Alien definitely still holds up today. A dynamic mix of characters and an amazing creature, especially for 1979. Fantastic cinematography all around. Some of the style elements are rooted in when it was made, but I loved how textured and functional the environments are.
Aliens was actually the first of the movies that I saw and again has fantastic cinematography. Hadley's Hope is understandably industrial so it had a different style to the first movie but still had that tactile and functional quality. The reason that both of the first movies are so beloved is partly due to how different they are but don't contract each other's content.
I actually love Alien 3. I also thought it had a terrific sense of style. Even though the others had great casts, I enjoyed this group the best. A hostile environment for Ripley but she still forges alliances. (Spoilers) One thing that this movie was criticised for was killing off Hicks and Newt. Even though Michael Biehn was such a strong leading man, I think Ripley had to be the core of the franchise. The shot you showed with Ripley and the Alien inches from her face is iconic. Although there was a couple of shots that weren't great, I also liked the Alien 'Runner' design to add something new
Aliens 4 was okay. It had some nice elements with Ripley 8 being a Hybrid and reconnecting with her humanity, The scene with Ripley 7 and the Newborn's death still haunt me.
Predators 1 & 2 are some of my favourite movies of all time. 1 will always be iconic but I never understood why 2 got the hate it did. It has a fresh setting, different and original characters. It adds to the lore without breaking anything in the same way that Alien and Aliens coexist.
AVP was a let-down. Sanaa Lathan was actually a competent lead but was surrounded by dull characters. The Predators were too bulky and immobile rather than agile. Bigger is not better when it came to their physicality or their weapons. I liked the concept of the Grid Alien, it made them more than just drones in a hive, it showed that they could have some sense of individuality.
Requiem. It could have been improved by less of the whiny 90210 / Dawson's Creek nonsense.
Prometheus. A good Sc-fi flick but should not have been part of the Alien universe. Although the first 3 added Aliens to the franchise, they began to diverge from what made the Alien's Alien.
Covenant. They somehow made a bad movie with 2 Michael Fassbenders.
I will probably go see Romulus but am slightly concerned about the younger average age of the cast.
As I said before Aliens was the first of the franchise I ever saw. I'm a much bigger sci-fi fan than my older brother but it's thanks to him that I had access to movies like this, Dune, Psycho, Escape from New York and more that stirred my love of movies. Even though the Alien movies have strong horror elements I've always seen them as sci-fi first. I love special effects and both genres have a fantastic relationship with practical effects. I've always watched stuff about horror but have only recently begun to watch what I would call pure horror more recently

Sigourney Weaver is fantastic as Warrant Officer Lt. Ellen L. Ripley. 😀👍👽

I've missed some of the franchise, and really should re-watch them all... I know I liked the first two a LOT and I think part of why I stopped watching was probably because I doubted any could be that good again. Knowing me I'll give them all a watch around the time this newest one hits streaming.
