- Without Crisis, would we have gotten Infinity Gauntlet?
In 1985, DC had a crisis in continuity. Trying to understand what was going on in the DC Multiverse was an exercise in frustration. Writer Marv Wolfman agreed and had an idea…that idea turned into one of the biggest and best events in the history of comics - CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS. Crisis not only hit the reset button on the DC Universe, it also raised the stakes across the entire comics industry. Supegirl DIES! Barry Allen DIES! Crisis would become shorthand for high concept, epic storytelling. It’s impact extending now beyond comics, into television, with the CW’s Arroverse version of the story. Crisis On Infinite Earths - Behind The Panel | SYFY WIRE
The thing with most crossovers is that they usually don't have an epic artist like George Perez drawing them. George used his comic knowledge to be a better artist. George likes to add Easter eggs, nods to old comics, and crystal clear detail.
Commentary was spot on. I grew up in the 1960's reading comic books. DC & Marvel were at the forefront, but there were other comic book publishers like Gold Key, Fawcett, Charlton, and even Archie Comics. It was funny, Pete's Barber Shop (where I got my hair cut as a kid) was DC Comics only.... Earl's Barber Shop (my grandfather's barber shop) was mostly Marvel and Archie Comics. But I digress....I was in my late twenties stationed at Fort Wainwright, Alaska, when Crisis debuted. I was awestruck at how good it was. I'm in my sixties now, and I still have my comic book collection from back in the day, and even have the Crisis on Infinite Earth Graphic Novel. And a few George Perez autographed posters I've yet to hang. Crisis was outstanding. I just hope the CW doesn't tarnish that history by falling flat.
As a young reader when Crisis came out, I can say that pre-crisis DC was not to difficult to understand, and loved the alternate Earths. Being able to read alternate WWII stories with super heroes, "mirror universe" Justice League, annual cross overs between the current versions and the original versions of the character, seeing the actual next generation of heroes, were all reasons to enjoy comics. Crisis is my all time favourite event, but it just put unnecessary handcuffs on creators (which they still operate under), while making things make way less sense (which story is no longer canon, and which is), and worst of all creators have spent decades retelling old stories rather than telling new ones.
I would agree, I really enjoy the multiverse.
I was floored when Barry Allen died!!! I almost cried when Wally West took up the mantle!
Cried in a bad way?
@@legowally8308 Not really. It was the fact that Wally took up the mantle after being away from the New Teen Titans and getting over his sickness.
The flash got me man. George was amazing at these horror movie like drawings of violence. Just seeing flash waste away to nothing, back into the speed force was devastating to my teenage mind.
That's the problem with Marvel and DC. They've made so many versions of the same characters that it got very confusing of which story arcs/versions were Canon. This is what's killing the comic book industry instead of them pushing new or characters that were slept on. Too many unoriginal writers working on the same characters creating their own versions of characters well past their season.
My theory, and I still hold to this even today, is that this was to save Superman as a character.
The funniest thing in Crisis was one of the original lettercolumns taking totally dissing the almost-concurrent Secret Wars. They compared Secret Wars to DC's Super Powers, designed to sell toys, and explained that Crisis had more important goals.
Funny how Didio’s favorite moment was the death of a legacy character. You’re not helping the meme buddy.
One of the greatest storylines I’ve ever read
And there hasn't been a story in DC comics that great since.
@Dami Because she was his only living relative. Well, except for his Uncle Zor-el and Aunt Alura who were living on Rokyn with the rest of the previous inhabitants of the Bottle city of Kandor, all of whom being Kryptonian are technically related to him if you go back enough generations. Which also means there's the Kryptonians in the Phantom Zone too. And least we forget, people consider their pets part of their families, so there's Krypto, Superman's pet dog as well. Hmmmm, being the last son of Krypton isn't quite as lonely as it's made out to be. ;)
The comic was bad. Read it today and see it
Dami wow
Jose Caceres Read harder
I just found this channel a few weeks back and I have to say it’s one of my favorite things. Mike such a smart and thoughtful interviewer who asks the kind of questions I would ask and some I’ve never thought of. I LOVE hearing about the processes, techniques, all the stuff that goes into the sausage that Mike gets into with artists and writers. Keep it up.
Kara and Barry's death were amazing and so glad they got their own chapter for their death. My other favourite is Lex Luthor Sr, Ultraman and Crime Syndicate's death in the early chapter. That stuff was so emotional and Pariah coming there. It was crazy.
So who is going to survive this crisis
I will survive the crisis
I've said this MANY times and on MANY other Crisis related videos - Barry Allen DID .... NOT ..... DIE!!!! He became one with a combination of The Speed Force and The Time Stream, a singularity that took decades for him to re-emerge from.
They retconned that, originally he died
When Crisis came out it was a real "Event" Everyone couldn't wait for it to arrive in the comic store. To this day it's the best limited series (in my opinion)
You are correct!! Nothing else comes close.
I think by Barry passing away we got a great character in Wally West.
Yeah Wally is my favorite flash. He has all the best stories and I love the Flash family.
Fun fact about myself: My previous rap name was *Crisis,* which I, of course got the idea from this comic event. And I still even refer to myself as "Crisis" in some of my songs!👍🏾🎤🎧🎶
If there is something I really regret, is that this book has not been able to do it in 3 great epic movies.
We did finally get "The Judas Contract", current DC animated continuity be damned, and it was great. They should take the same approach, and produce "Crisis" as a several parter. And if I'm really lucky, someone will do "The Great Darkness Saga"!
Exactly! To this day, the Crisis on Infinite Earths is my favorite event in comics. There would be no Frank Miller's Batman: the Dark Knight Returns, no Batman Year One, no Watchmen & no Infinity Gauntlet. DC Comics & comics in general is where it is today b/c of the Crisis.
You are correct. We also wouldn't have Kingdom Come.
Sadly The Grate Crisis is responsible for the major reboots we have today like Zero Hour, The New 50ew, rebirth and G5. they are trying to recapture the success they had with it. sadly they are chasing the high that they can never get again because at the time we had never seen anything like it now it is a tried and tiered trope that we have all gotten tiered of. I wish they would just give as good stories and well writing characters. please do think that what I said is an indictment of crisis but an indictment of the comic industry today that has lost imagination and creativity and is obsessed with a political massage, much like Hollywood. add that to the drive to make a cheep dollar. I have been re-reading G.i. Joe from the 80's and Crisis and they are better written if not always better drawn, inked and colored then today's books just like the older movies and 99% of TV shows are better. well I will get off my soap box now thank you for reading this rant.
I gotta disagree. I personally liked Zero Hour. It was more of a time Crisis than a multiverse Crisis. And Hal Jordan's motivations to rewrite time were understandable. It also killed off Justice Society members who were too dated & corny for the current era. And the art from the 80s can't compare with the art now. The art in comics is far more diverse in range than it was back then. But John Burne and Geogre Perez were the exceptions. But I do agree that creativity is lacking in a lot of areas today and that the New 52 was trash.
Even though I listed Zero Hour I liked it. My point was to the constant reboots that we see today.
@@nightwingnum1226 Yeah, that's true. DC has had, what? Like 5 reboots since the first Crisis? It's kinda ridiculous
Crisis on Infinite Earths, while a great story in and of itself, was not the roaring success it is often made out to be. In retrospect it did away with a lot of cool concepts DC wound up reviving. And created more continuity headaches than it solved. Ironically it took multiple additional crises to make sense of everything again. Er, sort of. Even Supergirl came back after only a few years. Good thing too as she was always a great character. Especially when drawn by Michael Turner.
You call 18 years a "few" years? Supergirl died in '85 and was reintroduced in '03. Between Zero Hour and Superboy Prime, the universe had changed significantly since Crisis.
Worlds lived, worlds died, and nothing was ever the same
Nothing lived... The Superman that grew out of Crisis was a wimp... The preCrisis Batman couldn't beat Superman...
Unfortunately, CoIE gave DC an excuse to scrap their existing continuity every 15 minutes (or whenever they hired "writers" too lazy or untalented to research the existing continuity). Nothing is more confusing than dozens of continuities. Not to mention that a long-time fan has spent hundreds (maybe thousands) of dollars on the continuity he/she knows. It seems awfully unfair for DC to unilaterally kill the continuity that you invested in to pacify whiney inexperienced writers.
fake news super girl was one of thier best selling comics at the time of her death. but that is none of my business
It seemed like as though DC wanted to get rid of her to shine a light on Superman again.
It didn't need to happen at all for me. The more convoluted, the better. I had no problem following and understanding the multiverse! I lived for the annual JLA/JSA team ups!
That was one of the two unfortunate after affect losses, the other being Superboy, and the affect on the Legion of Superheroes.
My favorite crisis moment- The final battle with the Anti-Monitor and a close second-the Death of Supergirl.
comic historian and comic book author Jeff Rovin revered to the Crisis as one of the most inane concepts in comic book history.
I was not a DC fan prior to Crisis so the series didn't mean much for me. It did excite me to start reading DC afterwards. I really enjoyed Byrne'a Superman, Booster Gold, Batman and JL
1986-2011 (Post-Crisis) is my favorite era of DC
issue 7 is on my wall between batman 50 and batman 251 ,...a place of great glory
My favorite death in CRISIS was the sudden demise of Earth 3's SUPERWOMAN. She was an evil, alternate version of Wonder Woman who often battled a heroic alternate version of Lex Luthor. During the CRISIS, Luthor sees a wave of antimatter about to destroy Superwoman (who apparently doesn't see it coming behind her). He yells out a warning, but she's so annoyed by him that she's in the middle of yelling back "Luthor? What do YOU wan--" when the antimatter wave disintegrates her. A close second on my favorite CRISIS death list is the demise of the Legion of Superhero's Kid Psycho. He's seen running from the antimatter wave, but he sort of just trips over his own feet and knocks himself out. While he's out cold the antimatter wave, of course, disintegrates him.
*Thanks for saying Kara's name the right way, to a nerd it means alot*
@milster They do get worked up over the goofiest little things.
Great event, but most people overlook that Supergirl was a totally different character in the Legion of Superheroes where she was a fully developed, heavy hitter in the Legion which was compelling and worth watching. She was ironically underutilized in her own comic, but as a main character in the Legion, she really shined as a strong female hero.
A Crisis needs to happen in DC needs to rid Dan Dido and most of the writers and retcon all of New 52 and recent post Rebirth once you do that DC will fine
i always wanted to know more about the original crisis story back in the 50s
I read kara death over and over at age 12 and cried so hard for a character I never cared about before.
She went out as such a hero and this story made her a bigger deal
Supergirl is my fav show they wont kill her I just hate theres more fans for superman then supergirl they wash her to mych as a charachter
There is a reason for that but without Superman there wouldn't be a Supergirl. I don't think they will kill her in the series. The season isn't even done yet.
@@knightweb85 um what supergirl isnt superman's daughter she can exist without him and proved it time and time again plus shes stronger I just think pple r sexist
@@cindyvindrik492 Superman was first. Her whole reason is because of him. She was created as a means to bring a female demographic to Superman. She can have her own comics and be her own character but she will always have that recognition of being Superman's cousin. What makes the least sense is she is still called Supergirl despite being an adult being a grown woman. You are right though. There are fans with sexist views towards her and those disgust me. She has been able to grow to being a far better character from her silver and golden age years. Just wish she grew into a different name.
@@knightweb85 tbh I'm glad she is called supergirl but I blame society more then I blame the writers what the condentaiton is like recently the acteres has created a post on domestic violence
@@cindyvindrik492 I don't know what is going on. What happened.
There's also a 3-part animated movie series produced by Warner Bros. Animation, in which the final part will be released next year.
i love crisis on infinite earths it was really awesome
DC Comics have been hitting the reboot button too many times!
11:17.....yes we would have still got "Infinity Gauntlet" without "Crisis"...Marvel had already done "Secret Wars" before "Crisis"(and "Contest of Champions"...the first limited series comic)
Camelot 3000 was the first limited series (maxi series). The first miniseries was World of Krypton. Both before Secret Wars
This happens because of surveillence Gofors. People who conduct surveillence and start to ACT ON IT. Instead of authorities acting on them. Millions of people GOING TO SPEAR A KNOWN TARGET, Me. I'm blamed for Shoe brands I can't wear, Logos, Weight lifting, Video game play, And Nonthreatening speech within my place of dwelling. So is my family. I was displaced in the United States and blamed for what happens when you displace a man's recourses.
I am not a fan of Crisis infinite Earths or the CW Network versions of Dc Comics Hero's to me they are Characters from an alternate Universe. they are interesting. The Actors who play them are excellent but not the good old DC Comic heros of the 1950's & 60's & 70's When I was heavy into reading comics. I do not like the changes DC comics made to the Standard 1950-60's-70's DC Characters.
I didn't read the Comics but for the Arrowverse CW Version it was the End where we get Specters VO and the Culmination of the Event with the Reveal of them Finally going Form Some Kind Of Justice Team, and I also Like all of the Cameo's that was cool too including the Ezra Miller Flash one, and finally my last Favorite Part was...… I Know it was Really Small but I still Liked it, and that is the Brief Scene where Supergirl and Batwoman Almost Came to Blows.
Does anybody knowa which is Marv Wolfman´s secret about bringing back flash on Crisis comic
?
As a kid, this blew my mind. The artwork is amazing. The story was amazing. It got me to read DC comics, especially Superman (Which I haven't missed an issue since). It was a good time to be a comic book fan.
We can be heroes.
The COIE from the CW is nothing compared to the comics, but hell I was blown away when they announced they were making this, the OG crisis.
WOULD MAKE A GOOD STORYLINE FOR A DC FIGHTING GAME
do I hear a plot synopsis for Injustice 3?
@@thedude3065 Injustice should be the next CW crossover event. That would be fun to see.
The dceu needs this movie made
Nah we good just watch Sunday. They will do it justice
@@cwp4eva Pardon the pun.
Kevin Nelson hahaha
It killed comics... It's not a coincidence that a lot of shops closed 5 years later. Crisis came about because Stan Lee ticked off his talent and they all went over to DC... DC was better than Marvel in the '70's until it became a 2nd Marvel...
Superman is one of the best examples of what you just described. In an attempt to boost sales, DC brought in John Byrne because of his work on X-Men and Fantastic Four. Although Byrne's Superman has its fans and many consider it to be a classic, it really was a disaster.
Cool insight video.I'm reading the TPB now and it's true that its a game changer. Now there seem to be too many Events, like literally every month.
The death of Barry Allen always hit me. The live action adaptation hit the right feels with the decision to kill OG 90s Flash.
Does anyone else see somewhat of a plot connection between crisis and 2016 secret wars? I wonder if Jonathan Hickmen used some of that as inspiration for that storyline.
Mike and comics...the best duo!
These featurettes are great! Please keep making them!!
Killing off Supergirl's show?
Spoiler : she is shooting for the next episode post crisis.
I’m surprised its still on. It’s gotten to political for my taste.
SupergirlBestClips is Grant Gustin shooting as well?
Kevin Michaud go away
I am still pissed they killed off Aquagirl.
Pleas follow the story of the comic and let Kara Zo-el dies. After that they can reboot the show aND hire a better writer Team. Hire also Laura Vandervoort again as Kara Zor-el. Maybie that bring pease in the Supergirl comic fandome.
Poor explanation of Earth 3.
At the time I enjoyed this series more than Watchmen
Crisis was a great story for it's time but it opened up the door to tell far better stories later on. It's sequel, Infinite Crisis was a way better and far more detailed storyline. Hypertime and the 52 Multiverse are also great concepts rooted from Crisis.
It was impressive
Another aspect of Kara's death was how it played out in the Legion of Super Heroes and her relationship to Brainiac 5. Several issues prior addressed this relationship, Brainy's failing mental health, and yet somehow resolved beautifully with his knowledge of the circumstances of her death despite his feelings for her. Amazing how some things just fall in place!
I collected issues of Crisis .Like way back in the day when it was new and fresh. to read ,And I thought it was one sweet read back in the day ,And years later bought the graphic novel or trade paper. to reminded. how cool of read is ,Cause find don't quite. remember the whole story when get older ,And everything that came post Crisis On Infinite. Earths. was so cool ,So yeah recommend. comic. books readers. to buy it ,Since it's has lasted very throughout the decades. .
I want Tyler gone. I don't like his Superman character. I would rather see Brandon R. take on the role for the rest of Supergirl. He really makes a perfect Superman to me. I believe they are killing his character of Atom off and it would be great to give him the Superman role. We need losses that make the show better and I think this would improve The CW shows. They need to combine the different earths and I believe this would be a perfect change. I really don't think a show about Superman having a baby is going to be any good.
I think the actual DC bodycount was 26. I could be mistaken but it wasn't hundreds.
technically it was billions, just in the first few pages of the first issue alone (when an entire Earth, Earth-Three, is wiped from existence)
@@greendream848 Yes, technically. Course I'm referring to on-panel deaths of major to minor DC characters. Even the Inferior 5 survived, but we didn't know about it 'til later.
I always thought that the pre-crisis DC was NOT too difficult to understand and (while the series involving all these characters was exciting to read) the DC Universe was wrecked in it's aftermath.
Love they killed supergirl. It was beautiful superman in tears could only get better if superman got it too! Plus doing it in the arrowverse smh.
If every 10 years for regular humans are like 1 year to superman the 1938 Superman would only appear to be 39 years old in our real time .
Is this channel still active?
Thats why am sticking to limited series from dc like dceased. Mainstream comics seem recycled over
i o g
cool
It was a waste. And they have had so many reboots they could open up a shoe store
And after almost 4 decades things are 200 thousand more complicated and harder for new readers to enter into this universe.
Plus there was only one type of reader and kids aren't allowed anymore.
Dc rules
Ha hey rekt supergirl

if I remember, this screwed up Hawkman's story even more. lol.
technically, it was Hawkworld that did that.
I still have #7 from when it first came out.
Have yall done the swat kats tv series.
Can I Be honest crisis on infinite earths is the best comic that was ever made old & new it’s the best.
i think they are going to reverse supergirl/superman image.
No
First to like and comment
The flash
Great video
The Flash.
"Even more superheroes! And even more leather!" Sigh. Check out the CW's version of Crisis I will not.
It's hard to explain to later readers just how HUGE Crisis felt at the time. It really was the biggest thing in comics.
