Hay Anise, thanks. as a 16 year old with Tourette's seeing someone who has this same thing as me doing well and making videos (such as on Draw Curiosity, which I also love) really inspires me to do something and not be afraid of making videos and things myself. so... thanks!
What a superb, helpful video! I do not have Tourette's syndrome but your explanation is perfect for those wishing to learn more about it. Also, you have a beautiful voice.
I don't have Tourette's but it interests me because of my OCD. I find the disorders to be slightly similar (with the intense urge and then a compulsive action) and the therapies are so similar, too (ERP and Habit Reversal Therapy). The fact that they're co-morbid conditions is interesting as well! I've had what I call "small tics" that I think developed after I developed OCD (I say I think because I didn't notice them at first and thought I was just twitchy lol), but a few months ago I started having tics with bigger movements although I haven't had many since then. I actually didn't know much about Tourette's until I started watching Let's Talk Tics' videos last year. I'm excited to see your perspectives on the topic!
ShalomAleichem Aww, thanks ShalomAleichem! :) Personally I think of Tourette's as OCD of the body, or OCD as Tourette's of the mind (at least for me). They are very similar in my opinion, and I think over 50% of people with Tourette's or a tic disorder have obsessive-compulsive symptoms (the opposite isn't true, but tic disorders occur in people with OCD at a rate higher than expected in the general population) - and they are certainly linked in my opinion! I would like to make a video about mental tics and tics that just happen in the mind, people don't say very much about these, but there is a bit more to TS than just making noises and movements :) When my squeaks started, I found it embarassing at first (because unlike grunts or other tics, it was the first tic I had which was very hard to hide!), and it was also tough for me at first to explain this to people who may have known me for a long time but had never realised I had tics. Now I'm less bothered :p Two years ago I would never have dared post a video showing my facial tics!
I like that analogy of "Tourette's as OCD of the body!" It definitely seems that way. And I had forgotten about mental tics! Definitely make a video about that! :) It's really great that you have the confidence to share those tics with others now! I think it will help more people with tic disorders to be less embarrassed! :)
+Squeak Code Honestly, I've never heard of this analogy before and therefore never thought about my Tourette's that way... but now you mention it, this connection/comparison between the two really makes sense. Never forget the general explanation from the video. So... thank you for doing this :)
My case is rare as my symptoms did not show themselves until I was 52, It has been diagnosed as Tourette's by a neurologist. It took me a year and half to find a job due to it. Thankfully I have an employer who is very nice and accepted me handicapped and all. I love my new job and am blessed to have it.
Thanks for your reply. Do you ever skype? It would be nice to talk with you sometime about getting tourettes so late in life..not very many of us around so when i do find one i like to network. anyway get back to me as son as you can starpainter27@gmail.com Chip
Around 30 years ago I lived opposite a man that had a daughter with tourettes and cerebal palsy. She was 16 years old at the time but he was an old man and I never knew what had happened to his wife. However I became involved with them because I owned a car and one time they needed to go somewhere and asked me to help them. I did so and we became friends with me taking them out on short trips etc. He told me that he was embarrassed by her and that previously they had not ventured out much. I realised that the stigma was more about how others see people than how we see ourselves. To cut the story short I used to spend time with her to enable him to go out by himself. She was good company and her torettes was the one where she repeated herself. Shetold me that she hated herself for it because it drew attention to her and she didn't want that (I assume due to her CP). Theymoved away and I never saw or heard from them again, which is a pity. He will most likely be dead now but I like to think that she is still alive and has had a decent life.
Your description of motor tics really rings a bell. I had those when I was a child, but they went away when I was about 10. I never went to see a specialist to check it out at the time, so I have no idea what that was.
I have tourettes my life is really messed up.. 😔😔 in my closed mouth i am talking myself and giving instructions and order to myself even i am thinking like a third person with myself. I am talking with my thoughts and re thinking same thoughts same plans and goals again and again and many more even i don't understand.. 😔😔
BOOM! My life. Ts sucks, but still it could be worse. The real problem is with everybody asking, "why do you do that" and having to explain your whole life story in about 1 sentence before you start to bore them. I just remember this one really annoying girl back in elementary school who was always fighting with me when she would tell me to stop and I would say I can't. She would always act like she was the one with the issue and complained how distracting it was for her. EXCUSE ME BUT HOW TF DO YOU THINK I FEEL TELLING ME ABOUT IT AND COMPLAINING ABOUT ALL DAY LONG WILL ONLY MAKE IT WORSE SO BACK UP BEFORE I DELIBERATELY START MAKING THEM LOUDER JUST TO ANNOY YOU ON PURPOSE!
Hi my daughter is 9 and has had a few different tics for the past 3 months or so.The doctor has said they are transient tics and he can't diagnose tourettes as it's to early. Her first one was eye rolling then it left and she started making a sort of throat clearing noise for about 6weeks then that left and she started blinking which she is still doing but is also sticking out her tongue.Kids are teasing her at school but she is coping well as she has nice friends who except her and understand. I have been online to look for ways to help her but it seems there is a lot more help and support in the U.S . I have thought about PANS/PANDAS but my doctor has not even heard of it. Is the doctor right in saying we just need to wait and observe for longer untill any treatment or diagnoses is given. I really thank all those like you that are sharing your experiences and helping people like me who just saw my child wake up one day and start giving.
Hi! creator here (albeit writing from my science account) If she has had a throat infection / you think it is PANDAS due to sudden onset, I would find a checklist online and print it off and bring it so the doctor can read about it, as it may be a case that antibiotics could do away with them. That being said, transient tics are common (up to 25% of children will have tics at some point, and in this case only time will tell if it is chronic tics or Tourette's syndrome) - that being said, as long as the tics don't bother her, as long as she doesn't feel that this means there is something wrong with her and that she has a supportive environment, those will be the most important elements regardless of whether the tics stay or go away. :)
Draw Curiosity Thankyou,I am trying to relax more and not worry so much.Thankyou for the advice I will print off some info and take with me to the doc.
RedStefan oh yeah... this was before I had a proper set up. xD The lapel Mic I used there records in mono (one ear only), and iMovie which is what I used to edit in doesn't show stereo waveform, so I never even realised until several days later when I listened with head phones.
