Thundercat deserves more recognition, his contribution made To Pimp A Butterfly what it is. You can listen to his intricate bass lines running all over the album.
im honestly so bummed he only played bass on one song from DAMN im quite sure his contribution to TPAB is the reason i fell in love with kendrick's music in the first place
To Pimp a Butterfly is an all-round goddamned masterpiece, I will never forget the fact it lost out to Taylor Swift for album of the year. But it also made me aware of Thundercat and I'm about 99% sure I've seen all the recorded performances and unfortunately I missed his show in my hometown this year but I will not give up till I'm catch him live!
There is no "deserving" in music. There were and still are loads of Thundercats who disappeared without trace. Fans of great successful artists who are not themselves musicians seldom realise this truth but musicians usually know it if they are experienced. Fans want to believe that their heroes are super special and this habit involves refusing to understand that there were thousands of amazing talents like this who died and disappeared without trace. Also the "super special" thing is the relic of an authoritarian idea - the kind of idea that people like Kendrick Lamar and Thundercat would not endorse. So I expect the usual bafflement and avoidance that comes with ideas that are difficult to understand and accept. And I do not expect to hear anything but abuse or silence from anyone who has read this comment. Bring it on you evil EVIL young DOGS.
Saw him in Bristol not too long ago and when this came on, everyone in the room lost their shit. You could not find a better well-accomplished trio of players this side of the planet. Highlight of my year so far.
He might be the best bass player on the planet (right now). His ability to do ridiculous things on his 6 string are incredible and he's a helluva musician. There's a whole bunch of these guys who play together, Thundercat, Anderson Paak, Flying Lotus, Kendrick Lamaar, they all do stuff on each other's records but Thundercat seems to be the one they all want to work with because he's a genius. And from a very musical family
Thundercat, Dennis Hamm and Justin Brown are an insane trio! I’m so glad I’m alive in the same timeline as them. They just gel together so well… extraordinary musicians
quite a lot of good bands on jools holland, heres a random one for you Songhoy Blues i also enjoyed Daymé Arocena also tiny impalla , slaves and a bunch of others
that drop @ 2:52 is so fucking great. i love how he did a little new melody on that bassline. this one is so goddamn funky - can't believe it, what a moment !
such a technically proficient and beautiful song!!!! such a cool cat to look so unfazed about just playing a bazzillion key changes and redonk melodies!!!!
I know right? It really bring such different sound to the song. No wonder Calvin Harris includes a lot of piano to his last album with same funk genre it works really just fine
@@romeaffair Yeah, all of this has roots in many other genres, musicians e eras - the 80s fusion, Jazz, 80/90s r&b, Jazz from the 70s,80s. But the way they approach and use these influences is in a way that the result is something unique. The sound and timbre the Thundercat get with the bass, with all these different fx and shredding on top of a soul/r&b feel sounds modern. Of course, everything we hear in music nowadays is based on music from the 70,80,90...
I feel like Thundercat's bass playing, in spite of its obvious complexity, is really underrated (oops, a bit meaningless). I never really hear anyone talking about him, though perhaps I'm looking in the wrong places...
i play bass, i think his playing is from another planet but as said by nyakz, as i'm more into the music than the playing i don't really give a zbreh about that
You are definitely looking at the wrong places lol He is a legend among jazz cats. There is even a compilation video just for his licks/solo/chops. Definitely not underrated, and relax, you're not the only one who noticed it ;)
Found Thundercat on the Eric Andre Show. Never knew he contributed to TPTB, by the way. Just wanted to say he's already one of my favourite musicians. Period. After only three songs I've heard incl. two lives.
The keyboard dude has a certain talent to add brightness to its solo, I feel that its always expending and taking you somewhere else, feels exalting the whole solo mais strange at some points ... I don't know if this was really clear, in my head it was at least lol
I love that he has a security tag on his beanie.
ha i noticed that!
do you think he stole it? it's so weird to see ahah.
Oxidized Gaming noticed that too haha. Gonna start a tremd before you know it.
Oxidized Gaming I love that, I watched it live on tv....never noticed
"give it back cos its not yours to take"

Agreed.

Music is in such a good place at the moment with cats like Thundercat and Anderson .Paak. Both of them on Jools too! Great to see
Simon Jefferis great music, always finding new music like Thundercat and Did, brilliant music
fancy seeing you here!
you know it! ;)
Of course, the king
Don't tell the "music is dead"people.
He's an amazing musician, when I heard this song I thought it was a classic from the 70s, if your song sounds like a classic it will become a classic
The original intro is from "Footsteps in the dark " - Islay Brothers ;)
Bee gees
@@ArthuroRocker it's just the drum beat
Still my favourite Thundercat track....can't ever see myself getting sick of it.
Mine too.. this is now my fave live version!!
I frigging love “Is it Love?” from the album The Golden Age of Apocalypse. That track makes me believe in eternal life LOL
Victoria Alison Glastonbury version is now the best version
check out song explorers pod cast on it, only 17 mins and goes way in depth about its creation!
Same, it takes me back to old school R&B/soul.
Saw him in Bristol not too long ago and when this came on, everyone in the room lost their shit. You could not find a better well-accomplished trio of players this side of the planet. Highlight of my year so far.
Oliver Cant - Right now Tosin Abasi, Javier Reyes and Matt Gartska
Ya man he is a force of nature live, it blew my mind
Man this version is amazing! Drummer is chopping just perfectly in the pocket. So beautiful to listen to!
I can't believe Jools is still showing cutting edge, amazing acts after all these years.
For anyone who doesn't know...Thundercat also used to play bass for Hardcore Punk/Thrash Metal band Suicidal Tendencies.
I heard this in a 6music interview. Okay, everyone has to start somewhere, but that surprised me.

love how the crowd just did not understand how iconic this was at the time
Thundercat, Dennis Hamm and Justin Brown are an insane trio! I’m so glad I’m alive in the same timeline as them. They just gel together so well… extraordinary musicians
thank god this kind of bands are still existing
Darkneo7 agreeeeed

They're really into it, bass face and also loving the drummer smiling.
best live version i've found of this track.. that keyboard solo nails it!
This man is rekindling my trust in music. Thank you, Thundercat.
i saw them exactly one week before this was filmed. one of the best experiences ever.
keys player is nailing "them changes" literally
In his days away from racing, Brendon Hartley finds himself as an accomplished pianist, playing alongside Thundercat.
Nice spot 🤣
HE'S STILL GOT THE SECURITY TAG IN HIS HAT!!!! Love this man so much!
Such a cool dude, luv it!
"Now I'm sitting here with the black hole in my chest,
A heartless, broken mess."
That is how songs supposed to be. Down to Earth. You have nowhere to build on if you build on fairy tales.
such a technically proficient and beautiful song!!!! such a cool cat to look so unfazed about just playing a bazzillion key changes and redonk melodies!!!!
Unbelievable. One of the standout performances on Jools in the last 20 years.
I love to watch and listen to Thundercat. He'll be up there with the greats.
I love that they've got the drummer up front. We need to see that more often
When was the last time we heard some fusion on a big tv show like this? Holy crap
My god, when the piano kicks in.
I know right? It really bring such different sound to the song. No wonder Calvin Harris includes a lot of piano to his last album with same funk genre it works really just fine
I still cant fathom how he makes a bass make that noise
Stunning!!!
This version is so dope!
Great show great artist great performance....nuff said
One of the most eclectic musician (bassist) in the loop
Absolute BOMB! Proper music. 💣💣💣🔥
Jools is just that good in picking the right artists. The best guests on TV.
His head voice is amazing
LOL that british lady with the teeth grooving it out in the background is the best thing ever

Cómo suena esto brother? 🔥😱🫡❤️
FANTÁSTICO!!!!
Best effects setting on this version , sounds like a talkbox, gotta get that pedal!
Hands down best version he's performed of this song
Just makes me smile!!! Thank god, some decent music on the TV!!!
Just loved how the elderly in the back seemed to like such a modern music like Thundercat
Hardly modern. This is classic jazz funk. Know your history. Us oldies were rocking to it in the 70s

Fantastic bass sound - oddly sounds like Stevie Wonder’s golden period Mini Moog!
Holy shit it does sound like a Moog

so much talent and skill

Hands down, vest version of this song so far. They killed it here.
Dude got so much better at singing on his new album shout out him
Some real skill and talent on display here ! :)
His music really really reminds me of an old 80s band called LEVEL 42. Very similar harmonic structures and such
Good spot my man!!
U remember level 42 had that nice bass 2 then I remember curiosity killed the cat
That pause before it hits 👌👌👌
Top level of jazz
I love U Cat !!!
Pure Groove
This cat got the skills to pay the bills 💰, New Fan right here 👌
OHHH FUCK THAT BASS. ORGASMIC.
Dope!
Players are insane
Unbelievable! It's quite strange to see virtuostic (is that a word? haha) music being played in a pop context.
Yes Sir! 👊🏿👊🏿👌🏿
Awesome bass playing
Alberto Giannetto one of the best I've seen in a while, he's a great artist with a great personality
sooo good. killed it

Is it just me or did anyone else see the Gundam Model behind him by his amp?
I also saw it. He is a big fan of anime.
Thundercat is stupidly good at bass

No one going to comment on that outrageous harmonic @ 00:16 ?
