Hello George...just an update on the radio: I received the radio from Amazon today and it now comes with a 9 foot wire antenna with a brass spring loop on one end and an alligator clip for clipping on the expandable antenna on the other end. It is better than described!!
@@Mikey-ym6ok as far as I know, nothing. We have a local AM radio channel 666AM that is our emergency channel for bushfires or floods etc. We used to dial a free number for the time or weather but they stopped that afew years ago. We also have local state emergency support for damaged houses in storms etc and also have WICEN which is basically ham radio volunteers help in storms or local events like car rally etc but no national radio frequency like NOAA here.🤷♂️
I almost had my question typed about books on tape when you answered my question. Hmm, I think I'll have to work this into my "save for". Thank you for another great review (& ugh, another thing to buy... But then again, yay another great product to hopefully have).
I have the HRD-701 it is the digital version of this under a different name, its very sensitive on FM and AM. It is a great unit and sounds very good for its size, very loud and no clipping from the amp. It was under $50 AUD. on mine the short wave goes from I think 4.8 - 21.8 Mhz and FM can go down to around 64-108 depending on how you set it up.
I have a similar unit that also records audio... the bl5c is great.. I have a little game console that uses them and i use a nokia candybar phone as a charger. its 911 capable.
Wow that is small. I have 2 Baofeng UV-5Rs with the upgraded USB batteries and 18" antennas. They work pretty well. but they are much larger and heavier than this little guy.
Other than the antenna, what makes a shortwave radio more able to get a good signal? Us ignorant folks just often think, "well the one that costs more", but what do we REALLY look for?
This is so useful! With a headphone jack its a 10 hour lasting mp3/ multi radio/ loudspeaker/ memory playlist outdoor dream gadget. I have say i found this through a youtube "recommended" gadgets video. I gotta saythe stuff thry recommend these days is expensive garbage, eventually with some snooping i vame across this. Its just what I've been looking for for bushcrafting trips. Saying that i really cant see me leaving it at home based on this awesome video! Hahaha i love it
Hi my friend thanks again for such a well thought out, in depth video. Can i ask does this have a headphone socket and if so where? Thanks man im still getting one but figured you will know. Peace
Just bought one of these in “new-unused” condition for $35 with all accessories included!! VERY STOKED!! It’s definitely going to be a central fixture in my woodcarving shop :)
@@Iridium242 Nice! I didn't know you could pick up needles from there, but I think thought that's what I heard on the NOAA channel. I used to be able to hear that from Newberry. I had one of the realistic brand weather cubes from the '80s and used to hear it from there.
Hello George. Really enjoy your videos. I'm definitely going to get this little AM-FM-SW radio. I recently purchased a Radio Shack DX-150B shortwave radio. I did watch your video on making an antenna for a shortwave radio. I have a technical question for you regarding an antenna....I live in a townhome community in Arizona. As such, there are restrictions as to what we can place on exterior walls or running wires through a window into one of the Association trees. My building is very similar to your home in terms of a stucco exterior and a clay tile roof. I was thinking of running the antenna wire through an interior wall up into the attic crawlspace. There I could run a wire about 40 feet. Will I still be able to get the same reception indoors in the attic as I would running a wire outside into a tree? Thanks in advance for any suggestions you may have.
Heck yeah, that will work, matter of fact there are hams that run attic antennas with great success in HOA communities, so it should work great for receive!
Its pretty good, been using it on and off since I got it and only charged it once, seems to last a good long time, at least 7 hours straight while i was working in a project one evening
I dropped mine about a dosen times and it still works like its out of the box. (Which in my case wasnt that good, but other people had more luck with it.) Only thing that happened is that the battery popped out during the drop.
It looks like a mini Jukebox or a casino slot machine, I love it!
My thoughts too. Or an old national Panasonic mil model from the 70's.

How’s the battery on it?
@@RayRayfrfr Works fine. Nice small shortwave radio.
a handy pocket radio that still does the basics. No NOAA in Australia but still handy with an external antenna.👍
