For those looking to buy one of these, I would make sure the kaowool seam lines up at the bottom of the forge as it was at the beginning of this video. This way if you develop any cracks in the satanite at the seam, the outer shell of the forge will still be protected by the fire brick. I ordered one myself, it is being delivered today. Thanks for the video.

FYI, I know this is old but the pre-cut hole for the burner tube doesn't allow for that kaowool configuration. I tried but you'd have a big hole in the wrong spot.

@@Loterbol if you rotate it correctly it will line up just like it was shipped. Just imagine it rotating 180 degrees at the hole instead of simply turning in in the forge to line it up.

Thanks again for a good piece of work, and that's a nice cartouche you've got made, there!

I recommend using more refractory on the floor, or make a sacrificial floor with more refractory, and ditching the hard brick. The chamber will heat faster, refractory dependent, and more evenly. The benefit of the hard brick is its durability and thermal density. The forge will use less gas once the brick stores all the heat it can handle.

what I learned from grumpy old men about building an ultra efficient forge: use 2" thick rigidized ceramic wool (very dangerous to handle always use a mask) then 1" high end refractory and finish with a ceramic coating. if you forge a lot it will save you lots of gas costs over time. material will heat up faster, temps will get higher, etc. they say you want 2" of open space around your billet (or whatever you're forging). you don't want too much open air space in the forge.

This isn’t a video about how to make the “best” or safest and most efficient forge. This video is to demo this exact forge, and help people assemble this particular inexpensive forge kit with the materials it provides. It’s under $100, of course it won’t be optimal in construction or efficiency, who would expect it to be? But it is functional and a great novice budget option.

if you don't mind I have a few questions.
1: can you melt metals in this, such as aluminum so you could do casting.
2: how much propane did this take, and how long did the piece of metal take to turn red hot. (just an estimate)
3 : If you used this after ward did it last or did it deteriorate after a short time.
if you could answer these questions that would be very helpful thanks.

question, what is the little thing with the yellow lever handle on top called? my forge did not come with one, is it something you need to buy separately? I can't get my forge to start and I'm assuming that it needs that :( any recommendations you have would be greatly appreciated

Take the whole thing into Home Depot or lowes and go to the gas fittings in the plumbing section and find a cut out valve that fits

look into hardy tools for your anvil along with tongs, various pliers. grab a ball peen hammer and a cross peen hammer for starting out. If you have an outdoor area to work you could make a box of dirt forge with coal or charcoal

All of what @@ludwigguy380 said. You'll save yourself a lot of money by learning to make your own tongs though. I also took a regular 2.5 lb sledge and rounded one side and flattened the other.

Nah. Just get some of the refractory mix and fill them in. Cracks are gonna happen. Just keep filling until it starts crumbling. And then it’s time to replace.

I bought 4 of these about 3 months ago. Just this last week I had 2 of the regulators fail. About 60-80hrs on each.
Still worth it in my opinion, but also good to buy and extra regulator as that seems to be the weakest point.

You should have some extra left over, right? if you get those cracks just fill them in with the leftover refractory, and cure again. Sorry though, probably a bit late on the answer xD

Great video! I am a bit concerned by the position of your thumb when you are hammering. Please, let the hammer bounce back by positioning your thumb on the side of the hammer. Your articulation will thank you in a few years. To be honest, I saw you doing it only in the first pass of hammering.

There are relatively cheap and affordable anvils at Harbor Frieght if you need something ASAP. But honestly a big flat piece of metal will work fine until you find a better anvil! But yes! An affordable 50-150 pound anvil would be fantastic.

Just so you know as of September 2023 or before, the quality of the propane regulator and hose has gone from braided stainless hose with flare fittings to a cheap rubber hose with barb fittings and hose clamps with cheap plastic screw tabs. Going to test with soapy water EVERY time before using it.

Forge doesn't look so good to me, too easy to damage. Looks too shallow for the width. The first forge I ever built was way better, more solid, and usable. Cost me about $10 for perlite and plaster of paris. It's built like a coffee can forge., but over 2x larger.
