I was lucky - as a cello player - to play in a youth orchestra and record to CD this symphony nr 1 in 1987 at ORF in Vienna. It is etched in my soul. Thank you and Mahler.
There is NO ONE I would trust more to give a a fair-minded, sharply observed and deeply perceptive account of Mahler. The video on the ninth is invaluable.
You guys are endowed with incredible memory. You can go on like this for a few more hours and different languages! Nobody's music moves me more than GM's, and you are fantastic at it.
I enjoy Mahler's music, your interpretation of it and the explanation you gave with this video! By the way: I hope you've had a wonderful 70th birthday!
Fischer's Mahler 1. Horrendous. He makes a complete mess of the finale with that sudden gear change right at the end. It's like his late for his bus home.
Strongly disagree. I think it's a beautifully played and recorded performance and the ending, while quick, doesn't strike me as hurried or rushed at all
I could listen to Maestro Fischer talking about music for hours! 😃
And it's wonderful that the two greatest living conductors, Ivan and Simon Rattle, have such deep relationships with Mahler.
