    Ok so Squid Game has a pretty big ending. Not only does it reveal a big twist about one of the fan favourite characters but it also sets up a lot of things for the future that I'll no doubt be milking in 400 videos over the next three days.
    Though it seems pretty straight forward we actually have a lot of theories about what's going on including how Il-Nam planned his death, why he could still be alive and the way that the Front Man is selected.
    Hopefully after you watch this video it'll give you a new appreciation for the show and make you think that everything isn't as simple as it seems.
    Now the series ends with Gi-Hun going to see the Il-Nam as he lies in his death bed.
    Though Gi-Hun initially wants to kill him he agrees to play one last game with the old man in which they bet on the fate of a homeless man out in the cold. Il-Nam says that should no one help the man come the stroke of midnight that he will win and in doing so it'll show just how selfish that humanity is.
    However if someone does come and help him it'll prove that the mentality he's had his entire life is wrong and that Gi-Hun's way of looking at things is right.
    Just as the clock hits twelve the police and a kind samaritan arrive to help the man but Il-Nam dies exactly as the clock strikes 12. It's a strangely poetic scene that starts a brand new day with Gi-Hun carrying a brand new mindstate. However what if this was all actually a game in itself and Il-Nam planned it out perfectly including the exact time that he would die?
    Well it's an idea that's stuck with me since I first watched the show. Everything just seems so neat and the fact that things happen down to the exact second seems very very suspicious.

    Something folks are missing (or at least glossing over) about Il-Nam and Gi-Hun's last scene is what this final game is REALLY about. Gi-Hun could at any point have helped the dying homeless man himself! BUT he did not. The thought didn't even occur to him. THUS Il-Nam won in the end because he proved that he and Gi-Hun are the same. He got Gi-Hun to watch someone die all for the sake of (betting on) a game. Gi-Hun was watching the man die just like he was watching horse races at the beginning of the show. He's already become just another VIP.

    • @Hazevamp
      @Hazevamp 2 роки тому +708

      Bingo! Almost everyone seems to gloss over this simply because someone came to aid the homeless man at th last minute. But really Gi Hun was no different than the VIPs. He bet on another person's life and not once does that register even if Gi Hun because he is too wrapped up in his win.

      simply, not.
      The mere fact that they were in a bet implies that gi-hun couldn't get involved, thus turning the bet to a 100% win. Don't get too philosophical over this.
      Nothing tells us that had gi-hun not participated in the games ever, would he have helped the drunk guy in any other scenario anyways.

      Same thing i was thinking… why not just help him yourself instead of waiting to see if the man will die… very selfish. He was so pissed with how Sang Woo played the game but when it came down to self preservation during the game of marbles, he was willing to trick an “old, sick man”.

    In watching the interview with the creator of this show, he revealed that if he made a 2nd season, the theme would tackle issues with police corruption in Korea. Something that I have noticed is that when the masks or the frontman shoot someone, they aim for the head. This I suppose to ensure that they die. But when the frontman shoots his brother, he aims to his shoulder. I think this is important because if the frontman wanted to kill him then he would shoot him in the head, as he did with the square that showed his face. The frontman was shot in the shoulder and he's still alive, following that logic then Jun-ho is still alive too.

    I’ve been thinking about the Marbles Game and I now believe the Il-Nam was grooming Gi-Hun to take his place from the beginning.
    Gi-Hun is both selfish and also a empathetic person and for that reason I think Il-Nam was trying to chip away at his empathy in order for him to fully embrace his survival instinct.
    After their initial meeting in Game 1 Il-Nam went to Gi-Hun’s neighborhood to basically bait him back into the game away from his sickly mother.
    Il-Nam rewards Gi-Hun for being deceptive in the marbles game but also encouraged him to be by pretending to forget.
    In their final meeting Il-Nam is again baiting Gi-Hun to relinquish his empathy and accept humanities worst attributes.
    I think Il-Nam succeeded in grooming Gi-Hun because he chooses to continue playing these games even at the cost of forsaking his daughter.

      i agree, but i think u missed one of the biggest points they made in the show. life is worse ont he outside... so i think he thought the trouble he would have gone thru, is worse then going through the games again....
      1. don't have to deal with x wife 2. don't have to deal with the husband 3. don't have to hear ur daughter call the other guy dad 4.... 5.... 6..... 7..... .... ...
      also, he gained real friends, i think everybody saw that... like the one gangster guy, when he ewas losing, and the other guy kept taunting him..... and that was right after gihung told him to watch ihs back, cuz he has no real friends.... but he gained the old guy, i have talked to x marines, and they miss the ehh, familyness of the military, the fact that u have someone that is willing to take a bullet for u.... on the outside, it was only his mom, and she died, everyone else either used him or whatever... and u could ask "use him how? at hte time he had no money" ... i recently ditched a friend, cuz he looked down on me all the time, he liked having me around, so he could feel better about himself... for instance, at the time, i was 35, he was 55.. so he says, out of the blue, this had nothing to do with what we wer etalkng about... "o so, btw, spiritual points, i feel u get more spiritual points if ur say, 55 with a daughter, than if ur say... 35 and not really doing anything..." ............................ dude, u don't know me, u don't know what i've done, but its funny that he literally called out both our ages, and family situations, and then started going on about how he is better....
      nah dude, im good, no wonder ur wife doesn't fuck u... last message i sent him... lol.. anyway, the games bput everyone on equal grounds, everyone is there for some reason, but really, u should be caring about how to survive, not shit talking... or trying to make urself feel better cuz ur life is trash, ur daughter hates u, ur wife don't fuck u, u lost ur job..... but yea keep me around to talk shit to me... gtfoh...
      i agree with what u said fully, im just adding on, unless i misread... lil tired, binging arcane right now, jinx is now one of my favorite female chars of all time....

    Another small detail that I’ve not seen posted anywhere online:
    In episode 2 when Jun-Ho enters In-Ho’s abandoned apartment, we can see the apartment is small and modeled exactly like the rooms the masked workers sleep in on the island - from desk location, to the bed. This shows that In-Ho more than likely became a worker after winning the games in 2015 and wanted to stay in an apartment modeled after their rooms on the island. He probably then worked his way up to become the Front Man. I also believe he is the first and only Front Man.

    I have a feeling that il-Nam is in a way teaching/guiding Gihun to become his successor. Just look at all the clues :
    - Episode 2, il-Nam shows up to convince Gihun to return to the game, why does he do that only for Gihun? A rich millionaire/billionaire suddenly showing up in the same convenient store? Its obvious he went there for Gihun.
    - Later in the game il-Nam gives his jacket 001 to Gihun all of a sudden with a very odd reasoning. To me it felt like he was giving his seal of approval to show to the frontman.
    - The word Gganbu was used between il-Nam and Gihun several times. First was the marble game, when il-Nam says Gganbu shares "everything". In the end he used it again to invite Gihun to meet him on his deathbed. You can see he was trying to get Gihun out of his rut and move forward. Even in that final scene, they pretty much use a dying man out in the snow to "bet", proving that Gihun is alot like il-Nam. il-Nam even repeatly tells Gihun the world is not fair and that he should spend what he earned.
    - In the final part u can see that the frontman is keeping a close watch on Gihun, practically every step of the way, even when Gihun spotted the "Ddakji" guy at the train station, u can tell he was prepared for Gihun and he even wave to Gihun from the train. He was planted there to trigger Gihun. They dont want Gihun to get on the plane, all was done to trigger him to come back.
    Just my 2 cents but it would be cool if in 2nd season, Gihun actually becomes il-Nam's successor and works together with the frontman.

    I just realized that Gi-hun is the only one that appears smiling on his character photo, which could also imply a connection with the "fake/wicked" smile Il-Nam has all the time. Another thing that called my attention was the gift box Gi-Hun gives to his daughter, not only resembling the coffins but it has a gun-shaped lighter which also hints the contestants' bodies being cremated. Living was hell for most players so dying in the game could also be a gift for them to no longer suffer a torturing existence. The pistol-lighter is like a toy, not a real gun but is a funny twisted way of referencing the games and violence from real guns. Maybe I'm overinterpreting but the symbolism of last scene being 001 on lights colors (clothing, bed sheets and lilumitared by lamps and 456 wearing dark clothes and standing on the dark part of the room coul also reflect a change on this good/bad poles.

When the siren goes off because of the missing intruder in Episode 5, there is a shot of the players in the large auditorium where they sleep. The camera pans as they wake up and look dazed and confused. When the camera gets to Il-Nam, however, his expression is totally different. He looks scared to death. Upon the first viewing, the average viewer would think nothing of this because Il-Nam supposedly went to sleep with a temperature and allegedly was close to death. After viewing the entire series, you can understand that Il-Nam is shocked and frightened to be hearing the siren at all. The police/army could be at the island. I was actually surprised at how many missed the main message. A critique of capitalism - one of the best shows I've seen in a while. It's masterfully made. "Squid Game" casually reflects the sad reality that is the global society (focusing on Korea) - filled with sexism, racism, misogyny, discrimination in general, betrayal, greed, desperation, pain fear, struggle... At the same time, a story about teamwork, friendship, trust and loyalty, life's true values, selflessness, determination, resilience...
    Each flaw and virtue, be it social or individual, is purposely subtly accentuated to spread the message that in a world where no roles are enforced, when we're down to our basic instincts for survival, we're all equal. It's very slightly reminiscent to "Lord of the Flies," in a sense, but with adults. Very enjoyable. Does humanity exist beyond pretension?

    Gganbu is a slang word for kids used by older generation, which means a close partnership/ally between two people so they share their cards/marbles as shared property. So when Il-Nam proposed they be Gganbu they collectively had 20 marbles. They did not need to play at all. They both already had each other's marbles through a loophole. The only reason Il-Nam didn't present that to the guards immediately was to not spoil the game for everyone else. He only played marbles at all to silence Gi-Hun. Gi-Hun's pestering to play the game nearly got him killed, but ultimately he was spared by Il-Nam.

Then Il -Nam dies on Xmas morning, if you were paying attention to those details. Traditionally what do we do on those days? We give people gifts. The coffins look like gift boxes. Il-Nam, on his death bed, asks Gi Hun, "Do you still think people can be good?" It reveals and hints towards a concept/message the author was expressing in this story. Keep in mind that Gi Hun was the only player who showed the old dude genuine compassion despite Gi Hun facing his own demise and fear, especially during the marble game. Remember, Il-Nam thanked Gi Hun for the experience. It was like Il-Nam wanted to experience humanity one last time before he died. But it's screwed up because the old dude was one of the people who created those games. And even that is multilayered in meaning but too much to get into here. Truly a masterpiece. I think what the last scene represents is, in a way, reuniting of Il-Nam and Gi-Hun. And Il-Nam's death was almost certainly planned because the first man is there, and also because of the exact time of death. I think Gi-Hun is Il-Nam's son, and Il-Nam wanted to meet his son one last time before dying. Otherwise, why would he have called Gi-Hun to meet him in the first place? And another point could be that Il-Nam wanted to see how Gi-Hun has also become a VIP in a way.

    I love how no one is considering that GI-hun CANT go see his daughter. How can he look her in the eye after all he’s been through, knowing that it’s still going on and he’s doing nothing about it?
    That’s not him. He has been sacrificing spending time with his family over the safety of others this entire show. His daughter is safe and healthy right now. Those other contestants aren’t. He can’t go back. Not yet.

      - Stole from his mother to gamble
      - Tried to gamble a gift for his daughter instead of just buying one
      - He gambled all he had on a homless man's suffering, a bet he lost in the end because the old man proved he was no different than him.
      - He chose to give up a life with his daughter for a CHANCE at revenge
      - Going to get revenge on people he knows nothing about but know everything about him.

The drunk put himself in that situation like Gi-Hun did with his gambling. Il-Nam was looking down on the man without pity and only saw him as a game piece. I think Il Nam actually died though. At the end of the games, the loser dies somehow. I think 456 won the bet because someone did help the homeless man (although you could say he lost because Il Nam made him bet and become just a voyeur in the first place); then Il Nam died as the timer (clock) ran out. Then the Foreman was there to do whatever with the body. I think the end also shows the hierarchy. Metaphorically, I think 456’s red hair at the end signifies that he might have chosen the “red square” that time and would ascend the ranks as a guard or even the next foreman. Then the foreman would take Il Nam’s place. Just as the guards have a very clear hierarchy, so do the other managers of the game. But, I hope when 456 goes back, it will be to do good/infiltrate.

    My theory is similar. I think that Gi-Hun is still in a game, or at very least trying to be manipulated by the money he won. When he meets Il-Nam for the final time, Il-Nam is concerned that he hasn’t been spending his money. My theory is that for the game to continue, those who win need to be corrupted by the vast sums of money. They need to take on the mindset of Il-Nam and the nameless westerners who think of the players as horses at a race track. I think that’s how the front man came to be.

  • @Robustacap
    @Robustacap 2 роки тому +4

    My theory is that in order to change the attitude of Gi-Hun, maybe in order to play with him more, Il-nam orchestrated the police to come right when it did. The timing is again so perfect- also consider that it was Il-nam who said which of them was on the side of the man being helped aka Gin-Hun thus winning on The side of humanity.
    Also, it stroke me the same way as @Aman Chaudhary, that Gi-Hun ended being like one of the VIPs, just watching a man die in order to play a game, not saving him. .
    But it was this last game that energized Gi-Hun to act, like Il-nam obviously wanted him to. I mean first the bank manager attempting to find out why he didn't touch the money, and in the end the clearly intelligent Il-nam planned the final meeting to end like he wanted to a clockwork precision..

  • @lizaltman1200
    @lizaltman1200 2 роки тому +21

    I have this theory that Il-nam didn't drug and kidnap the homeless man, but that he did call the police to arrive before midnight, letting Gi-hun win the game yet again (like in the marbles game). It would not be in line with Il-nam's character to involve someone in the game that did not consent (kidnapping a homeless man) rather he is making Gi-hun question his own beliefs about humanity, trusting him to stay true to himself, which he does, and betting against himself with the knowledge that help is indeed on the way. Il-nam had also previously stated that he let Gi-hun win because he had fun playing with him, and this could be the last moment of fun and games with his friend. Il-nam is a character of duality, he's a manipulator and a believer in freewill. He is an old man who never really grew up, wise as he may be, he is a child at heart, a lover of games. (The games are a reflection of the lives these players live on the outside.) I also agree that the water and the clock are very significant. The water could simply be a last gesture of kindness before death or it could be laced with sedative or poison, either way, the clock on the wall and the time of midnight is certainly significant and leads us to believe it is a representation of the timers in the games. I also definitely believe the winners of the game are called back to climb the ladder within the authoritative ranks of the game. I had that thought from the beginning since this is a show about hierarchy and climbing the social and economic status ladder. I can't wait to see where Gi-hun's character goes from here! Great video, gave me new things to think about!

    1. Gi Hun's birthday he said was October 31st 1974 in ep9. Also in ep3 when they scanned him and his profile came up. But in ep1 when he was entering his birthday into ATM, he entered 0426.
    2. Again in ep3 on Gi-Hun's profile, it said his mother's name was "Kim Choon Ja". Also said she's "Merchant" and residential status was "Living together". It was in Korean but that's what it said. So it's fairly clear that's the name of Gi-Hun's mother. But in ep1 on the mother's debit card, the name was "Oh Mal Soon".
