The DIY is why I have watched your channel from nearly the beginning. Just lean into it. As a matter of fact, I bought a boat to refit, and I am now rewatching some of the videos multiple times to see what you have done and what products you used over the years. I never rewatch lifestyle sailing channels; they're just too boring.
1000% agree with you on DIY vs cruising. In fact I stop watching channels when they're done building because quite honestly watching people cruise around is boring to me. Keep up the DIY stuff. It's what brings me back to watch and stay subscribed. Future boat build?? Can't wait to see what that might bring! You do good work.
Another tip for mold designing for forged composites. Split the "female" half into multiple parts. This will eliminate the need for an ejector pin and make demolding much easier. It does mean making the mold a little larger and incorporating holes to put bolts through in order to get it all to stay together, but it means less violence :). Easy composites actually just did a video a few days ago on this exact process (in fact, when i saw the thumbnail for this video I assumed that was an inspiration for this video)
Mas, we started watching you for the excellent DIY content and, though we love to see you enjoying the fruits of your long labor with your bride, we love the DIY content. I’m so (selfishly) happy my favorite sailing channels are all back in DIY mode (Ran, Uma, Odd, and the forever project that is Yaba)
I don’t care what anybody says. I loved it. This was just the exploration into nerdy problem-solving that I needed to hear. I applaud you, sir and I thank you for your wondrous content.
DIY is why I watch…you have skills….you have game! Your attention to details, descriptions, and the cinematography to tell the story are a talent! Keep it coming. We all miss Ava when she is gone. The onscreen chemistry and support is always positive! Your channel episodes are anticipated!
My guy, don't apologise for the DIY content. That is the reason I watch your channel in all honesty. Plus you guys seem super genuine, which is such a bonus.
I think DIY boat videos are great, it’s incredible the amount of things to do in that reduced space and how it all could be improved and upgrade. By the way there’s a channel called RTA Fabrication that shows extremely well how to do carbón forged parts and how it works all the release pins to extract the pieces from the molds
I vote for sewing project. I can't believe you guys have been cruising for THREE years! Time flies. I enjoy Ava's tours and history lessons but DIY is what interests me most.
I started watching Sail Life for the DYI. Now I watch it for you and Ava. I’m a Certified Prosthetist. We use PVA, carbon fibre, resins, basalt and all kinds of 3D printing. It’s fascinating to watch you fabricate and create so many things on Athena.
Mads, please be safe. Carbon fiber sanding and drilling requires the use of a mask to prevent it from lodging in your lungs. Also a vacuum would be a good idea to keep it from getting airborne and settling around the boat. Otherwise it can get in your lungs when air flow gets it airborne again.
I watch a few (3) sailing channels, only because they were building /rebuilding their boats. I have sailed since I was 15, now 62. I love boats, but I love a craftsman even more. This is the best of both worlds. Besides, I have loved Denmark since I was in Aalborg in 84 with the NATO fleet. Keep doing what you do, Mads, we're just along for the ride. 😃
I'm actually glad to hear you say you want to keep this a DIY channel, because to be honest 100% cruising channels get boring fast regardless of how hot the girls they have on it are.
Your channel started as a DIY boat channel & it was good as a DYI. While I imagine many of your followers thought that it would always stay a DYI build channel, it was great to see you realize your dream & finally get under way. The addition of Ava made a huge increase in content and balanced out you & your channel. There is no need to apologize for having an all DYI episode.
I missed the DIY. It’s all good! Of course I’m looking forward to Ava being back, not the least for her poor husband - that said, Mads is to boat DiY as Bob Ross is to painting 😅. This weeks video was great, thanks!
It's your DIY that attracts me to your channel. This one combining epoxy and 3D printing hit two of my fun categories! Sanding, on the other hand, is not one of my fun categories!
Mads, I love the DIY stuff too. its why i came to your channel. Don't get me wrong the cruising with you and Ava is great, but those seven years of you refitting Athena, were sublime
Mads, you started your channel back on August 18, 2013, doing DIY aboard Obelix, and I have been watching ever since. (Seems so long ago, doesn't it? Back when you had hair atop your head! 😂) And I, for one, have learned so much from your experiences that I'll be able to use on my boat's refit. Please, don't apologize for doing something you love, have become skilled at, and have been willing to share with us! I am grateful for all the time and effort you have spent in the repair/refit of both boats, and the documenting of it all to share with us. Looking forward with enthusiasm for what your future holds!
I like seeing a little bit of cruising stuff just for some context and views of beautiful places (particularly that beautiful water), but I'm here primarily for the boat-oriented DIY content.
You don't have to apologize. Your channel is amazing and I learned a lot from you (even though I have nothing to do with sailing). You are together and individually successful and I enjoy your content much more than watching someone sail and sail and sail and...
Its the DIY videos that keeps me interested. I miss AVA and her history lesions!! I always feel that I have learned something every time you folks come on...
Don't apologize for doing a lot of DIY, there are so many other channels that only do navigation.. the principle of your channel is the reason why we remain subscribed, .... ho glorious DIY :D
Your our favorite channel BECAUSE of your DIY. You have been such an important part of our journey to move onto our boat. Every Sunday we cant wait to see what we'll learn this week! Thank you, thank you, for your DIY.
We all have to keep our lives afloat but a sailboat (and somebody else doing the work) makes time with you and Eva an inspiration and an escape. You be you.
I agree with you the crusing vlogs, I much prefer a more diy laden vlog. I've actually stopped watching some creators when they finish projects and go out sailing full time. I'm so glad you've kept a great balance of both on your adventures. I also like that you guys don't "click bait " like so many others. No episodes of "WE'RE GOING TO LOSE THE BOAT." I've been watching since I believe episode 5 or 6, and it's always been great content and always entertaining. Who knew I'd learn to swear in Danish from an electronics expert. Lol. Sail on Athena and crew.
+1 for DIY content. I only watch DIY channels. I usually FF through cruising content. Just a data point for you. Your DIY content is really some of the best out there. Well presented and usually something potentially useful.
I follow a lot of sailing channels. Most of the time its because I like to see where they go. Though truth be told I like to see the challenges they face. I keep hearing that cruising is all about getting to fix your boat in exotic locations, and from what I have seen that is true. Though most of those exotic locations don't always have the exact parts or tools you need to do the job. It's fun to watch the various DIY, or McGuyver like, solutions they come up with. So there is no need to appoligize for you DIY heavy content that I'm sure is what keeps bringing a lot of us back.
I for one, enjoy and enjoy the DIY and repair content more than the sailing and sightseeing content. However i do enjoy all of your content. Stay safe!
DIY is the boss. Sailing is ok but I'm like you, I enjoy the diy. My son-in-law has a 3d printer. He has made parts for my boat. Never thought of making molds. Thanks for the video. You have opened a whole new avenue of diy parts making.
Great plans with the dingy! I've been considering something very similar. Rigid sailable, rowable and easily motorable dingy. Which fits into my dingy garage 😁 And DIY of course! 😅
I kid you not, I just watched, 4, DIY carbon fiber repair videos, this morning. For my prosthetic carbon fiber foot. Yours is the best! Just cut up the cloth, makes it much easier, than trying to use the cloth in layers, in tight corners.
I love the DIY stuff: i was worried the channel was gonna lose the DIY when you splashed Athena, but I'm super happy you keep DIYing. DIY, DIY. Did I mention DIY? Have a great week, see you next sunday!
Great video again! FYI, re printing, add perimeters for strength before infill. It'll be stronger and will print quicker as perimeters are printed in a smooth circuit like motion. For 100% infill for example, just add enough perimeters until you can see in Slic3r that it's 100% :) Also, put your parts closer together on the build plate. Will save print time with less extruder movement and will reduce cooling between each layer which will help with layer adhesion and therefore strength :)
Hi Mads love the idea of building your own tender. Looking forward to it. For 3D printed parts, people often use a spray filler primer. Not sure if that would work with carbon epoxy but it is very sandable and great at giving you a very smooth finish
Fun job. If you can get your hands on SLA resin and a UV flashlight, painting your PLA molds with thin layers of SLA. It will fill most of the layer lines right away and sands very nicely. Easy to get high gloss molds that way.
Though I am subscribed to several "Cruising" channels I always jump to your channel we you post a new Video. Good job, keep it up, and prayers are sent.
Glad to see a follow up to your 3D Printer purchase. Ever since you purchased yours I have been heavily looking into getting one for myself. I decided for a Bambu Lab printer (many reasons, but I am not limited on space, still living on land). Nonetheless, you mentioned smoothness via chemicals and/or sanding to achieve that. There was a video where a guy worked all sorts of methods to generate smoothness. Chemicals, would probably not work for you on a boat, and also, just in general, doesn't work anyway. Sanding adds a lot more time and still doesn't get it just right. He found a setting called Fuzzy Skin, generates a surface similar to what the Bed surface just happens to make to every print on one side, assuming it isn't a completely Flat heat bed surface. It adds more print time, but it creates a nice look and feel, totally hides the layer lines. But all in all, the additional time, is still less than the other methods plus its completely hands off, the printer does it for you. Look for "My Secret To No More 3D Printed Layer Lines by Jake Grim" Hopefully this is helpful to you. I am looking forward to more prints. You are a genius with DIY. I always learn something new.
Wow Mads. Your DIY videos are very good. You have a variety of skills, and your adding another skill, certify electrician. Wow mads. Your content has the right balance, some DIY, some going on hikes, some sailing. I enjoy your videos. Love the mold making the 3D printing etc.
Couldn't wait to see this weeks video on 3D print molds for carbon fibre, after the teaser from last week. Great video, I really enjoyed it and love this type of content! Can't wait to see the start of the dinghy design & build!
Cool diy projects. To fill the gap in the mold, you can use 2-component epoxy filler. And for the West system, there are special pumps for the epoxy and hardener. Then you don't have to use measuring cups.
Hi Mads. Looooooong time watcher and first time commenter (in fact, I haven't missed an episode since your refleks stove install on Obelix), and Mrs and I have loved the entire journey both DIY and sailing. Finally commenting today as I'm an avid 3D printer, if still hopeless with fusion360, and commenting with a small caution I might have missed you mentioning, so wanted to add. FLM printing unavoidably generates microplastics in the air. You'll probably first see them building up on the extruder cooling fan and may dismiss this as regular dust. Scale of use matters to the volume in the air (I've got 4 FLM printers), but you use the printer in your bedroom. Please try to ventilate during and after use (noting temperature stability matters) and hepa vacuum up any dust before going to sleep. Cheers! Oh p.s. the funky corner on one piece looks like the step up to the next layer. The cutter you are using to make gcode might have a setting to minimise the effect (pick sharpest corner or similar) but it depends on your infill - sometimes it just can't comply as it can't go back over itself without stepping up.
We are following you since you brought Athena from the UK! Absolutely no reason to apologize, just keep the DIY coming! Now, carbon fiber dinghy is a great project! Nothing less that we could expect from you. P. S.: remember the abandoned Amel Super Maramu you walked by in Trinidad and consider it as a good project but was not for sale? Well, YT channel Sailing Aquarius around the world bought it in need of the masts and they are selling it now. If you think you could find somehow two masts for that boat, is available and would make A PROJECT to say the least!!!
Your videos are great so keep them coming. We can all learn something from them. You haven't mentioned anything on an update on your Panda Genset recently, unless I have missed it. Cheers and be happy. Ian
DIY is why we started watching your show in the first place. And, fusion 360 is fun. Wish you would have shown the spool after printing the two big molds. Thanks 4 sharing 🙂
Never apologize for DIY stuff. It's what keeps me coming back... and back... and back...!
Meee toooo
Me too :)
No dyi equals no views from this subscriber.
Yep, same here.
can confirm
No need to apologize for the DIY content :). It's why we are here.
Exactly! Same!
I’ve always been here for the DIY content.
Same!
No need to apologize for the diy stuff, it is why i keep watching tour channel. Keep up the good work and …. Tak for en underholdene kanal.
The DIY is why I have watched your channel from nearly the beginning. Just lean into it. The Ava "see you!" at the end, made me miss Ava too. I'm not crying. You're crying.
I was cutting some onions. Making a lasagna... for one.
My anticipation to see you build a carbon fibre sailing dinghy could not be greater. I hope to follow in your footsteps.
I'm so looking forward to it. I've toyed with the idea myself, but I'm way to unorganized to ever pull it off.
Keep the DIY videos comming Mads, they are awsome, it is also the main reason for me following you the past 5 years.
Another tip for mold designing for forged composites. Split the "female" half into multiple parts. This will eliminate the need for an ejector pin and make demolding much easier. I love DIY stuff, don’t change anything 👍🏻
I don’t care what anybody says. I loved it. This was just the exploration into nerdy problem-solving that I needed to hear. I applaud you, sir and I thank you for your wondrous content.
Fun fact. Carbon fiber sanding dust is identical in structure to asbestos. Maybe wet sand and use a resperator if you like your lungs.
DIY is why I watch…you have skills….you have game! Your attention to details, descriptions, and the cinematography to tell the story are a talent! Keep it coming. We all miss Ava when she is gone. The onscreen chemistry and support is always positive! Your channel episodes are anticipated!

"Too much DIY" said no man ever.
I enjoy the DIY stuff very much. Lots of cruising videos, pertinent DIY is less so

Basalt? As in the stone? Interesting, how do you use it?
I just commented that earlier today, I watched ,4 carbon fiber repair videos, to repair my broken prosthetic foot.
@@dave7038 they melt the basalt and make a fibre from it. It comes in sheets and on rolls as a tube.
@@scotttaggart71 cool ! Amazing what you can find on UA-cam.
Your DIY projects are the reason I watch. Don't change a thing, and no reason to apologize.

The combo of sailing, yachts and DIY is fab. Keep it up.
Will be watching your dinghy build closely.
I’ve been wanting to build a light motor sailer for lake use.
Also your 3d printing is interesting.

You got me with DIY many years ago! Don’t change, I love the new format!
The DIY is my favorite part, and why I've been watching this channel for five years now
Making DIY videos is what you enjoy and watching DIY videos is what I enjoy. Sounds like a win to me.
I ENJOY VERY MUCH WATCHING YOUR DIYs !!! 🇨🇦
Don't apologize for doing a lot of DIY, there are so many other channels that only do navigation..

Thank you, thank you, for your DIY.
I concur the mold was a huge success. DIY is always a hit with me. It fits in with the "somewhat extesive refit"

no apologies necessary. I watch your channel because it's the DIY that makes the Dream possible ! KEEP IT UP!cheers
Guess how many of us like the same thing you do….and are looking forward to you starting a build/refit the new and bigger sailboat!

Dude! Your teasing us. DIY is your jam. Well plus the nifty retro and fun slangs and terms you recite. 😊
You like the DIY stuff you say? Well Mads, that's why I've been watching you for 10 years! So do I. 🤩
DIY is great. Full speed ahead with DIY projects.
As has been said already, much more invested in your project solutions. Oh glorious sanding forever!
This has been one of my favorite episodes!
If it is what you enjoy we can by how excited you get talking about projects or things your thinking of doing. But remember sailing is fun also.
I like watching your DIY videos, they're the reason I started watching in the first place!
I'm coming back over and over again for the diy part. I'm not much into cruising content, even though it can be a nice add-on

I love your channel it is the humor I love that you bring in to interesting subject and some time boring ones.
The DIY stuff is the reason we're here chief.
DIY is why we started watching your show in the first place. And, fusion 360 is fun. Wish you would have shown the spool after printing the two big molds. Thanks 4 sharing 🙂
