Hey Jon, I watched your videos from your time on the Ranger Lake Loop prior to my trip. It gave me some good insight on what to expect. We didn't bother trying to drive to Gong. We were in a minivan and didn't want to risk getting stuck like you did. The Nush was a bit rougher and shallower than the Aub but worth checking out. It's definitely a route I'd like to paddle again but maybe ice out next time. Thanks for watching!
@@AleconAdventures Ice out is a hard call up there, Especially if you are from somewhere else. Even with cell service. Check with Ranger Lake Lodge for ice conditions.
It is Ranger Lake Resort and not "Lodge" owned by Kevin and Joella, hope I spelt her name correctly lol.. just met her as we went and checked out the property I just bought next to the resort. Looking forward to a lot of time there for sure!
Back in my day there was no GOPRO to record a trip like this, you just brought your 35mm camera. And while watching your video it brought back memories of the days when i did canoe trips. And i did a lot of them in the Algoma Area. And i was glad to see on one of your portages you did have a spare paddle :) Thanks for the post of Ranger Lake Canoe trip. It was a pleasure to watch!
There is something to be said of doing a trip with no camera at all, and having the memory just for yourself and the others who did the trip with you. At times, a camera does take away from the experience. On the other hand, it has been so great to be able to share detailed accounts of our adventures with family, friends and now all of you. Our grandparents especially enjoy the videos, and that alone makes it worth it. The Ranger Lake loop was great, I'm glad you enjoyed watching it. Thank you!
Wow, what a trip. I loved this. I identify with your uncle Doug. I'm 71 now and remember vividly trips in Algonquin Park, Ontario with my son. We always got 'conservation' licenses, just catch and release. I was more worried about attracting bears than eating fish. "You promised me more fish than bugbites!". Love it. Every adventure starts when things stop going as planned.
Glad you enjoyed it. I always try to clean any fish before I get to camp but conservation is always a good idea. Dealing with adversity on backcountry trips definitely makes for good memories. Thanks for watching!

It was a beautiful area with lots of big white pines towering above the tree canopy. It was very tough going upstream on the Nushatogaini River and the lower than normal water levels didn't help. It's always great to explore new areas and routes. Thanks for watching!

Oh wow! I was even wishing we could have gone earlier in the spring with higher water but we couldn't due to covid. That must have been tough in the late summer. I love seeing photos and videos of places I've been on trip to relive those good memories. Thanks for watching!

Hey Jp, I was trolling deeper like you mentioned but on Megisan Lake we were catching Lake Trout at all depths. Doug was flat lining a spoon and catching them. Thanks for watching!
Looking at this loop for solo September 2022, what maps are you using? Can I ask why you decided on 10 days? I am looking at doing it in 5. Any advice?
It's a great loop! I used Gaia GPS to make my own maps. Ten days was a good amount of time moving every day with extra time for fishing and filming. I wouldn't want to do this loop in less than 8 days. If you started at Gong Lake (which involves driving rough logging roads) and paddled up the Aubinadong River all the way to Megisan Lake before returning the way you came, you could do that in 5 days. Travel on the Nushatogaini River is tough as this is the wildest and least maintained part of the route. Thanks for watching!
@@AleconAdventures I paddled the Aubinadong in 2018 with a buddy, we (he) brought a chainsaw and 5 L of gas (portaging this extra weight was not always welcome!) and cut/maintained many of the portages and freed up some of the log jams. It was a week of very hard work ending in a huge rainstorm where we could actually see the river level rising by the minute. So much so that there was a frog sitting on a log in out fire pit! We got some amazing video of the water coming off the valley walls and shooting 10 feet into the main stream. All night we could hear boulders and trees coming down the valley because of the erosion caused by the rain.
@@AleconAdventures so, 2 years after first wanting to do this trip, I am finally going this May. So far reports are going to be low water. Hoping to put in on Gong, guess depends on road conditions.

How deep were you trolling? I like 20-30 ft down for lakers in the summer. Sometimes i mark them deeper but i dont seem to catch them deeper.
