20:57 "Does she have to commit seppuku?" The female version of Seppuku (lit. Belly Cutting) is called Jigai (自害 lit. Self Harm). Notice Mariko did not say "Seppuku” but "I will take my life at sunset". When performing Jigai, the person ties her legs to prevent indecent exposure during death convulsions. Then they take a dagger (a Tanto or Kaiken) and either 1. slash their jugular vein on the left side of the neck (Fuji's attemp in ep. 1) or 2. a stab straight to the heart (Mariko in ep. 9). If you noticed Mariko positioned her dagger above her stomach. In 18:12 Ochiba also said "Tell me, how will PIERCING YOUR HEART protect your son?" (emphasis by me). Every noble woman (samurai's wife) always carries a tanto or kaiken inside of their kimono for self protection or Jigai. It is akin to a samurai carrying a sword. Fuji had one in ep. 1 and mariko had one in ep. 7 when talking to Toronaga. A noble woman is expected to bring her own dagger when she moves into her husband's house after marriage. Jigai is performed when a noble woman's husband commits seppuku or to protect her purity ahead of an impending defeat by an invading army. Unlike Seppuku, Jigai does not require a Second. Mariko asked for a Second because she was a Christian.

Mariko did what she was supposed to do and then some. There are monuments to the real Mariko in Japan you can actually see them on youtube.
Yabushige didn't know it was going to be shinobi. The shinobi was meant to kidnap Mariko, you can see this when they first come into her room, they try to carry her off but weren't expecting Blackthorn to be in there with her. They blew the door open to get to her and kidnap her, but didn't expect her to stand in front of it and be a martyr. They failed their mission and mariko completed hers.
The shinobi weren't trying to kill mariko or any of the other women for that matter. They make it a point to show the shinobi checking and passing one of the sleeping ladies and the shinobi tried to carry mariko away. Meanwhile the shinobi tried to kill john and all of the men. At the door to the shed, they loudly announced that they were lighting a fuse. This is because the shinobi expected the people in the shed to get as far from the door as possible before it explodes. The shinobi like ishido and toranaga's brother underestimated mariko's resolve. She had her own "If you strike me down, i shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine" moment.

Her leading the company though -- and taking on the palace guards -- is one of the baddest, badass things I've ever seen on TV in quite a while.
8:43 On the novel, Mariko included that she was SAMURAI, not some PEASANT, which was a deliberate dig on the fact that Ishida was born a peasant & she outranked him.
Those couple of scenes were awesome. When she tried to leave then when she told them off basically. I just hate she died. Loved her

Mariko is Crimson Sky. She's the entire attack on Osaka. Mariko knew she would have to die one way or another, because only with her death could she turn the nobles against Ishido. And only by sacrificing her life could she restore honor to her family name. So Mariko achieved her personal goal, while helping Toranaga achieve his goal. From a samurai point of view, it's total victory for Mariko.
Like Hiromatsu, Mariko knew her duty well. She was supposed to die to cause a revolt among the Osaka nobles. When that did not happen by suicide, she made sure she died by stsnding at the door to keep Toronaga's plan on track
But Toranaga's plans are always twofold, if not more. Had she been permitted to leave, Osaka would hemorrhage people and power. Ishido would lose power no matter what happened.

It is hard to fight wearing her best dress!
Slow down the gate sword fight. Mariko's samurai makes three cuts. The first cut slices the fingers off his opponent, who is attempting to draw his sword, neutralizing the threat. He then makes his second cut to the second threat, neutralizing that threat, and then the third cut to the first opponent. Hard to see, but what a commitment to detail.
