I have 2 of these budget Ryobi 18v trimmers. I bought them on sale about 6 years ago in kits with blowers. Although I have much more powerful, and expensive, 18v and 40v Ryobi trimmers, this is still my go to trimmer for most tasks because it is super light weight and compact. It is the only trimmer my wife will use as she finds my other trimmers too heavy and too powerful. This small budget trimmer gets the job done and might be the perfect fit for many people. Although I always wind my empty spools from bulk string, in appreciation of your video, I used your Amazon link to the replacement spools and bought a set of 6. Great deal and convenient to have extra spools ready to go.

@@Kitearmy Update: Today, I received my Amazon order of replacement spools that I ordered from your link. I was able to compare the replacement spool(s) and line to my original spool with bulk line. Ran a full 3.0 Ah battery on both a replacement spool and the original spool with bulk line, so felt that was a good real life performance comparison. No difference as far as I could tell. Great value on this replacement set and at 1/5 the cost of the Ryobi replacement set at Home Depot. Thanks for the review and links.

For the last 18 months I've not let the lawn crew edge or use a weed eater in my back yard. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkx_rBCFuDW1zD6blTGhLkvAkxU657uR_lG I didn't like the fact that they just kept cutting the edge of the lawn further and further from the rock lining the flower beds and leaving bare ground. And the grass was trimmed or scalped several feet around trees, etc. It was a constant battle with them so I told them to just mow and no trimming. I have Zoysia grass so it grows pretty slow. Obviously after a while it could use some trimming. I'm in my 80's so I can't do much of it myself. Finally I decided that if I could find a lightweight battery powered trimmer I might be able to do some light trimming. I decided to buy the LST201 20V trimmer. And it works great for my needs. I have back yard with about 150' of flower beds and several trees to be trimmed. I can lightly trim the whole yard with a single charge! The grass I trimmed was only a few inches high but the trimmer was more powerful than I expected.

I bought the 4 pound Ryobi today. This is the "Best" trimmer. Very fast, easy to use, light weight, razor trim for string attached to the string cover and lime green which is one of my favorite colors. You don't break into a sweat and you get the trimming done. We have had one of these for around 6 or 7 years now. We are on our second one. We wore out the first one. It is the go to yard tool for my wife. She doesn’t like any of my bigger more powerful trimmers that have more features.
This is a great little trimmer! It’s feather light, a perfect size for my wife, and just flat out works and works well. We have worn out a couple of stringer caps so I keep a couple of spares on hand. I have purchased the replacement string cartridges and I have also purchased the bulk string spool. I am split on which I like more. I have used both.
Until I purchased the cordless 21 inch Ryobi lawn mower, my wife would use this string trimmer to cut the lawn instead of the corded electric lawn mower we had. (Since I purchased the cordless lawn mower, I won’t be going Bach to gas or corded electric. Even now, she will grab this trimmer and cut small grass areas instead of using the lawn mower.
    I like this trimmer too.
This trimmer is a perfect example of a trimmer that is right sized, properly shaped, and has just the combination of features. It’s well balanced, the handles are the right size, shape and in the right place. It does just fine with the single speed.
    This is 👍👍☑️

Thanks for reviewing this and giving tips! 👍👍 I have had one of these for 4-5 years now, I love how light-weight it is (and, REALLY, how HARD do people need to go on a trimmer for their homes sitting on a half-acre or less, lol).
The auto-feed quickly becomes unwieldy (like, within 1-2 seasons it started feeding, like, an entire FOOT of string). I finally had enough, and just now replaced the auto-feed spring (...courtesy of a pen my brother gave me lol, maybe i should get a proper replacement spring and the plastic piece...).
Anyways, the cap's tabs are wearing out from me manipulating it so much, and having extra loaded spools around would be nice, so thank you for the link 👍👍🤙🤙

Trying to ditch mixing gas and oil with my current old stihl gas trimmer plus it’s heavy and doesn’t run as well as before. So I’m thinking bout a battery trimmer with a decent powerful electric motor with performance.

I purchased one of these trimmers last week. Andrew, the commentator for this You Tube video is correct. The instructions provided are worthless. The print is too small not detailed. I had a problem fitting the upper and lower end pieces together. I could not get these two pieces to go together flush. I asked my neighbor to try and he could not push them flush. I had to loosen the screws in the lower end to have the upper end to fit snug together. Once the two pieces fit snug, I then tighten the loose screws in the lower end.
Just finished trimming the grass and I am satisfied with the trimmers operation.

    BE ADVISED-
I discovered a weird little idiosyncrasy with this trimmer. As I
was using my new trimmer after some time the string stopped
feeding out. The feed button was free but when I gunned it
from a stop I no longer heard the string WHACK the cut off
knife after it had fed a little.
    FINALLY-
What had happened was the battery was running down & no longer
had the poop to accelerate the spool fast enough to shoot out
a little line. When I put in a fresh 4Ah it began to shoot out the line
once again. I love my new trimmer. The trashman took my old
    RY253SS away today.

Problem is, I cannot dissemble the shaft (long handle) I squeeded the tabs tried to pull it back out, cant do it. The directions said that once you assemble the shaft correctly, YOU CANNOT pull it back out I guess it latches on internally. Soooo, How do I get it back in the box to return it to Home Depot? I contacted Ryobi via their support online thing, and no one got back to me. Is there a way to disassemble the shaft? Please answer asap as I want to return this I didn't use it just like I said assembled it.

Good info on the price of the spool,I always buy string in bulk and wind it,so I’m not buying those spools. One more piece of info if I may,I have other trimmers, for heavy trimming and all of them rotate opposite of this trimmer, another words it rotates clockwise, all my other trimmers rotate counterclockwise, what’s the difference? It cuts with the rear of rotation, while the other trimmers cut with the front of the spool due to counter wise rotation.therefore you can’t see what you’re trimming.

Great video thanks. I've had mine for a few years now and have loved it as it's so light as I have only one arm. However just recently it's been acting up. It'll stop as if it has no line but when I open it, it has plenty. Upon closer inspection it appears like the line is stuck within the spool. So I'll empty it and rewind from scratch but nothing seems to help no matter how many times I respool it. So now it's very anoying as it stops within a few minutes as if it's empty. Not sure why the line gets stuck in between each other within the spool. Is it just time for a replacement? Any ideas anybody?

Need to re-feed line about every 4 feet. ( Not exaggerating!!) Then half the time the line goes all the way back into spool under the cap. Tried other .065 line and it did not feed at all. Marked difference in Ryobi .065 diameter to other brand of same diameter. Returning it.

hi so i just purchased this same trimmer and the issue i am having is the automatic feed. i replaced the string but it keeps releasing the feed and getting caught in the motor. any suggestions?

  • @MrErpman

What you have to do is let it slow down until your hear a click and that's when the line is fed. You don't have to let it stop.

It doesn't seem like it's very powerful. Is that because it's got a little battery? Just asking? Cause I don't know anything about these. And I need a new one. Because I have a bigger one and I don't know how to get the bottom off of it to refeed the line through it. And won't go through the hole to the other side. And I don't know how to take the bottom off. Maybe you can help me with that, please somebody. My husband passed away last year and I have no idea what I'm doing. Anybody's help would surely appreciate it.

You know you COULD boar the hole which the sting comes out of on the head of the spoil or however you say that but the part that the sting comes of you just drill it a we lil bigger & then BAMWOW just LIKE that YOU just made YOUR once 0.65 string trimmer into A NEWER IMPROVED 0.95 LINE STRING TRIMMER!!! IT's MUCH BETTER MUCH MUCH BETTER! (YOU WILL 100% VOID ALL WARRANTY/S IMMEDIATELY AFTER you make MAGIC BAMWOW MAGIC) but that would be YOUR PERSONAL DECISION NOT ANYONE ELSE! I can't lie I had/still have this particular model string trimmer it wasn't to bad ONCE I got the lithium+HP 9Ah 18V batteries for it but I got my use outta that trimmer I literally burned it's little motor out until it just didn't go no more although I put it through a LOT more then I had ever imagined possible the hole unit which houses the string/cartridge of string you cut with got so hot it melted itself off the lower half of the entire tool aka the part it is supposed to be lol fun still CAN'T belive that the thing STILL WORKED even after that I had to pound the sting holder back onto the tool & there was NO more auto advancing sting (IT LITERALLY MELTED the spring & plastic slider that WITH THE SPRING WOULD ALLOW THE AUTO STRING FEED TO OCCUR) I'd 100% recommend it for someone with VERY MINIMAL WORKLOADS or someone who just can't have a loud 2cycle motor string trimmer or some small front/back yard grass touchup or even just for doing the edging around the cement or fence line or treeline areas. With that being said if you're still here for some reason I UPGRADED my STRING TRIMMER to a NEW 25cc 2-STROKE GAS-MOTOR IT'S been a lot more adequate getting the job done although for around +2-X $ (two times more money) 100% worth ever cent INHO (IN MY HONEST OPINION)

i have this weed whacker and it's a few years old, so it has the older battery charging base but i love this thing. we also have a heavy-duty gas powered whacker and i prefer this lightweight electric one over it. i also bought an extra battery and base to switch out bc it only lasts about 20 min. but still. i love it. and i just buy a spool of line and restring it myself. only need to get the pre-wound ones when the cartridge breaks or something.
