I rock dual UF8 (16 channels) and a UC1. I honestly can't work without them now. There is nothing like having actual motorized faders and physical compressor and EQ for mix down. Update: halfway through your video. You WON'T need a mouse and only occasional a keyboard to enter track names. The UF8 is a macro beast after you start setting it up. Like watching someone who knows how to use an Akai MPC, Maschine Mk3 or a Push 2 ; your workflow will actually accelerate.
yeah, exactly. When you first unbox your Push/Maschine/MPC/Octatrack/Digitakt/etc. it feels weird and slow, but when the muscle memory finally kick in, everything became so fast and seamless. After all, DAWs more or less are built around the UX of mixing consoles (except inserts are way easier to do). And the popularity of the UAD "virtual hardware" workflow is just another evidence that people like this UX and this workflow. SSL did amazing job with 360 software and ecosystem, and using my new SSL 12 after 2gen Focusrite 18i20 is like having a third hand really.
I have a Tascam US2400 controller.. 25 faders works perfect with Reaper I have my typing keyboard under the desk on little roller rails like a drawer Like a mini version of how some pianists have a midi keyboard controller mounted
I have both the UC1 and UF8 and it useful in my mixing process. It’s part of my work flow, in combination with just a parametric EQ and de-easier, most of the time. Once you get used to it, you can’t do without it. The EQ on the SSL channel strip behaves like the passive EQs and needs learning curve to use perfectly. The BUS compressor and Channel strip compressor is sweet and all I use except in my mastering. ❤
I have zero use for the UC1 cause I dislike the SSL strips (never understood why people lilke that compressor), but that fader controller is looking pretty good for me.
I bought the UF8 & UC1 for my Christmas, I have spent months deleting plug-ins, cause lets face it we all have way more than we need. These two pieces have helped me to get this done nicely. They are my go to on every project. Ive changed my studio and mix room to SSL and I have no regrets. I have used other controllers but these are the bomb.
You don't need the hardware controllers to use the Ssl 360 software. You can use it married up to a touch screen monitor and you've got direct interaction. It's as close as you'll get to being back in the console days
In my experience using it for a month, the UF8 hit all goals except workflow for large projects. It rocked: easy and quick integration, good depth and control over plugins, it was really well designed, etc. But after about 80 tracks, I just couldn't deal with mashing through the banks to find the tracks I wanted to control. I really, really wanted it to automatically snap to tracks that I selected in the DAW, but the integration wasn't there, and I eventually just went back to mousing through everything.
@@marijncinjee ircc, I was transitioning from Ableton to Bitwig at the time, and I do work on Reaper as well. Could be any of those. Either way. It's been almost two years since this post; they might have updated integration since then. I had contacted SSL a few days after I got it and they said they had no plans for those kinds of updates, so I sent it back.
Love my UF8 - Have a console 1 as well for the eq side like a lot of others. Couldn't work without them now. Probs will get another UF8 but perhaps SSL will release a more simple fader version as an addition to the UF8?......
If you think it will be hard on your wallet, this in CAD costs $1089 for the UFC1 and $1699 for the UFC8 for a grand total of $2788 plus 13% tax which comes to a total of $3150.44...Jesus. I would like one but it's just that money thing.I know you are going to grab this, but how long before you decide you need a second UFC8? I guess within a year.

The UF8 i have had for about 10 months and it is such a great controller. I had the consoe 1 and fader 1, i just couldnt get used to fader 1 but loved console 1 so i kept console 1 but ditched fader 1 for the UF8 and haven't looked back. Especially once it's worked into your workflow and you have the macro stuff all to your liking. I couldn't justify the UC1 since it is just for their specific plugins and while their plugins are great, that is to specific of just the two things for me to justify the cost of it. i had considered adding a second UF8 but just haven't had a need to after getting used to the banking.
It's cute to read all the comments about controllers being expensive and unnecessary because they don't affect the sound. Do people really not value workflow? And do people not realise that workflow actually affects the sound? I like the sound of the UAD SSL4k much more than the Softube version. But mixing with the Console 1 is a far more pleasant experience than fiddling around with a mouse and a plugin. And it will result in a better mix in the end. I wish I could use the UAD emulation with Console 1 though. That would be the best.
Thanks very much for the presentation of the SSL UF8 I will buy it now. As you say you just buy new things when M1 Nativ is supported, I guess it is the case right?
big fan of SSL. I mixed on their consoles for quite a few years and I love the plugins. but im 50/50 on these.I dont understand why they made the buss compressor take up half the unit. I dunno, I almost bought these but stuck with my setup. using two behringer x touch extenders (16 channels) and a midi twister to drive my plugins, and a Rocksolid audio control 2. it all fits nicely on the desk and everything works flawlessly. not trying to hate but these seem like WAAY overkill. desk space is more expensive than land in the Hamptons. I think they should've spent more time on the design and got it a little more compact
I mean, Pro Tools is an industry standard for a reason, but i won't say that UI/UX is the main reason tho. I've tried a bunch of DAWs for producing and mixing in 15 years of making music and settled with a Logic Pro, because it's so intuitive and easy to use. The thing i like about Logic is that when i work in it, i don't feel like i have a DAW to master in order to manipulate sounds, it stays out of my way 99% of the time. And if i want some advanced features it's more or less clear where to look for it. The most DAW from all DAWs i've used was FL and Ableton. Ableton is like playing a musical instrument, it will stay in a way of your creative work until you've had enough experience and technique to execute your ideas. And FL is way too complicated and all over the place in terms of the UI/UX

I don't have one of these, nor have I tried it, but I have owned and been using Console 1 for 4 years now (Fader for 2 years?) A controller like this with good DAW integration is fantastic. It's not for everyone, and it is a bit of an investment, but the amount of workflow efficiency you can get out of products like this is great. All just my opinion of course.
However, you put it, it will still be overpriced. If UC1 had built-in hardware, the price would be justified. UF8 it's cool but not 1k buks cool maybe 500-600 buks cool.
Coming from large format DDA and Otari consoles, I’ve always needed faders because it’s the little rides that give a mix feel. Drop into touch, do the biz, hit read. Nuance. The mouse is a creativity straight-jacket.
ah thanks for the method you use: so you get a static balance on stuff and use touch on uf8 then read. I would like to add my recent amazing way to add also = click v-pot 1 button, and 'marker' for all sections of the song, now press eg. chorus 1 marker, and make sure playback goes back same place when pushing stop, select tracks put into 'write' mess with fader balance for that section and don't go into next section push stop before going into next section and repeat once balance is good use latch to finish off the section and read to stop the recording of automation, this works great too :)

Hello, I particularly have a squeak inside the uc1 chassis when all the lights turn on, you hear that when you put your ear to the ssl logo part more or less, the support people told me that they emulated the problem and it is in most units and what can be corrected by a firmware update, do you have this problem?
Wow, it's really amazing how long the manufacturers have waited to release a controller that is almost identical to the Softube Console 1. It's also funny how they are now trying to make the SSL plugins, which weren't quite so convincing in the past, more accessible. "Hey, let's just convince all the analog gearheads with a controller that t suggests that you have an SSL Bus Compresso and some motor faders."
Not sure if you know this, but the default plugin has no analog emulation and is EQ curves only simulate a 9000 console - which is why it is so clean (a good thing). From what I read, the plugin evolved from the C200 console. The newer B plugin does have analog emulation.
this is all boomertech that never has or will work in a meaningful way sorry, the only thing that works is mossgrabers OSC with iPad's. luckily reaper is supported by mossgrabers, the problem is just the control of plugins, nothing compares to bitwig in that regards atm. but here, mixing could very well be enough, which is implemented very well in reaper, noting comes close to a touch fader. motorfaders are absolute trash in comparison. this is my opinion your mileage may vary

I had issues getting my UF-8 to stay connected until one day it would not connect at all. SSL replaced it with a new one, and this one has worked fine until now suddenly the 360 button does not open the software anymore, everything else works fine.
You have one of the very best music channels on youtube. You did an excellent job my friend. Much kudos to you and thank you very much for your content.
Imagine building in a DA/AD conversion and an amp stage just to power an analog voltmeter to indicate compression level :D "How far should we go to build this?" - yes :D
I believe the uf8 is giving me better mixes because I’m not mouse/keyboard mixing anymore. I feel like my mixes are more accurate because I have actual faders to play with
The cool thing about the UF8 is you can connect a max nr of 4 units to get a whooping 32 channel device. I’m sold on this setup. Now find a saw to create some space 😂
i like how you show the reality of buying new shiny gear that looked great in the demo… even *if* it will work as expected from the usage side, first you have the cabling, space and then software/firmware install and update issues before starting to enjoy it ;)
I have the UC1. They did a great job emulating the exact layout on it. I did not get the UF8 since SSL for some reason did not code it for the Eucon protocol and only the HUI. So its useless to Pro Tools users who use Eucon. Otherwise I think SSL is hitting all the marks on all the stuff they have been recently releasing.
This looks like a great start. Does it control other Plugins as nicely as it controls the SSL bundle? (or can I use this with my other plugin compressors etc?) Trying to figure out hardware controller - maybe between this and Softube - but really want it to work 3rd party apps (even if I have to map)
For like 1299$ new you can get the Behringer X-32 Prodcer Version ( the smallest of the 3 full size (non cheaper rack versions) Versions but still i believe it has between 8-20 (all motorized fader channels). & while it can be used as a controller the same as this, & an audio interface as well... those are in fact just bonus uses, as it's primarily used as a an amazing stand alone live mixing console (with a large touch screen.... the ability to also sync several ipads/tablets/or phones up to as well to further control it with the free app) oh its also got tons of great parametric eq/ sidechainable comps/ fx/ etc for every channel & 2bus, etc. +matrix miixer capabilities + can also be used as a multitrack recorder!!..& tons more...oh & it can do all that stand one.. without out a computer!!! honestly this by comparison is a complete & total ripoff... 3 times the price for far far far far less. You can spend a few more 100 $'s & gt one of the 2 larger X-32 versions, or for also a little more (still far less than this ssl setup would cost)you could step up to the Midas M-32's (Midas is also now owned by Behringer... & their M-32 is essentially a X-32 with slightly higher quality PreAmps & other building materials. If you really want to spend 3200$ on this ssl setup for that same ballpark you could get a brand new Behringer-Wing Mixing Console... which i havent looked to mich into but is supposedlyeverything you could ever want in a mixer/all the other things i mentioned the X-32 could do/ + numerous additional features & utilities. (Someone else in these comments also mentioned great success with the behringer xtouch & someone else the Tascam (something 2400) product as well, both probably worth looking into... don't be a suckered & buy this.. there's a lot of better ways of wasting your money.

So there is no solid state and barely any logic in these? I'm not wrong about that, am i?
Better to buy an entire console, IMO.
UF8 is the answer to all plugins that don’t have autogain!
You have one of the very best music channels on youtube. You did an excellent job my friend. Much kudos to you and thank you very much for your content.
Can buy a whole 32 ch board that has daw control for that money.
Imagine building in a DA/AD conversion and an amp stage just to power an analog voltmeter to indicate compression level :D "How far should we go to build this?" - yes :D
Why would they need to do this? The plug-in indicates compression level and the two are linked
@@Reggi_Sample and the present hardware vu meter works with what?
I believe the uf8 is giving me better mixes because I’m not mouse/keyboard mixing anymore. I feel like my mixes are more accurate because I have actual faders to play with
Seems cool, but I do like my Console One. Lots of flavors, including SSL
These are COOL but isn't Behringer X-touch will be more Reaper compatible? Well will see what's the time will tell, cheers man ;)
The cool thing about the UF8 is you can connect a max nr of 4 units to get a whooping 32 channel device. I’m sold on this setup. Now find a saw to create some space 😂
You can buy rackears for them to fit them in your desk racks.
After the software update you have to calibrate the ssl bus comp interesting video thanks for sharing
Fiddly barrier creating...
i like how you show the reality of buying new shiny gear that looked great in the demo… even *if* it will work as expected from the usage side, first you have the cabling, space and then software/firmware install and update issues before starting to enjoy it ;)
The UF8 looks interesting. I wouldn't use the UC1 much seeing how little the softube console 1 gets used (which is a lot more desk friendly.)
And get a Behringer X-Touch ONE as a dedicated transport plus master fader
As the SSL units transport is unclear, fiddly and fussy
I have both and I love them. Good investment.
why am I happy that he like them...?
Built in redundancy
Once you figure out the 360 workflow, toggle keys to control the playback, etc you will love it. UC1 is all I use and it’s great.
Eucon is blocked from avid. Tell them to open the protocol. Just never will happen
Any thoughts on a controller that can give EQ and Compression but everything seems to be faders only. Looking for something with lots of knobs.
This looks like a great start. Does it control other Plugins as nicely as it controls the SSL bundle? (or can I use this with my other plugin compressors etc?)
Trying to figure out hardware controller - maybe between this and Softube - but really want it to work 3rd party apps (even if I have to map)
Actually - this looks to be the business. RockSolidAudio Control Strip or 4k
Mackie 👎
Thanks man. Great stream
I got the SSL UC1 for half of a year, and i sold it because WAS A TOY!
a good looking TOY..
For sure, its VERY far of the feeling you got when u move an SSL knob...
About the quality of the VSTS, are magfinific !
