That carrier is not designed for that caliber or pistol gas system. The bolt if fine. The can track timing is different, designed to increase dwell time in a 14.5 in internal piston barrel. Use standard carrier.

From what I understand, 1) definitely not for a piston ar platform (if that was what you were trying to say) and 2) it is to increase dwell time, in short barrels as well. I agree, I don't think it is needed for a 300 blackout rifle, and could be a problem... but would be sweet in any other sbr as dwell time is an issue in a mk18 ect... If I am mistaken, please let me know.

The LMT "Enhanced" BCG was solicited by Crane and engineered by LMT to address parts breakage/reliability issues on a very specific platform-a military M4 with a 14.5 in. barrel and Carbine length gas system; the further you stray from that platform, the more chances you take that it will be a detriment to reliability rather than an enhancement. While the bolt is just generally strengthened and stress relieved in ways which should provide increased durability in any AR-15 platform (occasional spring replacements notwithstanding-they are wear parts after all), the carrier is another matter. LMT altered the cam path in a way which optimizes timing for that M4 Carbine, and the change is not universally compatible. The Navy didn't even end up buying these EBCGs because they didn't work in rifle-length M16s. I have no idea if it's a good choice for a .300 AAC with a pistol-length gas system, but it seems like without a lot of data to support that use case, you're just rolling the dice.

My understanding is that the e-bcg was failing in the rifle length intermittently and only under automatic fire. I've been running this in a suppressed Daniel Defense 9" 300BLK pistol gas setup. It runs flawless and noticeably reduces the emitted gas coming back towards me. I probably wouldn't have picked it up if I wasn't running a suppressor with a fixed gas system due to the price.
That's not true at all. All it does is relieve stress on the 2 lugs that sit next to the extractor. watch the video. And if that was the case why did LMT sell it in this configuration? Clearly stated at the beginning of the video it was a LMT factory built gun.

The enhanced BOLT is designed to relieve stress on the lugs, but the enhanced bolt carrier also differs from a milspec design, and in a way that is not helpful for all gas systems. As I said in my initial comment, the enhanced bolt should be compatible with most 5.56mm ARs, and provides some additional durability, but the enhanced bolt carrier group is only an "enhancement" in certain specific configurations.

New Zealand had issues with the LMT rifles they purchased. To their credit LMT corrected the issues but that shouldn’t have happened in the first place. Especially for what they charge.

I have one of the LMT ebcg's and it runs flawlessly. But I am using it with a 14.5" with a carbine length gas system. Works both suppressed and non, without an adjustable gas block. I just throw an H2 buffer in it with the can on. Runs like a champ.
Cool! That's what EBCG was made for, a 14.5 or 16 inch 5.56 with a carbine gas system. The delayed unlocking and faster pressure release in a 300aac probably just created issues that won't exist in the first place.
I think I've seen less grunge on a truck axel then there was in that LMT carrier. Apparently the owner doesn't yet know of the importance of cleaning after use.
I don't think its necessary to clean an AR-15 after every use, you didn't explicitly say this but it was implied, I think a cleaning every 500 rounds is more than sufficient. But yeah that BCG was disgusting, mine doesn't look like that even after 500ish rounds. Perhaps suppressor use here?
@@toki89666 Yes, cleaning any gas driven system after use, be it an AR, or gas operated shotgun is a must if one is to prevent corrosion of the metal, or Carbon lock. after use simply field strip the gun, flood with Gun-Scrubber, scrub area's with stiff "Nylon" brushes (no steel) re-wet then blow out with compressed air, takes all of 5-minutes. Apply a quality "Gun" specific lubricant such as Ez-Zox (*no WD-40, it's a water displacing agent that is designed to dry over time*) and allow to cool to room temp before placing into a Sack-Up silicone treated gun sock and storing in the safe. As the saying goes, "An once of prevention saves a pound of cure"... ^_^
I shot with LMT guys all the time. In a 40 mile circle where I used to live we had. Bunch of companies LMT/ ARMALITE/ ROCK RIVER/ SPRINGFIELD/ LES BAER/. LMT would bring a Box Truck full of rifles and run ALL OF THEM! It was a hoot!

I'm going to forgive you for giving away one of my closely held sources, Pacific Tool and Gauge, lol! While watching some of the SOTAR Bolt & BCG inspection videos, I saw these videos, part 1 & 2 on the LMT enhanced Bolt (2) & Carrier, followed through by checking the headspace on the .300 Blackout Barrel. I really appreciate the thoroughness of your instructional video here as I have a LMT MRP Upper w/ 10.5" Barrel in 5.56x45, I'm using this for a build project with an LMT Defender lower Receiver & I have 2 Complete LMT enhanced Carriers w/ enhanced BCG's. I'm signed up for back in Stock notifications with a few Companies for the 14.5" LMT MRP Barrel w/ Carbine length gas tube. As this is the set up I want to run and I believe the 14.5" barrel with the enhanced Bolt & Carrier should offer the durability, reliability, longevity & hopefully accuracy I'm hoping to achieve w/ this build project. I'm likely not going to use the 10.5" Barrel but will use a XM-177 style flash hider/moderator pinned & welded for NFA compliance, since I have a couple in my Shop. But I was writing this comment on the headspace checks that you did on the .300 Blk. Barrel, I planned on headspacing the Barrels before final assembly & test firing. I have a set of go, no go & field gauges but I was very impressed by your design and set of go, no go & field gauges. In your video on Why do we gauge so much, you stated that you started making these for people who were in your classes and at the request of friends & others who had seen them and mentioned that you would be selling them. I have checked the School of the American Rifle website and as yet haven't seen these headspace gauges available. Will they be offered through the SOTAR website in products or is this set something you do as a custom order? The modification of base's of the headspacing gauges was sheer brilliance exercised through experience & into physical form, well done. I noticed in the comments one from the Gentleman from smallarmssolutions which was a good tech answer, I thought. Their channel has an excellent video "The Buffer - Theory & when to use what Buffer. I found it really interesting, having worked at Colt and being well versed with the exhaustive testing @ Colt for the AR platform, he's in the video said he has a thick tech sheets folder regarding the results of testing of buffers at Colt and provides a really detailed and cautionary breakdown of the various weights & types, when, and for various gas systems, barrel lengths, weather condition effects ect. I would recommend the video for others such as myself who believe safety to be a critical part of a build project. Just have to say I'd prefer watching these types of gunsmithing, technical videos to the Golden Globes or Academy Awards any night of the week! lol! I guess I am a bit of a firearms geek as charged. If you're having failures, it's better to get the rifle in the conditions it is failing in. Sure, rifle being dirty may be the issue, but an AR should be able to go several thousand rounds between cleanings with no loss of reliability.

Question for you Chad, I didn't see you check for throat erosion on this 300BO barrel??? That was going to be my guess right next to head space issues. Myself I've had nothing but head space issues with multiple AR 300blk uppers. Enough so that I've given up on the round in a AR-15. But love it in my Ruger American bolt rifle. Subscribed. And while i definitely appreciate the in-depth educational value of your content, you are also going a long way in making me feel better about not spending the money on a DD or LMT.
The biggest take away from him I’ve got is that it’s not about what brand is best or whatever it is but you HAVE to do your due diligence in checking your own products once assembled and make sure it works. I have seen everything from the low end brands pass with flying colors and even the “Best” brands fail horribly. You have a sample of 1 and it could be good or bad but you won’t know until you check. This is why he will not make a recommendation to buy a specific brand bc he has seen them all fail to some extent.
I think an explanation of the field gage and No-go gages should be explained. I will try to simplify; go-gage means the barrel headspace is with-in tolerance, No-go gage means it out of tolerance but if it closes on , it will still fire but needs to go to a gun smith for repair. Field gages were designed for the military to allow for extra tolerances of acceptable wear in combat but there is a danger of case separation and case damage. Brass life will definitely be shortened if firing a field gaged fail rifle.
Closing on a go gauge does not mean headspace is in tolerance, it just tells you it's not too tight to function. It could be way to big which is why you also need to test with a no go gauge.
My theory is that filling the NZ army contract, UK defense force contract and a few others, have put too much strain on their production line. They've probably had to hire a lot of new employees quickly to keep up, and as such their quality has suffered.
chad, can you also check BCG tail concentricity, as in the area where it interfaces with the LAW tactical extension? I had zero malfunction issues but the rear left of the BCG was striking the VLtor buffer tube at the interface point until it wore in. when i check the BCG tail for concentricity it was actually very roughly machined, and visibly off center. Pissed for how much money I spent, i have many other BCGs and even palmetto state has better machining/finish/QC. not to mention the right side of my gas key is staked much harder than the left.
I have an odd issue with one of my 300 black outs. it’s hard to duplicate it’s not consistent either sometimes when I load a round it will misfire. When I try immediate action I usually have to mortar the round out usually there is no indent on the primer when this happens. Mostly happens when I’m working lots of reload drills. Is it possible that the neck of the cartridge is hitting the feed ramps and causing it to jamb itself and get stuck? Roscoe barrel.
Is this bolt a good idea for a 12.5 middy? I don’t mind spending on the most important parts of the rifle as long as it is an improvement over the standard
throat should be in very good condition seeing as that barrel never fed more than half a mag through it without a fail to feed. The RMA department had it more hours than I did. I was using the exact ammo they told me they were using. hornady 110vmax and 208amax
@@pigeon2041 i bought 2 premium bcg from PSA...one has a thicker ring than the other...so made me think one is a real premium, and the other is a fake premium ....hehehe
If you shoot steel (or bimetal jackets), you can scrape fragments of steel off the ammo. If your bolt etc is magnetic, those fragments stick to the magnetized parts and can jam things up or just slow things down enough to cause issues. Those little fragments will also cause excessive and uneven wear on parts over time, which also causes reliability issues.
How can you tell if your LMT BCG is a real LMT? Bought one on GB and staking is poor. Bolt is marked MP and DH in the opposite direction than the one in this video. Plastic box only says L7D3.
Out of curiosity..do you guys use any kind of solvents or cleaning solutions in your parts washer?...it might sound like a dumb question but I’ve always wondered what others use. Honestly, when it comes to firearms I don’t think there is such a thing as a dumb question.
I would’ve been embarrassed to send in my gun or parts to you not completely clean. It always baffles me how and why people don’t clean their guns after shooting them. You drop at minimum $2,000 for a decent rifle like Daniel Defense upwards to $3,500 for a Knights or Heckler and Koch, it takes no more than 30 minutes to clean a rifle to the point it almost sparkles. 🤦🏽♂️
Not everyone has space for a legit cleaning setup with a compressor etc... it's good enough to push a rag through until nothing or very little comes off
Love the video and knowledge, but the carbon build-up and sheer filth of the bcg have my sgt voices screaming in my head. I have to clean a gun now to make me feel better.
From my understanding, the heavier the buffer, the more resistance behind the BCG. Therefore, an over-gassed rifle will be less violent, but less reliable with a heavier weight buffer. An under-gassed rifle will have short stroking issues with a buffer that's too heavy. It's easy to think of it as a continuum: Heavy buffer=less recoil, more risk of short-stroke failures. Light buffer=more recoil from higher carrier velocity, this can cause parts failures prematurely. What I do is load one cheap steel round into a mag and fire it. Then I increase the buffer weight until the rifle will fail to lock open on a steel .223 rem round. Does that make sense? Once you fire a properly tuned gas-system you won't go back!!

Here’s a question I have been struggling with and welcome anyone to chime in (especially those with hands-on experience with both). Is the Geissele RE-BCG $185.00 better than a BCM FDE BCG?
No. The BCM is phosphate coated on the outside, and chrome-lined on the bolt bore. It will handle gas better over time than the Geissele which is "nano" coated. Which probably just means DLC. Which is a fine enough coating, but the chrome lining in the bolt bore will retain dimension amd gas efficiency better.
the bolt had 2-3 mags stuttered through it before its first trip to LMT due to cases sticking and failing to eject, pretty sure i was shooting Fiocchi ammo. Went at least 5000rds of Federal AE 5.56 on a suppressed 10.5 fine before I then dropped in a .300blk barrel and every case I could find stuck. I tested it with 5.56 again to see what was up and this time all I had was PRVI, cases kept sticking, sent it to lmt, they changed the ejector spring like the first time. I doubt I put another 200rds on it before sending it to Chad because I was seeing the exact same issues I had seen a year earlier. Round counts are approximate given its been a year since some of these events happened.

New Zealand rifles had a batch of incorrectly hardened firing pins and a few cracked, not aware of any issues besides that.

It's the carrier, meant for 14.5 carbines, not black out ir pistol cartridges. The user needs to change the carrier.

In your video on Why do we gauge so much, you stated that you started making these for people who were in your classes and at the request of friends & others who had seen them and mentioned that you would be selling them.
I have checked the School of the American Rifle website and as yet haven't seen these headspace gauges available.
Will they be offered through the SOTAR website in products or is this set something you do as a custom order?
I would really like to purchase a set for the 5.56x45 but would also be interested in versions for the .300 Blk. , 6mm ARC , for AR platform build's. I would definitely be interested in a set in .308 Winchester perhaps other Cartridges if you expand your offerings. The modification of base's of the headspacing gauges was sheer brilliance exercised through experience & into physical form, well done.
I'm definitely interested in the set of bolt tail gauges, the taper pin gauges are of interest as well.
I noticed in the comments one from the Gentleman from smallarmssolutions which was a good tech answer, I thought.
Their channel has an excellent video "The Buffer - Theory & when to use what Buffer.
I found it really interesting, having worked at Colt and being well versed with the exhaustive testing @ Colt for the AR platform, he's in the video said he has a thick tech sheets folder regarding the results of testing of buffers at Colt and provides a really detailed and cautionary breakdown of the various weights & types, when, and for various gas systems, barrel lengths, weather condition effects ect. I would recommend the video for others such as myself who believe safety to be a critical part of a build project.
Just have to say I'd prefer watching these types of gunsmithing, technical videos to the Golden Globes or Academy Awards any night of the week! lol! I guess I am a bit of a firearms geek as charged.
Anyway thanks again sincerely for the giving us all a better understanding of the AR platform, it's internal operating systems and functions.
I believe it is vital for people considering the popularity of the Rifle to be familiar with it's internal operating systems, components, tolerances and what's compatible & safe when making changes or alterations and what's not.
As I mentioned I'm seeking reliability, durability, longevity and accuracy as well as safety and compatibility of parts when building these Rifles for myself, and there's far too many people who claim expertise & experience with firearms making video tutorials, how to videos ect. It's important to separate the "Wheat from the chaff."
I think the School of the American Rifle and the information you so thoroughly provide is one of the absolute best resources for working on the AR platform & firearms in the Country.

If you're having failures, it's better to get the rifle in the conditions it is failing in.
Sure, rifle being dirty may be the issue, but an AR should be able to go several thousand rounds between cleanings with no loss of reliability.

Question for you Chad, I didn't see you check for throat erosion on this 300BO barrel??? That was going to be my guess right next to head space issues. Myself I've had nothing but head space issues with multiple AR 300blk uppers. Enough so that I've given up on the round in a AR-15. But love it in my Ruger American bolt rifle. The biggest take away from him I’ve got is that it’s not about what brand is best or whatever it is but you HAVE to do your due diligence in checking your own products once assembled and make sure it works. I have seen everything from the low end brands pass with flying colors and even the “Best” brands fail horribly. You have a sample of 1 and it could be good or bad but you won’t know until you check. This is why he will not make a recommendation to buy a specific brand bc he has seen them all fail to some extent.

I think an explanation of the field gage and No-go gages should be explained. I will try to simplify; go-gage means the barrel headspace is with-in tolerance, No-go gage means it out of tolerance but if it closes on , it will still fire but needs to go to a gun smith for repair. Field gages were designed for the military to allow for extra tolerances of acceptable wear in combat but there is a danger of case separation and case damage. Brass life will definitely be shortened if firing a field gaged fail rifle.
Closing on a go gauge does not mean headspace is in tolerance, it just tells you it's not too tight to function. It could be way to big which is why you also need to test with a no go gauge.
My theory is that filling the NZ army contract, UK defense force contract and a few others, have put too much strain on their production line. They've probably had to hire a lot of new employees quickly to keep up, and as such their quality has suffered.
LMT did those feed ramps? Or are you saying the customer polished the ramps himself?
Just a heads up. Don’t close your calipers all the way and store them. Leave them open slightly. You will over time notice they spread away.
I kept them open about .200 stored and in the case. The videos just don't caprure those things.

So it was the wear, right? So it is good for a manufacturer to go on the upper side of the tolerance so the component can wear and still be in spec?

chad, can you also check BCG tail concentricity, as in the area where it interfaces with the LAW tactical extension? I had zero malfunction issues but the rear left of the BCG was striking the VLtor buffer tube at the interface point until it wore in. when i check the BCG tail for concentricity it was actually very roughly machined, and visibly off center. Pissed for how much money I spent, i have many other BCGs and even palmetto state has better machining/finish/QC. not to mention the right side of my gas key is staked much harder than the left.
Maybe it would run if the owner cleaned it?

I have an odd issue with one of my 300 black outs. it’s hard to duplicate it’s not consistent either sometimes when I load a round it will misfire. When I try immediate action I usually have to mortar the round out usually there is no indent on the primer when this happens. Mostly happens when I’m working lots of reload drills. Is it possible that the neck of the cartridge is hitting the feed ramps and causing it to jamb itself and get stuck? Roscoe barrel.

throat should be in very good condition seeing as that barrel never fed more than half a mag through it without a fail to feed. The RMA department had it more hours than I did. I was using the exact ammo they told me they were using. hornady 110vmax and 208amax

No, that's the interior chrome lining weeping out from when they were coating the inside.

For those who shoot steel case ammo, any magnetism is detrimental
If you shoot steel (or bimetal jackets), you can scrape fragments of steel off the ammo. If your bolt etc is magnetic, those fragments stick to the magnetized parts and can jam things up or just slow things down enough to cause issues. Those little fragments will also cause excessive and uneven wear on parts over time, which also causes reliability issues.

I would’ve been embarrassed to send in my gun or parts to you not completely clean. It always baffles me how and why people don’t clean their guns after shooting them. You drop at minimum $2,000 for a decent rifle like Daniel Defense upwards to $3,500 for a Knights or Heckler and Koch, it takes no more than 30 minutes to clean a rifle to the point it almost sparkles. 🤦🏽♂️

Unrelated topic but quick question. What is the is the issue with having “too heavy of a buffer”
From my understanding, the heavier the buffer, the more resistance behind the BCG. Therefore, an over-gassed rifle will be less violent, but less reliable with a heavier weight buffer. An under-gassed rifle will have short stroking issues with a buffer that's too heavy.
It's easy to think of it as a continuum:
Heavy buffer=less recoil, more risk of short-stroke failures.
Light buffer=more recoil from higher carrier velocity, this can cause parts failures prematurely.
What I do is load one cheap steel round into a mag and fire it. Then I increase the buffer weight until the rifle will fail to lock open on a steel .223 rem round. Does that make sense? Once you fire a properly tuned gas-system you won't go back!!

Here’s a question I have been struggling with and welcome anyone to chime in (especially those with hands-on experience with both). Is the Geissele RE-BCG $185.00 better than a BCM FDE BCG?
No. The BCM is phosphate coated on the outside, and chrome-lined on the bolt bore. It will handle gas better over time than the Geissele which is "nano" coated. Which probably just means DLC. Which is a fine enough coating, but the chrome lining in the bolt bore will retain dimension amd gas efficiency better.

Any idea how many rounds on the bolt with weak springs?
the bolt had 2-3 mags stuttered through it before its first trip to LMT due to cases sticking and failing to eject, pretty sure i was shooting Fiocchi ammo. Went at least 5000rds of Federal AE 5.56 on a suppressed 10.5 fine before I then dropped in a .300blk barrel and every case I could find stuck. I tested it with 5.56 again to see what was up and this time all I had was PRVI, cases kept sticking, sent it to lmt, they changed the ejector spring like the first time. I doubt I put another 200rds on it before sending it to Chad because I was seeing the exact same issues I had seen a year earlier.
Round counts are approximate given its been a year since some of these events happened.
I run this BCG in 11.5 suppressed sbr.
