I've been flying since I was 16 and at age 19 flew around the world by myself in the same 1981 A36 Beechcraft Bonanza I still fly, becoming the youngest person ever to solo circumnavigate by aircraft.
Now, I'm sharing all kinds of aviation adventures with YOU! Ride along as we explore the world from the air and get a close up look at some of aviation's best flight experiences and destinations.

Excellent video Matt. I'm not sure that all of your followers realize how much extra flying time, taxi time, take off's and landings that you have to make to get these "Professional Quality Video's". I for one am grateful. Seeing N367HP coming into the island from a ground point of view really adds a nice touch.
Yep great vid except it just seems like the life of a truck driver going back and forth across U.S snacking
tropicthndr Except YOU can take the same routes as a truck driver. Snacks too.
What I like about your videos Matt is the fact that they not only about the flight but the destination too. Thank you for sharing.
Good explanation of not always going with ATCs precipitation recommendations, as they do not usually have the most up to date info. It’s ALWAYS the pilots decision where to go, many times if I had followed ATC that had STRONGLY suggested a heading when u can see out the window n also have real time radar info. It’s so easy to get sucked in to a sucker hole.
Solid flight; I like how you talk-through your decision making process.
Really cool that you included the wx brief. I am an aviation meteorologist for the NWS in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Was really cool to see that you take your briefs seriously! I've also had to explain to controllers and others about the radar delays. It can def make things complicated. Next Gen radar tech will certainly help in the next 20 years with scan times on the order of seconds rather than minutes! Ill be starting my PPL here in the next few weeks once it stops snowing! Great videos keep it up!
Fun fact about Northern WI, actually that whole area has been logged off (clearcut) and grown back to what it is now since the explorers came. It still has that 'untouched' feel, but it blows my mind to think that it has all been logged at least once in history. Always love seeing you fly in my home state. Keep up the great flying!
Matt, your editing is spot-on. Multiple landings and takeoffs all spliced together. Awesome brother!! Nice job.
Sitting in my tiny apartment and watching your flying videos brings me so much joy
Your videos are unbelievable in production quality man! I know how much time and effort that takes, the drone shots in this were on point! And that definitely wasn't your first rodeo with weather, nicely done man!
Your videos are still my favorites. Amazing quality and great exploration of the destinations...not to mention I LOVE your plane! I was at KOZW just 3 days before you posted this video, but probably your flight was a a while earlier. Keep up the great videos!
Thanks Matt, another great video. Thanks for the explanation of Nexrad and the time delay.
I loved this video. Will watch it a few times. Thanks for all the work you put into it.
13:16 I don't particularly care about flowers and plants, but little shots like this really add up to give your videos a cinematic effect, and show the effort and care you put into them. Keep it up!
Really loved this one, the North and South Fox Islands were very interesting to see... Possible bucket list places to fly to... Well, North Fox at least...
shes such a pretty plane matt. I love what you do, makes me want to fly. I love how it makes us feel like we're in the cockpit with you.
Really interesting series, ... sitting in rural Thailand bogged down in development projects in SE Asia, this is a great escape when a holiday is just not possible....Thanks guys keeping an old man entertained and educated.
a) really enjoy the quality of your videos. b) really appreciate you're including some of the pre-flight because young people will watch your videos and would otherwise not see/recognize how much work goes in to the prep for a safe flight. c) still worry about you a little bit flying some of the stuff you do in a single engine plane (eg some weather, some ice, some night over terrain). (it's been a long long time since i've had the pleasure of flying and i do miss it sometimes). d) have a great flight!
I love your videos Matt! You've given me a great idea for a new drinking game! Every time you mention getting something to eat whether it be snacks in the plane or a nice restaurant at the airport, everyone watching has to take a shot!
Matt, too bad you missed landing on North Fox, 6Y3 - it and South Fox are among the most beautiful islands ANYwhere and I've covered both perimeters and much of the interiors of both since I've been flying for the last 33 years. Although it is difficult to get to South since David Johnson has owned most of it - don't attempt to land on his beautiful PRIVATE 5000' rolled asphalt runway! I can only go by boat to the east end where the lighthouse is which is very frustrating with my Cherokee a mere 10 minute flight from my base, 6Y8, Welke Airport on Beaver Island. The RAF has done a splendid job of re-opening the North runway and it is a great asset to the flying public .... tho prior to their officially assuming responsibility there were, 'um, known to be guys slipping over, 'um, from Beaver and Charlevoix to mow trying to keep it barely usable. 'Um, it was a 50-60 minute walking trip with a 22 inch mower down and back - know how long it takes to mow a 3000' strip even 25 feet wide - with the mower stalling over and over just trying to get thru a 10" swath of tough grass 3 feet tall??? And yes, it can get soft after periods of heavy rain - check and use caution. But it was well engineered and drained when it was built in 1961-2. You should have just dropped in on us on Beaver, SJX or 6Y8 :-)
Matt your photography is excellent. Really enjoyable video as always.
Thanks Jon!
jim calhoun out of northport michigan built that runway years ago. A barge got his heavy equipment out there. Nice and smooth and drains fairly well.
At the east end of n. fox there is a little road
with a barn and a bit further there is a fairly nice house overlooking the coast, or at least there was. good place to have a lunch, swim or camp.
That west wind usually settles down nicely once you drop well below the tree tops. I used to fly there out of 5 d5.
Always fun to fly in northern michigan. good memories
thanks
Excellent ! Fun stuff ! Thanks for takin us along . later 😎🏁
The drone work take the channel next level. Plus the time it takes to get those landing shots. Always great production. Awesome stuff.
Great balance of technical content and travel/leisure vibe. Never knew there was another "Sky Harbor" besides PHX.
About time matt thought you gave up flying that remote control tow thing is so cool
I love Duluth. One of my favorite places and would live there in a heartbeat.
Duluth is interesting, and across the border in Superior, WI is a museum dedicated to the life of Richard Bong, the highest scoring US fighter ace of WWII. He was from the nearby town of Poplar, WI.
Another great episode brother. Excellent footage! Hope to see you at Oshkosh this year.
Matt I learned how to fly in Duluth and been into Sky Harbor, even though my Cirrus doesn’t glide well :) I agree crossing water at an appropriate altitude is very safe.
I am an instructor next door in pontiac, if you are ever in town for a bit longer would love to meet up and go fly with you. Love seeing places I frequent in your videos!
I took lessons many years ago from Tradewinds... where do you work?
@@RonixViva it's at flight 101, don't have a lot of instructors at the moment but not alot of planes
Nice video! I didnt realize how beautiful those islands were either, will have to come check it out too.
Wonderful engine sound......phantastisc visual material.....just great! Keep it up guys!
I earned my PPL at KSUW a few years ago, and did lots of patterns at KDYT. Good to see the area again. The Richard Bong Museum in Superior is/was worth a visit
There is some beautiful country out there! Thanks for sharing!
Good work bro!! thanks for keeping AVIATION alive!!
Always a pleasure flying with you Matt as the back seat passenger. :)
Thanks for the great video Matt I have been following you for a while now ,I live and fly in michigan and it's cool watching you fly through and show off our state I enjoyed the mackinaw trip you took with your girl friend
Keep it safe
Steve B
Great video, Matt! Flying along with you in your videos is quite the adventure, and from my own experience, flying in and out of airports with aircraft that are NORDO can be a challenge all by itself. As for your GPS dropping the signal, it makes me wonder if there's a short in your antenna? You are inspiring a lot of people to consider flying the way you're doing: making reasonable decisions, keeping your cool in trying times, and enjoying the adventure because that is what it really is: an ongoing aerial adventure. Ever visit KCGS (College Park Municipal) in Maryland? There's a little bit of a challenge for you. Surrounded by trees on 33 with a displaced threshold (challenging on takeoff from 15), and a fire training facility on the approach end of 15 (gets quite smoky when in use). Displaced threshold on 15 as well due to close proximity to train tracks. Love that quirky airport since I've worked as a lineman there many moons ago. Easy travel distance to Washington DC via the Metro train, and a great little airport restaurant that serves some nice burgers.
Been to CGS many times, never knew they had a restaurant though
@@mattguthmiller Hmm... They must have closed down recently. Used to be a restaurant you could get to via the trail next to the Museum. -sigh- Guess the times really have changed since I've worked there.
Such a clean looking panel.
Matt, google maps does show a parallel taxiway at Sky Harbor , they must have removed since then. The shot at time 9.26 over the right wing you can still see traces of it on the grass by the taxiway!
TY Matt for yet another great Video
Gotta love that remote hangar tug..!!
I was watching the video, I live in grand forks and hear UND's Archers and 172s buzzing around all day. I had thought the engine noise in the video around 3:00 was coming through my window lmao.
Should have had the shirt say "Bronanza"
Nice!
At 19:37, Matt flies too close to the trees, his friend gets a little uncomfortable - I'm not surprised
Really interesting video. Keep up the good work.
11:22 I saw the splattered bug on the windshield in the upper right corner and I kept thinking it was on my screen and repeatedly tried to wipe it off
"He just took off out of the grocery store parking lot" LMFAO BRUH
I grew up in Caro. Neighbor was part of a flight club there, took me up a couple of times.
First paid passenger flights started between Tampa and saint Pete in Florida first but near same time.
The same plane was used in Duluth the summer before, just not regularly scheduled service northernwilds.com/lark-duluth-making-aviation-history/
Another great episode Matthew! You are a very skilled weather dodger indeed.
Awesome video man!
Really enjoy your videos Matt, but can I ask, where do you get all your funding? Not trying to be nosy, it's just that you are so darn fortunate to be doing what your doing, and living this absolutely awesome dream that thousands of us pilots are so envious of. More power to you buddy, keep the cool videos coming, and fly safe friend!!!
Great video, Owen, pilot monitoring fast asleep, BUSTED, lol.
Nice vídeos Matt!
LOL! Nothing in this (blank)ing airplane works! lol I'm rollin! Love your videos Matt, keep it up!
HES BACKKKKK LETS GOOOOO
Wow, simply fantastic!
That sky was awesome
Welcome back to Michigan!
Another known fact about Duluth is that it has the largest inland port in the world it is massive
@3:00 "Terrain system not available"- why wasn't it available?
Great video love the different places you fly to. I paused the video to see if my name was on that Patreon list may be the next time.will you be at Sun n Fun?
Also, any big flying trips this year on your bucket list? If your ever in Canada, feel free to fly into CNW3. Where I live. About 3 hr from Toronto.
You’ll get a free bed and breakfast!
I love Duluth! Next time go to Grandmas by the bridge!
Seeing those Cessna's on pontoons really brings me back to my roots. The (if I was seeing properly) twin-otter created a situation in which I will not need... Viagra. See you at Sun n' Fun. Thanks for not being a dick, too. You seem a very well adjusted young man with a vibrant future ahead of you. I got my flight training through a local college, which saved tens of thousands - or more - dollars on rental, gas, and the mage in the penalty box (right seat).
What are your plans after MIT? When I graduated from Oxford I had all sorts of grandiose ideas, but I wound up a journalist and essayist (now turned novelist), which afforded me some opportunities for training that I would not have had without generous friends. I've over 300 hours in single and dual, now. BUT, those hours are 25-years-old. It comes back pretty quick, though. Most of those hours were in north Wales, operating in the mountains; flying in the mountains is bumpy, but so worth it - just put up a plastic garbage bin between you and your victim, vomiting all over your glass cockpit... I mean friend!
I've always been curious about how the hell a young man like you scored a Bonanza? Especially when you're in school, *and* then pays the gas to fly all over the country, and into my country.
Please tell me you're not using your body in exchange for your next training opportunity.
Enjoy MIT! I don't know much about the school, but my God they do churn out geniuses.
All the best,
Jack Fenton
Matt, hope to meet you at Sun N Fun. What is your schedule for the week? See you in the skies.
That was a fun video, appreciate the explanation of the trade offs for safety, also never thought about the relatively safer aspect of landing on water at night.
On a more fun note, that little island is amazing, what's the call sign for that little airport? And where do you park if you had landed?
I think the first commercial flight was a float plane in Tampa, Florida
Love your videos! Can’t believe you flew into J Hardy in Howell I live about ten minutes away in Brighton - so so cool! Next time you are in the area come by Great Harvest Bread Co in Brighton - lunch is on us!! I own great harvest and would be honored if you stopped in and I could send you with some bread and sandwiches
Thanks, I'll try to stop in sometime!
Cinnamon swirl bread...yum! I stop by there on my way to Detroit once in a while!
Larry St. George cinnamon swirl is the best!
Plus, if you "fly around Lake Michigan" you're encountering the incredibly busy Chicago airspace.
JBS I will be flying into Chicago for my first ever Bravo airspace this upcoming June. Will be interesting.
How many hours do you have now?
Hey Matt, can you do a Video, where you show us how your Aircraft is maintained?
when you originally said the RAF had reopened the airstrip, and I thought the Royal Air Force? In America? that's odd i thought
Would you be kind enough to share the avionics fit in your A36, I am impressed with your panel layout. I have tried to find it described in many of your videos but it seems that I have either missed it or you haven't mentioned it.
As you are eager to enjoy airport restaurants, we used to have a four-hour layover in Brest (Brittany-France) The meals were exquisite if you enjoy French cuisine. This was way back in 1989 but if it is in existence, I'm sure it would be worth the effort.
First commercial flight; Tony Janice in St.Petersburg, Fl
The same plane was used in Duluth the summer before, just not regularly scheduled service northernwilds.com/lark-duluth-making-aviation-history/
That was awesome guys. I live in WISCONSIN. Duluth MN is gorgeous. But how did you guys get the video of you taking off from the ground
They basically take off with one person on the ground. Land and then take off again and edith the footage.
Hi Matt, once again, great video! I see you've become an expert at making videos from your drone. As with everything you do in aviation, you're also very proficient at this. I just returned last night from Paris via Miami, where I stayed for a week and I thought of contacting you. But, honestly, it was a hectic week for me. It'll be some other time, God willing. I really look forward to get in touch with you and maybe, eventually, meet in person. Take care of yourself and keep up your wonderful flying! Best regards.
Two things, A) I feel like the GPS problem was a result of it not getting the proper software update to account for this weird... thing that got explained in TodayIFoundOut, B) If I were you I'd have the voice alerts turned off when flying in VFR conditions cause they seem to interfere all the time when talking to ATC, etc.
Edit: Wow! That is SO many trees! I thought FL had a lot of trees! Speaking of which, if you're ever flying down here lemme know and I'll come flying with you.
Awesome plane you got there
you ever coming out to the High Sierra Fly In? It's a great time!
Looks like your gps antenna 1 needs replacing.... hope that’s the easy fix
Going to Duluth this July, 2019 to see my Nephews's wedding. Lovely place in the Summer, but I would not like to live through their Winters. Thanks for the video Matt!
Do you use a remote to trigger your go pros at the same time or keep them charged somehow?
Aways a great job, can you please add landing fee amonts? Thanks
Is there an ejection seat for passengers with rude gestures?
A question for you pilots out there.. On his left display, it shows a graphical representation of the runway during landing that seems pretty accurate. What is this type of display called? (I used to know but cannot remember.) And a followup question..... I'm sure it's not approved for this but in the event of an emergency with zero visibility and no other options, could you use that display to successfully land assuming you could only see 10-20 feet in front of you?
It is called synthetic vision. In an emergency, you do whatever it takes to get on the ground safely. I'd certainly give the synthetic vision a try before giving up. Whatever happens, you have to keep flying the airplane.
I might have missed it, but are you coming down to sun n fun this year?
Bose Saturday at 11am, first thing in the description :)
Dang, I totally missed that one. See ya then, thx!
Exceptional video
What a wonderful love story,
What ended up being the fix for the GPS? I’m having same issue on a 650, just random signal loss with that same message.
I honestly don't remember now, but I want to say it was an antenna seal issue.
Wait did you takeoff from flying cloud KFCM?
Matt if you can reply, how do you usually pickup IFR in air? For example, after your low approaches to that little island, i hear you getting your clearance direct to. Do you always have something on file, or is it acceptable to file and get clearance in air(and what do you say roughly if so)? IR student and always confused by this, cheers and great videos
Depends. There it was on file. Often you can just pick one up anyway if they’re not too busy or you really need it.
First airline was in Germany 1909 but they where operating Airships!
Matt if i may ask, how comes you have such a great plane with such a young age?
He is unofficial member of Ocean 14 special skills flying under radar and in the dark
Sam P now i know!
How do you get film. Footage. When you landing. Is there somebody your. Buddy filming. While you land
Just looked up the Bonanza glide ratio and average is 10:1. So figure how high you need to be to glide from 1/2 way across a body of water or sea of trees to make it to a safe landing.
If I did the math right 10560 ft if engine fails at mid point will get you to shore.
Phil has a sweet set up there at OZW
What is that thing you twirl (counter-clockwise) just before takeoff? Is that the throttle, choke? Did you film your takeoffs and land and do it again each time? (Thanks, if so....it was neat).
Jan aaj1an throttle
What plan is your favorite out of all of these. Cessna 150 Cessna 172 Cessna 182
