These Fiero videos do cost money and take A LOT of extra time for me to complete a project. If you would like to show your support and appreciation for continued Fiero videos feel free to donate to the cause! I don’t make these videos for the money (trust me I don’t make hardly anything worth mentioning) I make them for the love and support of the Fiero community. Let’s keep those Fiero’s ALIVE!
    DISCLAIMER:
    This is my first 3800/L67 build so it is partially a learn-as-you-go process. That being said there are going to be things that I will probably do differently in the future. Suggestions for process improvements are encouraged for the better of the 3800 Fiero community but any criticism isn’t necessary.
    TRANSMISSION INSTALATION:
    Thanks for checking out the first video in my 3800 series II build video. I’m hoping to eventually be a one stop shop for most of your 3800 Installation and parts information. These videos will be broken down into different build segments. The FieroRog bracket kit I used to install the transmission is part of a complete install kit. The other brackets will be displayed and installed in a separate video. Make sure you check it out! To order your FieroRog install kit please check out his PFF (Pennock Fiero Forum) post for more information as well as place an order request. You must be a member of PFF in order to make posts. If you do not have a PFF account and would like to place an order you may also email him using the email address seen in the video. Here is a link to the FieroRog bracket kit on PFF:
    www.fiero.nl/fo...
    This video goes through the steps in installing a 4t653-HD automatic transmission. The stock Fiero TH125 automatic transmission cannot handle the torque put out by a 3800 engine and must be replaced. If you are going to use a supercharged 3800 (also known as an L67) you need to make sure that you use a 4t65e-HD transmission and not a 4t65e. The 4t65e transmission IS acceptable if you are using a non-supercharged 3800 engine.
    In prepping your cradle it is suggested that you replace the rubber bushings on your engine cradle. These old, worn and cracked bushings absorb horsepower and over time will continue to deteriorate and fall apart. Polyurethane is an acceptable replacement option and in my case I went with the aluminum bushings for a firmer support. You can get your aluminum engine cradle bushings from Rodney Dickman here:
    rodneydickman.c...
    Installation of those bushings as well as the control arm bushings can be seen in my other video here:
    • Pontiac Fiero : How to...
    It is suggested that the stock Fiero transmission mounts be replaced. These old oil soaked rubber mounts will not be able to handle the torque laid down by this engine and transmission. It is suggested that they be replaced now while it is easier than later when everything is in the car. To order your Rodney Dickman polyurethane transmission mounts click the Link below.

    I learned a lot from the Fiero forums for my L67 swap project. Lots of reading, very little video. It's nice to see this.. Thanks!
    My L67 swap included a full trans rebuild, engine rebuild, wire harness build with mods and upgrades, a P/S pump rebuild, a rack & pinion rebuild, a modified fuel pump module build and a lot of homework along the way. It started right up on the first attempt and it's still running strong after 8000+ miles now. I still need access to a TECH-2 scan tool for PCM, BCM, and IPC calibration and VIN flashing.

    Thanks for taking the time to make videos of your engine swap. Very cool. I've got an 87 that I bought as an unfinished project from someone. I everything was installed but not running or driving. I figured out all the bugs and it is an absolute blast.
    I've got another 87 that I'd like to put a 3800sc in and do the whole swap myself so these videos will be very helpful when that time comes.
    Your video on removing a 2.8 was extremely helpful when I gutted my parts car.

      +Brett C Plumbing! plumbing is my kryptonite. I just can't make it work. I had a running toilet so I decided to rebuild it. After reinstalling it, it still ran AND leaked into our basement. I've also done plumbing work at my other properties and within 3 months a plumber is out having to fix it again. I guess nobody is perfect and plumbing is what keeps me humble ;)

    I appreciate the videos. I. Also looking forward to a 3800 SC how-to video. I have a non running '84 Fiero notchback with a Series I 3800 NA. The car was a custom one-off that my dad built. He put nearly 200K on the configuration. The fuel pump is bad, but I'm going to replace the whole engine with a SC II. Thanks, and I look forward to the segment on the build.

    It's a good idea whenever you have the cradle off, to go ahead and do a bump-steer fix, so your Fiero will handle and go down the road with perfect stability and not jump all over the place. Just die-grind the welds off those tie-rod brackets, turn them around (flip them) to be as close to the control arm pivot points as possible, and weld them back on in the proper location. Then cut the same length off the tie-rods that you moved the bracket (approx 3",) and WALLA...your geometry is corrected, from the factory flaw (mistake!)

    I saw a video of a Fiero drive-train, including suspension (in one unit) mounted "behind" the rear seat of a second generation ('65 to '69) Corvair.
    I've seen videos of Fiero's with various "Go Fast" parts like superchargers ("Enough is not enough, Too much is Just right"). ;-)

    Other 4t65e trans adapt. vids. that I've seen require a cut, and patch mod on the sub frame.
    You're the first person I've seen not do this..

    Great video!
    I happened to stumble upon this, even tho I have seen pretty much all of your other ones. Any idea if this is similar as the F23 swap (as far as bolting it to the cradle.)
    I can assume that is the 3.8 frame, but figured I would ask anyways.

    • @LostNotForgotton
      @LostNotForgotton  8 років тому +2

      +zzzhuh I'm glad you stumbled on the video. The F23 will also need custom brackets to mount it on the Fiero frame but those will be different brackets than the 4t65e-HD. The F23 will sit pretty much where the standard Fiero manual transmission would sit so you can reuse the Fiero manual transmission axles. The frame you see in the video is actually the Fiero's frame not a 3.8 frame. You mount new Fiero Transmission mounts on because the old ones won't handle the torque. Then you mount the adapter brackets onto the Fiero Transmission brackets and finally mount the transmission on. The install is clean with no modifying of the Fiero frame so it does appear as if it has a stock look to it. FieroRog did a great job building brackets to make this engine/trans look like it was meant to be in a FIero. I hope you get an opportunity to do your own 3800 swap. It is really an enjoyable swap to work on so far.

    Hi can you please go in depth about how you are making you 4t65e shift? I
    am doing a project with a 4t65e I want to wire it up to run stand alone
    with a ratchet shifter is this possible? It does have a electronic
    cable driven gear selector I think, How can I make this thing shift and
    work properly in my car? I need more info. (btw the motor is a gen 3 4.8
    so I dont know if a 3800/ls4 wiring harness is any good for me). Either
    way I do not want to use a aftermarket tranny controller box.

    Thanks for the videos! I have watched your removing a 2.8 a few times over the past year, and will tackle doing it in a very short time.
    I now await your soon to be coming, "Installing a 3800" video series. I have a Series III, and there are minor differences on the engine, but through research, they seem to have all the same mounts, with the exception of being a manual or Automatic. Mine just happening to be a 4t65e-hd :)
    You can check out my documented engine swap starting on page 13 of my build thread on Pennocks: www.fiero.nl/forum/Forum1/HTML/083667-13.html

      +JohnWPB Wow that's quite a thread you have going on PFF! I plan on eventually posting a build thread too on PFF. I am going to add some pics I've taken as well as the videos as I get them completed. I'll also use it to ask questions when I get stuck. I've been meaning to start the thread for months but maybe I should sit myself down and actually do it sometime soon. I'm glad you find the engine removal video helpful. After I'm finished the 3800 project I was thinking about making a sequel on how to but the 2.8 back into the car only I'll use a manual transmission Fiero this time around. You are correct that there are only minor differences with the series II and the series III engines so my videos should still be a good source of reference for your build. I have to say that I'm glad your going with the 4t65e-HD. I think you'll save money and time doing it that way. It's a lot easier and cheaper to mount that transmission and build a custom axle than it is to buy custom flywheels, clutches and in some cases shift cables. Don't get me wrong I do eventually intend on doing a manual swap but as a starter swap this is a better way to start. Good luck on your swap and I'll try and keep up on your PFF build thread.

    • @LostNotForgotton
      @LostNotForgotton  8 років тому +1

      +JohnWPB Looks like you got the most important parts already. I would continue to build up your parts collection so when you're ready to start working on it you won't have to be waiting on everything to come in the mail or searching for what you need next. That's what I did but there are still a few other small things I know I'll have to pick up. I've already started editing the video for FieroRog's engine brackets. I wanted to release the video for converting the fuel rail and swapping the valve covers next but I'm still waiting on getting my custom fuel rail in the mail. That was one part I couldn't buy ahead of time because I wanted to do a video of the fuel rail removal. Hopefully I'll get it soon but if not then the next video to be released will be installing the FieroRog brackets, alternator, water pump, pulleys, AC compressor and the accessory belt. One of those videos will be released on 04/09/2016. The real mystery is which one...

    Hello
    Im just about to start my 02 gtp swap in my 5spd
    Id like to use the 07 F30 6spd from the G6
    Do you happen to know what clutch and flywheel and axles i would need?
    Also are you the guy in Ontario Canada?
    I was going to do my own harness but thinking i will just have it done.
    Cheers!

    How do you feel about the Muncie 282 being paired with a 3800/L67 combo?

    • @LostNotForgotton
      @LostNotForgotton  6 років тому

      I believe it's a doable transmission to use unlike the automatic trans and the 5 speed Isuzu. I even had a custom 4spd clutch for the 3800 swap sitting around that I bought from someone selling off his Fiero stock. I ended up selling it off so I know that people are making parts for the 4 speed transmission. Durability would be similar to the 5 speed Getrag where it can be used but you want to stay away from burnouts. The only real complaint I heard about is the gearing kinda makes an annoying ride at cruising speeds because your riding right around the shift point. You'd be constantly shifting up and down 3rd and 4th gear. That's what I've heard. I can't speak from experience. The 5 speed is more popular so finding the custom 4 speed parts may take a little extra digging but they are out there.

      LostNotForgotton Thanks for the reply! Your videos are a fantastic resource. I'm looking at a very clean bone stock '87 GT with a "new" motor and the factory 282. He's selling it way under market value so I need to see what's up first, but I'm planning on a 3800SC swap if I buy it. I'm mainly looking to be faster than a newish camry lol.

    • @LostNotForgotton
      @LostNotForgotton  6 років тому

      Good question. You can reuse the existing Fiero trans cable. You would just have to combine the both the Fiero auto shift arm and the shift arm from the 4t65e transmissions. I have a video on that as well called Pontiac Fiero 3800 HOW TO: Hooking up Exhaust and FIRST START UP. ua-cam.com/video/V9NajLXZNGE/v-deo.html

    • @LostNotForgotton
      @LostNotForgotton  5 років тому

      This swap is possible for any year Fiero. There might be slight differences with the 88 Fiero because it has a redesigned craddle. Other than that you can swap a 3800 into an 85 GT. Lemme know if you have any questions.

    If I could afford one, I would love to have a Pontiac Fiero Mera. And NOT a Mera that those bone heads removed the Pontiac badges and replaced the with Ferrari decals.
    An automatic transmission. I don't get it. What's the point?
    That is not driving. That is putting the car in gear and steering it.
    But to each their own.

    • @LostNotForgotton
      @LostNotForgotton  8 років тому

      The F40 will bolt up but you'll need a custom clutch, shift cables and mounting brackets to hold it to the cradle. People have made kits for these transmissions because they hold up better than the Getrag. I'd suggest searching PFF for someone who builds these brackets.

      +JeremyKerrianne W Glad you find the videos helpful. Depending on the condition of the engine your dad build you might be able to sell it to someone who can get it running and put in their Fiero. That might help offset your 3800 project costs a little. The next video to be released will be building you own custom axles, then attaching the custom engine brackets & belts, then replacing the lower intake gasket (common issue with those engines), then the fuel rail system, then swapping the supercharger pulley (optional) and the last one for this group of videos would be attaching the engine to the transmission. That is a total of 6 videos in the works right now for the first group. The second group of videos will be about getting the engine into the car and working. I'll figure them out in more detail once I get closer to that point. Keep checking back and good luck on your build when your ready to start it!
