- 1991 Dame Shirley Bassey recorded this wonderful song, 'The Power of Love' and released it on her 1991 LP titled, 'Keep The Music Playing'. Shirley's beautiful lower register intonation along with her high register vibrato is exceptional as always. Dame Shirley has made a wonderful 63 year (and counting) career for herself singing covers, of course along with her own hits, and this recording is no exception. She was in her mid-50's when she recording this album, thus bringing to the table a more mature vocal recording for avid music lovers. This song was a hit for Jennifer Rush in the 1984 and then it was another hit for Celine Dion in 1993.
ABOUT the song, The Power of Love:
"The Power of Love" is a song co-written and originally recorded by Jennifer Rush in 1984. It has been covered by several artists, most notably by Celine Dion, Laura Branigan, Helene Fischer, and Air Supply. Rush's original version went to number one in the United Kingdom in 1985 and became the biggest-selling single of the year in that country. It was also a number one single in several other European countries, as well as Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Dion's version went to number one in the United States, Canada and Australia in 1994. The song has been translated into several languages, becoming a pop standard.
The Shadows did an instrumental cover on their 1986 album, Moonlight Shadows. Other male artists who have recorded the English version of the song include David Alexander, Michael Crawford, Engelbert Humperdinck and Andrea Bocelli, who recorded it for his second studio album Bocelli (1995). In addition to Jennifer Rush, Laura Branigan and Celine Dion, other female artists who have recorded the English version of the song include Shirley Bassey, Mary Duff and Nana Mouskouri. A Hi-NRG version credited to Beverly reached number sixteen in Australia in March 1994; this version and that by Celine Dion coexisted in the Australian top fifty chart for thirteen weeks. Fits of Gloom featuring Lizzy Mack released a dance version of "The Power of Love" which reached number forty-nine on the UK Singles Chart in November 1994.
ABOUT the LP, Keep The Music Playing:
Keep the Music Playing is a 1991 album by Shirley Bassey. The album was recorded in the UK at the Westgreen Studios and in the Netherlands at Wisseloord Studios, Hilversum. The album is a mixture of contemporary pop ballads, such as "I Want to Know What Love Is" from Foreigner, the Jennifer Rush power ballad "The Power Of Love", and the more gentle "Still" from Lionel Richie, combined with standards from the field of jazz and pop, such as "He Was Beautiful", the sweet jazz ballad from Cleo Laine. Several of the songs are sung with a grand, operatic pop style, which may have roots in her 1984 album I Am What I Am, which she recorded with the London Symphony Orchestra, and the fact that in the latter mid-1980s she started working with a vocal coach, a former opera singer. Bassey returned to the Beatles with "Yesterday", as she had previously covered "Something" and "Fool on the Hill" successfully in the 1970s, and had performed "Hey Jude" frequently live. Another previously successful formula was used for the closing track "Dio, Come Ti Amo (Oh God How Much I Love You)" an Italian original in the tradition of "This is My Life" and "Natalie". ("Dio, Come Ti Amo" was the Italian entry for the Eurovision Song Contest in 1966, performed in Italian by Domenico Modugno). The album was a commercial success and entered the UK album charts in May 1991, peaking at number 25

Of course this is good. Shirley always was but I never felt that she gave of her best in a recording studio; it was like she was singing with her arms tied down! In a packed auditorium, in one of her amazing dresses and an orchestra behind her, she would have nailed you to your seats with this song!.
