@@hYBRYDcOBRA While we may be sentimental about various aircraft, that is not how airlines work. Airlines are all about how they can make the most profit out of each aircraft, given the distance they need to fly and how many passengers they can carry. 747 simply became less profitable to operate compared to newer aircraft such as 777 and 787. Since United has fiduciary responsibility to its shareholders to be as profitable as possible, it simply could no longer fly 747. Other airlines have also stopped or will stop flying 747 for passenger flights. But some airlines are still flying 747 for cargo flights. The reason being that 747 has greater cargo-carrying capacity than many other aircraft and that can be more important if the amount of cargo that needs to be transported in one flight cannot be done in other aircraft. BTW, Boeing developed newer versions of 747 that are much less costly to operate than the older versions. So it is not true that the 747s became outdated. Boeing has newer and very modern versions of 747 that have the latest technologies. The problem is that, for passenger flights, those newer versions were simply too big for the routes that the airlines currently fly. It is for this same reason that Airbus 380 failed in the marketplace. Airlines now want aircraft that are smaller than 747, even for long-haul international flights, which they get with aircraft like 777 and 787. But there are cargo airlines that have bought the latest 747, so those new models will be flying for many more years to come. Sadly, though, Boeing has announced that it will not make any more 747s after they complete the current production of the cargo 747s. The cargo airline market is just too small to sustain the 747 production.
