- 1971 - Shirley Bassey recorded this wonderful song titled, 'I Don't Know How To Love Him' in 1971, which was one year after it was written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice for the musical, "Jesus Christ Superstar". Weather sung as part of the musical or as a love song, this is a great piece of musical writing by young Webber & Rice team. Shirley Bassey's rendition is beautifully sung. This track was included on Shirley's 1971 LP titled, 'And I Love You So'.
ABOUT the LP, And I Love You So:
And I Love You So is a 1972 album by Shirley Bassey. Released late in 1972 to positive reviews, this was Bassey's fourth album of the decade and was one of the albums which comprised her 'comeback' period of the 1970s. Unlike the earlier albums, this didn't feature any hit singles and consequently didn't fare as well as the previous three. It made No.24, and remained on the chart for 9 weeks, reaching its peak on Christmas week, resulting in higher than average sales. Singles released were "And I Love You So" (a cover of the Don McLean hit) and "The Ballad of the Sad Young Men", although the CD liner notes considers tracks "If We Only Have Love" and "The Way of Love" to be stronger single choices. The title track did however become a UK top three hit some months later for Perry Como.
The original release was in stereo on vinyl and cassette. This album was re-issued on CD in 2000 with two bonus tracks: "If I Should Love Again" (previously only released as a B-side to "The Ballad of the Sad Young Men") and "Let Me Be the One", which was unreleased until 1994. The album was re-released again in a double pack with previous album I Capricorn in November 2010.

Shirleys voice is a musical instrument . Very very rare . I only recognise three others in my experience .
The first time I heard this song I thought "how in the world did nobody fix that clumsy 'in very many ways' lyric to read 'in oh so many ways'?". Obviously someone picked up on it pretty quickly since Sassy Bassey waxed it the right way in '71. Oh and this song - regardless of the singer - has one of THE GREAT middle eights ever.

Dame Shirley Bassey will turn 84 yo this Friday, January 8th. She just released a new album in November. Her voice has aged like fine wine. This classical POP vocalist still has one of the finest voices in the business, in my humble opinion. See her recording of 'Adagio'. The last few notes will bring chills down you spine! Yes, her pitch has changed over the last 7 decades, which is expected for someone in their 80's, but her amazing abilities to hit incredible high fidelity notes as well as soothing lower notes is still there!

Yvonne Elliman's original will always be my favorite. but until I heard this, I always thought that Helen Reddy's cover was the solid number 2. Now I'm not o sure. This is as hauntingly beautiful as Yvonne's . Thank you.
Shirley Bassey is certainly one of the great VOICEs of the last half century, and no matter what she sings, she is hard to beat. I also enjoy all other versions of this song as it's a classic, in my humble opinion.

What a great singer! Her rendition is different. It's a studio recording, not a Broadway dramatic piece. Two different styles. There's no better studio recording. Elaine Page's is certainly also special. What's not to like about any of those? No existing performance highlights better vocal quality combined with control than Shirley Bassey's. IMO.
