This lesson covers one of the universal patterns performed in Cuban (Latin) music. If you are familiar with the album, “Buena Vista Social Club,” it is a wonderful example of how the Cuban style is based upon a rhythmic feel.
The sound of Buena Vista Social Club was meant to bring back the traditional trova and filin, a mellower take on the Cuban son and bolero, as well as the danzón. This lesson’s rhythm example and guitar riff work together to compliment that Cuban sound.
Latin rhythms are generally referred to as, “clave.” The clave is a recurring groove that can function in different ways. This lesson’s example is a 2-bar clave based upon quarter notes, as well as, eighth’s (rests & notes).
The lesson begins with a study of the clave itself. The first example is meant to be practiced as a “clapping & counting” exercise to help establish the feel. It begins with two quarter note attacks in the first bar on beats 1 & 2. Then, on beats 3 & 4 the down-beats are rests with the up-beats (of 3 & 4) performed on an eighth note. In the second measure the clave is reversed (as mirror image).
The pattern for this lesson is taken from a common guitar figure heard in many bossa nova and bolero performances. When practicing the riff, take notice of how the guitar parts follow the outline of each chord. The 2-bar phrase targets notes of Major & Minor 3rd’s and 7th’s, as well as, extended tones.

Ry did'nt go there to record with them. He was introduced to one or two surviving members by his driver / security guy. He eventually got to meet more of the members and put aside his original project and go on to make a documentary about Buena Vista SC.
