush mount speakers before but never seen them in person (I saw the Atlas Soundelier version in person more than I've seen this version installed).
I’ve certainly seen the flush mount LifeAlarm speakers. I feel like I’ve definitely seen them in another place, but I can’t remember at all where it was! Other than those, my campus is full of other rare devices, such as the 90s Gentex SPKE4 speaker strobes, which look like a Wheelock E70-LSM-24 but with a Gentex GXS style strobe. And, those speaker strobes are hooked up to 1 of our 3 old pre-Honeywell FCI systems with voice evacuation. They’re so rare that no-one even seems to know what they sound like!! And would you believe it, I missed the drill in my dorm which I believe has that mysterious system.
it would’ve been more sleek for sure especially since these strobe and light plates were only rear mounted though most 2903s were front mounted like the space age ones
that is very cool! it sounds like your voice is on the radio. some day I might be able do that and if I do I will dedicate it to you! so what do you say?
+Jonathan Ryerson Hotel Thanks for the complement! Please, do do it someday, and the dedication would very much be appreciated! Thanks for doing so in advance!
Hi there, I have a question. If I used a small amplifier system that I use my phone with, attached to a 70.7volt speaker, would the speaker still work?
Your best bet would be to get an amplifier that can output to what speakers can accept (I use a Pyle Home PC20MA, which is able to output to 8ohm, 25v and 70v, but one at a time though). A regular stereo system will not work, does not provide enough voltage, which results in a pretty quiet speaker, and will eventually damage both equipment (admittedly, I used to do this for my earlier test videos, but that was before I got the amp). Once you do get a suitable amplifier, you can then hook up your phone. Hope this helps.
If one sees a Simplex alarm in a building, then does that guarantee that the system is Simplex and nothing else? What I mean is, when you see a System Sensor or a Wheelock alarm, it could be anything, any system. Are Simplex alarms exclusive to Simplex systems?
Generally speaking, yes. Though occasionally you will see older Simplex devices connected to a newer non-Simplex panel. For instance there's an Applebee's around me that updated to a Fire-Lite system in the mid-2000s, but retained the Simplex 4903 horn/strobes from its original '90s Simplex system.
attention attention attention, an emergency has been reported, all occupants walk to the nearest stairway exit, and walk down to your assigned re entry floor or main lobby. do not use the elevator, walk to the nearest stairway, do not use the elevator, walk to the nearest stairway.
eh i should get a 4903 and to 6 and 8 series of that combo strobe plate with smart sync and that old 2902 9732 speaker life alarm just in case also. i might see and be the damn judge if that speaker voice evac is kinda beefier than ever than the modern ones. but some fire alarm is sorta quieter ish idk. but it should be bassier and richer and ultimate hi-fidelity like ish.
+CN railfan That combo does seem typical for the time period. The True-Alerts mixed in seems kind of interesting; are they mounted to the strobe plates (I'm assuming that they are replacing -9838's).
+CN railfan Must have been former combos that died, and True-Alerts were put into place, unless this was part of an expansion. If this was not an expansion or renovation, are there any remains of one of these combos where the True-Alerts are now (True-Alerts sit larger backboxes w/ adapter plate, unpainted area where the plate once resided, etc)?
That voice evac tone gives me so much nostalgia from when I watched fire alarm videos on UA-cam between 2008-2009.

They had voice fire alarms in the 80's? I had no idea, I thought that was a 21st century thing. Wow you learn something new everyday.
70s too probably
Simplex 2001/2120
We have these in the UMass hockey stadium in Amherst 10 minutes away.I Saw these for the first time a couple days ago when I went to a hockey game.

Was it a voice 2001? I know this is a very late reply
Old! For some reason I feel like this combo looks really nice and very retro
+NJMoo3652 It definitely does feel old, but has an awesome retro vibe to it. I remember seeing the earlier 4903 series strobe plates (-9101 and -9105) quite often. +NewEnglandElevators Two schools I attended had 4903-9101's, with -9838's in the main areas, and 2902-9711's in some of the larger rooms.

Always have liked this combo!
+Sirens & Aviation I have not seen too many of these in this particular combo, usually with the -9838. It definitely seems like a cool combo, however.
A shopping mall near me has these combos. In the convention center area they had flush ceiling mount beige LifeAlarm speakers.
This combo seemed to be fairly standard for Simplex voice evac systems around 1990-93, and the LifeAlarm speakers in general seemed to installed regularly until around 1995 or '96. Another place that uses this combo is the SAP Center in San Jose, which given the start of your comment and being built in 1993, makes alot of sense.
A fire alarm that gives you voice evac to save your life
At my high school auditorium, backstage there's only one of those alarms, but it has the 4904-9105 strobe, if i'm not mistaking the name of the strobe.

These are the fire alarms they have at the Westin in Downtown Pittsburgh, for some reason the have 4096 speakers in them
I wish simplex made a speaker strobe of this combo like the 2902-9739.
it would’ve been more sleek for sure especially since these strobe and light plates were only rear mounted though most 2903s were front mounted like the space age ones

@@NewEnglandElevators hmmm. By best option right now then would be 25 or 25/70 volt speakers. Thank you for the helpful information. 👍
@@kingcarwashnfansdrivesetc8364 You're welcome, hope to see some Speaker/Strobe videos from you soon! Great videos, btw!
I thought that faraday made everything for simplex

That Simplex 2902-9732 LifeAlarm Speaker looks like it was made by Space Age. I'm really not sure tho.

the sap center uses the 9202 9732 fire alarms
At 7:29 I heard a little chirp that sounds like a spectralert advance power down sound.

i use them to be syncronized to prevent people having seizures rather than free run though. but the smart sync nac simplex etc are useful though.
That is the same strobe plate that I have in my class

I think you mean .5 WATTS nice vid btw
Nice catch!
@@NewEnglandElevators Do you know what year the original simplex voice evac was from?
I've seen this set up before
Wow
Looks like the wheelock DHS el1
I see what you mean, probably the grille on this speaker seems to have a bit of resemblance to the EHS-DL1
45 flashes/MINUTE not second, also, it's .25 WATTS, .5 WATTS, 1 WATT, and 2 WATTS, not volts
+Bob Trevek Wow...I usually get the watts one right. The flashes one, not so much. Good catch!
Thank you!
+Bob Trevek You're welcome! Sorry about that, had an extremely busy day prior to filming this, and my brain was somewhat mush. :D
No price is right siren
Sadly not this time around (though it would probably sound cool in this speaker, kind of like what TPIRMAN1982 did prior, similar speaker).
nice old alarm!!
+Fire Alarm Guy221 Thanks! I really like the early 4903 series devices, they have an interesting design to them.
