Yeah, my workplace likes to have pizza parties as a treat for the employees. I appreciate the sentiment but it can be awkward to not fully participate. I'll usually have some salad and just smile and say "I'm good, thanks" if anyone offers me any other food. (Oh, and hello from San Diego, California!)
They can't order a pizza without cheese and just veggies?
I haven’t been on UA-cam in a while, and I was so excited to see my Plant Based dad with 30k subscribers! So happy for you 🥳 the kids look so grown as well, wishing my pb family the best ☺️
The prodigal child returns! Where you been?!?! :) Welcome back!
@pbwithjeremy you have another child we don't know about?
Tried to go plant based last year and was immediately met with people making mooing sounds and purposefully pointing out how amazing their burger tasted. I wasn’t ready yet and quit. No one said a word. Now I’m back at it but I literally don’t talk about what I eat. If they ask why I don’t have any meat I just say Oh I’m having steak for dinner tonight so eating lighter for lunch. Or I say. Oh I’ve just learned to eat a whole variety of foods and to try and keep things balanced I have chosen to keep my lunches full of veggies. Thus far it has worked. No one blinks an eye.
That being said, I have to take my own food. The cafeteria puts butter or milk in everything. They even put butter on the steamed veggies. Kind of defeats the purpose. I’ve even asked them to be more inclusive but nope. Never any vegan options other than the salad bar which half of the time the lettuce is brown.
I enjoy food-related celebrations, as well as making a normal meeting more enjoyable with food, but I definitely agree with at least occasionally doing things that do NOT involve food. People don't seem to be able to think about anything else! I remember a day when our department was super busy, and the CEO breezed through, thanking us for our hard work and saying he had put a cheesecake in the break room for us. Yeah, that would be great if we had time to eat it (and if I weren't WFPB). He had the same training/education/experience we did, and it would have meant so much more if he had just rolled up his sleeves and HELPED us! Food is not always the answer!
Next time call them on it :)
I should have! But happily, there won't be a next time, because I'm now retired! I think they say the best revenge is a life well-lived, right?! 😀
My workplace, which is a smallish/growing family owned business, is actually really good about this. Although we are in Alberta beef country, the staff are super diverse so the options at any gathering are super inclusive. It's almost easier to find a plant based option than otherwise. I am so lucky.
That is awesome!
A terrific topic for a video Jeremy. Good one!
Thank you kindly!
I work in a very small office of around 10 people. I take my own breakfast and lunch everyday. Occasionally a visiting VP will order food for the office. In that case we print out a menu from whatever place they decide and everyone marks the menu item they want. In California most places have something I can custom into WFPB. Often it’s a veggie sandwich on a baguette with mustard. Not that exciting but it works or I can eat my own food while everyone else eats the restaurant food. After eating primarily vegan for more than 40 years, I just don’t care what anyone thinks and to be honest, most of the comments are something like “wow, that looks good what’s in that?”. Only issue is our director hates the smell of cooked veggies and I bring those almost everyday but then I hate the smell of his eggs and bacon so we just deal with it. If he says “ugh, broccoli AGAIN!” I good naturely say “ugh, bacon AGAIN” and we both laugh.
Haha - glad you have an office with a good natured group. :)
This is a very important discussion. I work in Brea, Ca (USA) and I always bring my own food because the typical delivery places don’t have anything at all that is WFPB. One time I ordered just a side of steamed veggies & they were delivered COVERED in oil. It hurt my tummy so bad that night I threw up. We don’t have any “fast food” or restaurants that can actually accommodate even when calling ahead. It’s just bad. 😢
Ugh - so sorry to hear this :( In that case, yeah, you just gotta do your own thing
Omg!!!! I got a shout out!!!! 🎉🎉🎉
I dealt with this a lot at my old job. Even being vegetarian over the years, I dealt with a lot of "jokes" from coworkers. When I went vegan, I stopped talking about what I ate and didn't stick up for myself. I've learned better over the years, though. Dairy just wrecks my system for days, and I use that as an excuse to get a vegan option. My area doesn't seem to have a lot of vegans, so people don't really understand what it means when I say no meat, dairy, or eggs.
I also can't stand the beyond burgers being the ONLY vegan or even vegetarian option. It's so lazy. I feel that once they came out with them, restaurants just threw that on the menu and said it's enough. It's not enough. At least have a salad with some kind of protein as another healthier option! I don't always want faux meat 😤
Yes! And a salad shouldn't be so lame that once you remove all the animal products, it's just... lettuce.
@@brenna8829Yes, agree non vegans lack imagination and being adventurous with their food.
@brenna8829 yep! A side salad made from just lettuce, tomatoes and cucumbers is sad and NOT a meal.
Thank you for making this video. I have issues with not having anything I can eat at work several times a month.
You are so welcome!
Hallelujah for calling out restaurants. Yes, some of us eat plant-based and also want to eat a whole foods meal. I agree it isn't that hard, but I am surprised by how few restaurants are able to accommodate.
Right?!
Another awesome video Jeremy and yes agree that restaurants/takeaways and other hospitality businesses without a vegan option that doesn't involve mock meat/processed foods deserve to go out of business. Love 🥰 the video and love ❤️ Jeremy & family.
Thanks David!
Great video!!! Hi I'm Susan from Winfield Pennsylvania! Love your videos!!!
I like the idea of just being able to opt out of meals with a gift card in place of. I typically bring my own food anyhow. A card to my local grocery store would be fine by me for recognition. I don't expect restaurants to cater to every diet. Transparency though is important and I can decide who I do business with. Bear here in South Carolina.
Glad this helped!
This was excellent, Jeremy! I love the idea of the healthy vending machine or the subsidy.
Thanks! But people have to ASK for it - companies aren't likely to do the right thing on their own
I haven't had too many issues as a teacher in a school, but I'm not very picky. I'm super happy with a baked potato and salad at all functions...and maybe some fruit. My biggest challenge is the food gifts from students and their families. I try to make it clear that I'm WFPB, but I still receive all kinds of unhealthy gifts. I donate the candy and chocolate gifts, but it is more difficult when I receive very thoughtful gifts like home baked cookies and cakes. In my introduction to families at the beginning of the year, I casually (still feels super awkward) mention that I love fresh fruit as a gift. Looking for suggestions on how to better handle this situation.
Hey Tamara!
So this is what Woolie does. And it might feel weird and awkward, but let me know what you think. Do your own version of:
"(introductory remark to welcome them). Something that might be unique about me is that I have a very special diet (you can be specific if you want - but that might just be more confusing) and as a teacher it's sometimes common to get wonderful and thoughtful gifts from student and their families. I'd hate for anyone to spend time or money on food that I cannot eat or enjoy, so please if you're going to give food as a gift then fresh fruit is the easiest and simplest and tastiest for me! Otherwise I will likely have to end up donating it elsewhere."
@@pbwithjeremy Perfect. I'll give that a try for the 24-25 school year! Thank you for the thoughtful reply. It's much appreciated!
I've had this experience so many times, thank you for actually talking about it. I also have a relative who thinks they need to figure out what I'm going to eat every time we dine out as a family, its very uncomfortable . I'm an adult, what I'm ordering shouldn't be a group discussion but my family treats me as if I can't order for myself.
At least they care enough to worry - it's usually the opposite!
Man, this was an awesome video! 💚
Thank you Jen!
All good points. Thank you!
Thanks Jeremy - may need to listen to this again. You have addressed lots of my concerns.
Glad it was helpful!

We have no rights based on diet. No hr department. My boss caters our store through a friend of the families and it is always Louisiana cajun style food. Jambalaya, red beans and sausage, veggies with bacon or lard, fried dead birds etc.
I am a pick your battles kind of gal and this battle wears me out at the thought of bringing it up. They know my dietary preference as I work in a spa and I bring it up at every product training. I do not promote our products that are not vegan and have made that clear. I bring my own food every single day, weather reward, celebration or whatever. At this point in my vegan practice, I can't even watch animal products being shoved in faces so I often eat lunch alone anyways. I had a panic attack watching a room of about 100 people crack open and start eating eggs at seemingly the same time. I had to walk out.
I just make it a point to be social at other times.
Thanks for sharing this. Insane that they cover those other things and not dietary inclusivity. I'm confused how your company doesn't have someone who handles HR.... they must.... especially if there's 100+ people there.... who handles the hiring or any complaints?
I think it's worth at least asking if there's a way for them to provide you a meal compensation for special occasions. I know you're trying to just "get along" but perhaps there's others out there that might benefit as well... just throwing it out there. Appreciate how committed you are!
I hear you not wanting to make waves. However, I think that there’s so much your employer already protects the staff from that maybe your boss who orders the food for occasions isn’t knowledgeable or doesn’t realize what being vegan means in terms of food. Maybe you could educate them or offer to help them with the ordering. Maybe they could make you a vegan Cajun rice and beans dish. It was so amusing to me today when I spoke to a restaurant employee on the phone and asked about vegan options, she included seafood in the list of options. Many people don’t understand.
I worked for Weight Watchers at the time when I went fully plant based. That was a tough one. The women I worked with were all about their hard boiled eggs and string cheese. I was definitely an oddity and got some shit for it.
Sorry to hear that Bonnie!
Thanks Jeremy! Hi from Jordan in Colorado Springs
Hi Jordan!!!
Hello from Blanco, Texas
Hello there Karen!
Darsha says hello from Belleville, Kansas! ❤
Hi Darsha!!
OH YES, The office Christmas party......Prime rib and Pasta salad with bacon and dripping with mayo...we made a pasta salad for you too with just noodles and red pepper strips !! Oh Susan since you don't eat meat can you bring the salad...Lol the comment are endless. I usually just bring my own food so they don't make a big deal out of it.
Not okay. Honestly - that's a situation where you need to just actually have that awkward conversation with them. Ask them, "Do you want one of your employees to feel like they aren't part of the group?" approach it from THAT angle - they will never say that they do - but they have to understand that those micro-aggressions do that. ALSO it's discrimination.
Most people act out of ignorance attacking veganism. I generally tell people that I have an allergy to milk and eggs and that I don’t like the taste and texture of meat.
I've played the allergy card - restaurants are TERRIFIED of you getting sick because of that. They could give a shit if you're just hungry because of your "dietary choices"
I love when I do that and they're like "Is that a real allergy?" like they KNOW :)
I play the allergy card in restaurants sometimes too. The server will sometimes ask “is it an allergy or a preference” so they know if cross contamination will be an issue. I always say allergy because I want to be sure they are being extra careful not to add dairy to any of my foods or animal broth to my soup! So gross! Works like a charm.

In my last job, when they were organising a work barbecue and I asked "what can we vegans eat?", my boss replied "GRASS!!! HAHAHAHA!!!". Laughing at his own joke, although of course it wasn't an actual joke because nothing vegan was being ordered and my only option was going to be whatever grass I could find in the yard.
I would have TORN into that man. Honestly - that's a situation where you need to just actually have that awkward conversation with them. Biggest restaurant pet peeve, homemade bean burger served on Brioche bun. So many times, I just want to scream! Why take your one vegetarian option and put it on butter bread so it’s not vegan! 🤬
Okay done complaining now.. thanks for encouraging diet related advocacy! Hard but important!
SAME. "Oh... yeah we didn't think about the bun."
People just don't care if it doesn't affect them.
Hi there Jeremy and Co. Thank you for the video - interesting and informative as always. I really appreciate the time and effort you put into your content 👍
As a fungi-botherer, I thought you might want to take a closer look at cordyceps and decide whether or not they’re for you, ethically. I’m not yucking your yum, just most people aren’t aware of these fascinating fungi’s unusual lifecycle
Thanks again 👍
Thank you for this - do you have any resources you'd recommend on that topic? I'd only seen positive things. Thanks in advance!
Hi Jeremy, I really enjoyed this video. Any chance you could provide a link or reference to food preference being a protected human right in Canada? I’m aware of the HR protection for religious regions but interested to learn more about thd regulations that apply when it’s a personal choice. Thanks again for another informative video!🙏👏
It falls under discrimination.
It is easy to find fried vegan food. No oil is much more difficult. I would like to go on a cruise but I don’t want to be a burden to the kitchen. How do you travel to places where you don’t pack your own food?
I bring snacks with me OR I'll pop by a grocery store when I get to where I'm travelling and load up on stuff for snacks or to replace meals if needed. And then for other meals I'll just do my best or accept that I'm travelling and I might not be able to be "perfect". I just try to enjoy it and not stress about it too much.
Vegan is somewhat supported where I work, but eating WFPB is just unknown. At one place they gave me cauliflower instead of meat! I was like: yes, thank you, this is healthy, but I don't think a vegan man would have been satisfied with that. For me it was ok, but still a bit light. So, yes to beans, tofu, tempe etc. With a decent amount of veggies, if that's not too much to ask. 😮
Right?! KEEP A CAN OF BEANS ON THE SHELF :)
A coworker literally hates me mainly because I’m vegan and quiet.
That person probably also hates themselves. And just remember: it doesn't matter if they hate you. You can't control it. Go on with your day :)
@@pbwithjeremy thanks Jeremy! I really appreciate it 😌
Oh the timing of this. I work for a very conservative company who snub all things meatless So yesterday we had a huge retreat and they announced the food would be sandwiches wset up buffet style but that around the corner were gluten free and vegan options. I was like ooo that’s a first and I happily went to see. 😂was a bowl of chips and a bowl of coleslaw with a dressing they claimed was Vegan 🤣🤣🤣 literally I always bring my own food I trust no one lol
That’s not cool. You should seriously look up your rights where you live.
Your employer needs to be more imaginative and adventurous than coleslaw and chips. They need to be educated in what Veganism is and what vegans eat.
L
I have been to too many retreats that 4 out of 6 meals were frozen veg in tomato sauce on white pasta…and this was with prior notification. I just had to quit going 🙄….
Booooo. Sorry to hear that.
Yep my work there were so many unnecessary jokes from the senior leadership team around me eating plant based just constantly....
Now im no longer working with those guys (they all left or got fired) so the jokes thankfully went away... but now the current leadership team only ever accommodates vegetarian opinions... they do pizza or sandwiches with vegetables, mayo & cheese.
You should ask them if they want their employees to feel left out - they'll say no - and then explain how this behavior makes them feel that way and offer to help them be more inclusive.
A vegan restaurant can't cater for a carnivore. Let's not eish them out of business.
Do you mean omnivore? I don’t think there’s many people who actually eat a carnivore diet. And omnivore would have no problem whatsoever eating at a vegan restaurant as they could eat everything that’s on the menu.
My last workplace was horribly stressful. But they never cared that I didn’t eat meat. We rarely ate together anyway. Awesome tips for people who have to deal with this kind of juvenile behavior. 😎🫶🏼🤗
