    When someone does a beginners tutorial like this, it should always be done like this. Keep it simple just to get started. In the beginning all you need is to make it work, so you can hear a sound and be able to record at least something. You can find the fancy stuff later. GOOD WORK!

    I got back into playing guitar after about 16 yrs. I got introduced to Amplitube and just learned about Reaper. I wasn't sure how to make the two work together, now I know. I am looking forward to doing some recordings now.

    Excellent tutorial video! I've always loved Reaper as a DAW, and I just purchased BIAS FX Professional; this will come in very handy. Thanks for the great work - looking forward to more "how-to" vids regarding this subject!

      Cheers +John Blume, glad you enjoyed the video. I'm sure you'll love BIAS FX. I'd also recommend taking a look at the new series on building your home studio for free. Have a look at video 3 & 4; it's all about free guitar amp sims and stuff. Some great additions to expand what BIAS offers without spending any more cash 👍🏻

    Hi mate, love the videos, definitely very helpful!
    Just a quick question, at around 6:00 in, you click on the numbers on mixer volume level, what does that exactly do?
    Thanks

    • @ReapertvUk
      @ReapertvUk  6 років тому +1

      It just resets the peak that the channel strip shows. So, if you want to retest your max level (as it now may be lower than your previous reading) it will reset the value. 🙂

    I did not know about the monitoring feature, that's cool. Though i'm noticing a big of delay between when i strum the guitar, and when i hear the sound. Do you have any advice on how to maybe fix this?

      Look at tweaking the ASIO driver settings for your recording interface. You can adjust the Buffer size and sample settings to get as low latency as you can without drop outs and sound problems. This should help lower your latency and reduce the audio issue you're finding when playing.

    • @ardalansh9392

      ReaperTV first of all thank you for the great the great video but I did change my buffer size to minimum I have to say the latency is reduced but yet unplayable would be great if you teach us more or make another video to make it clear... again thnk u sir...

    Great, I find this after spending the last few months figuring it out myself, lol. Now would please tell us how we can get stereo tracks without two tracks? I know how to record two and pan them left and right. But people are doing it some other way and I can't find out how. I was hoping you would show us in this one.

    • @jere.pe03
      @jere.pe03 4 роки тому

      Maybe you could duplicate the same recording and pan one full left and the other full right, and then choose one of the two and change the amp, or the pedals, or something to make it sound a bit different

    I just watched one of your older videos on gains staging. Should I be controlling the guitar level through the Reaper interface like you are here, or the actual VST amp/fx? Or does it not matter, as long as you achieve no clipping, without touching the fader? Thanks very much, your videos are simply the best.

    • @WPTuts
      @WPTuts 6 років тому

      NecroBarl I'd control it before it's in Reaper. You're looking to get the best possible recording in your DAW.

    • @dawnpatrol666
      @dawnpatrol666 6 років тому

      Of course lol. I was just curious on HOW to control that level. I see how you arm the track to see where the track peaks. But where exactly is that input control? It looked like he clicked somewhere on the fader, but not on the actual fader.

    Thanks for the video. I enjoy both your Reaper and Elementor tutorials. When I record my electric guitar plugging in my distortion pedal, it doesn't seem to have a very thick sound like some of the guitars here. In fact, some of the frequencies sound too high, making the electric guitar uncomfortable to listen to. I'm not sure if the gain is too high on something. How do I avoid this for future recordings and also fix existing recordings where this is the case? Is there some kind of EQ-ing I can do to reduce those frequencies and bring out slightly lower frequencies to make it more comfortable to listen to? Thanks

  • @Fezzler61
    @Fezzler61 8 років тому +3

    Question. So many virtual instruments now come with mixers in their interface or the ability to add effects such as reverb, panning. In fact, in EZ Drummer 2, you can keep all the midi in EZ Drummer 2 and never drag it to your DAW. I wonder though, for mixing a song is it better to keep the VSTi relatively dry and add reverb, panning, etc. visa the DAW?

    • @ReapertvUk
      @ReapertvUk  8 років тому +1

      +Fezzler61 I think when it comes to things like reverb / delay or any other time based effect that you would want to apply to more than one instrument, it still makes more sense to have a buss dedicated to that so you can ensure all the timings are the same.
      I'm looking in to doing a sort of 'shoot out' between a few guitar based VST's and some of them have their own FX chains as part of the software. So there will be a certain level of comparison included in the video.
      I still tend to EQ / compress separately but that may change with VST's like JST Toneforge that has a full signal path included.

    • @Fezzler61
      @Fezzler61 8 років тому +1

      +ReaperTV Cool. Agree. I always wondered who would add reverb in the VSTi when it may not fit the mix. Now compression may be different as you say. So, yea, time based. Thanks! Another great post.

    • @ReapertvUk
      @ReapertvUk  8 років тому +1

      +Fezzler61 The thing I love about the whole recording thing is that even though there are guidelines and best practices, it's still a case of 'if it works, who gives a sh*t what you do' :)

    • @vedasticks
      @vedasticks 8 років тому +2

      +ReaperTV For more control i agree. use a dedicated effect and bus for things like that.
      It gives you way more options not only changing the effect but also how the effect gets processed, like compressing the reverb or compressing the send for instance, EQing.
      Using the provided effects though can be usefull to get a quick idea when you dont have time to go messing around and just want to get something rough together.

    Many thanks for the Vid Paul, is it possible you can explain how to deal with latency when recording guitar DI?
    Cheers again, Billy

    • @ReapertvUk
      @ReapertvUk  8 років тому +2

      +akoustixx Latency is one of those things that has so many variables - computer speed, RAM, interface, drivers, etc., that it is a complete topic unto itself. I generally find that the ASIO4ALL drivers give the most flexibility and good results. It is then a case of playing with the sample rate to ensure you get stability and no drop-puts. This then will dictate the latency being experienced. :)

  • @ejk425
    @ejk425 5 років тому +1

    Great video. Quick question: when you set your level to -18 dB for input and then played it back after applying the FX, your master got up to around -5.2 dB. I imagine you could lower the signal output from the FX itself to bring that master fader down if you wanted?

    • @ReapertvUk
      @ReapertvUk  5 років тому +2

      You could. It's more about the input signal level than the output. As long as your input is at a good level you can pretty much do what you want afterwards.
      Good quality input let's you do anything afterwards and the source is all good.

    • @ReapertvUk
      @ReapertvUk  7 років тому

      sheldon benedictson first thing I'd look into is what drivers you're using for your input device. Try adjusting the sample rate until you find a balance between latency and any drop outs, clicks or other noticeable issues.
      Alternatively look at ASIO4ALL to see if you get better success with that as your driver.
      I'd also look at using a simpler amp sim just for recording and monitoring and then replace it once you're happy with your performance.

    I've been sitting at my computer for two days now and still haven't had any luck. I've done everything possible and I still can only hear my guitar with direct monitoring but not through the amp sim

    • @ReapertvUk
      @ReapertvUk  7 років тому

      Check your audio interface to see if it has a Mix option to mix the direct sound and the monitored sound. Mine has a mix option so I can combine the input and the playback levels.

    I am barely checking out Positive Grid so I have the Demo Version. While I try to add the Bias FX, it doesn't show it in the options. Would that be because it is the Demo Version?

    • @ReapertvUk
      @ReapertvUk  7 років тому +1

      It's more likely that the path for it isn't registered with Reaper. Check to make sure you've installed into the default VST folder and if not add the folder to your VST library in Reaper, refresh and it should pick it up for you.

      furiouzzzz You should 1) lay down the drum track first, then record the guitar track after, or 2) activate the metronome, set it to click on ‘playback’ (so you can practice in time to the beat, as well as ‘record’. That way you can just add the kit parts in after.

      +F4R3LL1 Yeah, I'm using ASIO4ALL to deal with the devices. What do you mean by sounds terrible? Can you record an example?

    I'm using Bias Fx 2. Sound comes out through monitors fine and everything records, but the latency is horrible. How do I fix this? I've already checked the Pre-Zero Plug-In Output Buffers box but nothing seems to work.

    • @jeffreytraynhamii4460
      @jeffreytraynhamii4460 4 роки тому

      @@ayushchoudhari3847 I figured it out. Theres another pre zero box to hit. When you start up reaper look at the top right for something that says "44.1k 16 bit DIRECTSOUND (because you might not have changed it yet) etc." And it'll be right there along with the option to set up your ASIO settings. Lmk if this helps

    How do i get live sound when using Reaper? When i record i can playback the sound just fine but i can't hear it while i play

    • @ReapertvUk
      @ReapertvUk  7 років тому +2

      Each track you create has live monitoring available. If you look below the volume slider you'll see a play style button and In/Out next to it. Click the play button and you'll see it will highlight. This will now allow you to hear the track while playing.

    Hiya! how to use the modulation effects like teh delay or chorus or whatever effects to not loosing the signal or volume, because if you set all of them in a single channel it will loose the volume strenght and signal. Do i have to use aux buses?? or how to attach them next to the main signal? you know what i mean right?

    • @TrebleMidBass
      @TrebleMidBass 7 років тому

      By the way i have the same setup as you, roland ua 55 + bias fx pro + paulin lecab with rosen and messiah impulses and Lepou amps

    • @ReapertvUk
      @ReapertvUk  7 років тому

      You can sidechain any FX you like to their own dedicated channel / track. This allows you to avoid various timing issues.
      I did a video here on how to do it with a dedicated reverb buss, but you can use it for any effects you like. ua-cam.com/video/UE41-3LA1H4/v-deo.html

    Hi awesome video !!!!! I just wanted to know, i have a USB guitar cable is there anyway i Can just put that in my guitar and in the pc and play like that ? Or do i have to have all that extra gear ?

    • @ReapertvUk
      @ReapertvUk  7 років тому

      Honestly? I've never tried direct USB input but I would guess it's not going to give great results as there are no pre-amps being used. You'd probably be better off grabbing a used or low cost interface.

    Thanks for this video, I have monitors and a Scarlett interface, but I can't hear my audio with or without effects thru my monitors, only thru headphones. is this a settings issue? I was told to wire my monitors into my computer and not in the line out outputs in the back of my interface.

    • @ReapertvUk
      @ReapertvUk  7 років тому

      Your monitors need to be connected to your outputs on your audio interface, not on the PC itself as the audio interface is your input and output device. Ensure that your PC is also using the correct audio inputs / outputs and not the internal audio soundcard on your PC for all audio.

    • @dannysmith333
      @dannysmith333 7 років тому

      ReaperTV thanks for the comment. this is what I had initially thought when purchasing but I was advised by a guitar center professional that I would only get a dry signal if I hooked it to the interface. lol I went and got the correct connections and I'm good. thanks tho.

      Noah McCoy make sure Reaper is looking in the folder you installed Bias in and also clear the cache. That generally gets things working.
