This has been a great compilation. Most of them were made before I joined your channel. I keep pointing out that I've only recently got into horror and although I have expanded my experience of the horror genre, I haven't watched any of the Friday the 13th series yet. Because I love sci-fi and special effect features, I ended up watching a lot of stuff about horror but had little desire to watch the movies themselves. Even though I've seen a lot of special effects features and scene breakdowns, actually getting around to watching the movies is still fresh. It adds a whole new context to what I have seen before rather than just feeling that I've seen it all before. As I was typing this I almost said 'thinking' and although we do analyse movies afterwards, we watch them because we want to feel something.

The first four Friday the 13th films are probably the best. It gets a bit strange after that, though. Sometimes, the later sequels in a long running horror franchise are more silly/fun than anything else. Now to dive into Puppet Master III.....of which there are like 13 I think, which I hear after part 4 they kind of fall apart.

I've never heard of this movie but it was probably more specific to the US in terms of airing. I can definitely see where you are coming. Cheesy and dated at times but it had ambition to tell an engaging and wholesome story. Hunt for the Red October is an awesome movie and I listened to the Audiobook of it about 3 years ago.

I rather liked Fly II. Eric Stoltz and Daphne Zuniga had great chemistry together (even if Stoltz is technically playing a five year old). And we realize that Seth had a VERY good reason to avoid Bartok Industries! Lee Richardson makes a VERY good bad guy - always did, really - and I will say that Bartok got what he deserved. I thought that Chris Walas did a very good job with his first directorial effort. Even if you can make the special effects guy into a director but you can't take the special effects guy OUT of the director! I remember the Behind the Scenes video on the blu ray release that Walas spent more time dissecting the special effects than he did on his direction! Still, he clearly learned his lessons well from David Cronenberg, and came out with a very good film. And the special effects - no freaking CGI! - were fantastic. I never saw it as gore for gore's sake - it DID have its place. Still, what they did to the doggie....

My assumption was always that this film took place a month or so later, not 9 months and that the son's growth rate started while in the womb so she couldn't have an abortion because it was already too late

Can't believe it has been 10 years. I saw Robocop 2 first and It's my favourite. I totally get why people love the original but for me, 2 I love the Drug angle especially when it was used as method of controlling RoboKain. I also liked the the character of Hob in that movie. Anyway, there were some decent aspects to this movie but it just didn't hit the mark. I don't think it was a total disaster, just low energy. I agree that it did have some great characters and did try to do something different and more modern with the context of the story.

Although not familiar with this movie I have seen a lot of older TV movies. While they could be hit or miss, I think most movies were trying to make something with purpose, to be enjoyed or to show the talent of the Actors, writers and production group. With streaming, some of the content is very hollow, simply to fill schedules and time. While the camera quality may not hold up, I think the acting and storytelling can.

I think a first-time viewer might be wise to check it out at home first. Mainly, because one of the last times I went to see it at a movie theater, the audience was yelling out their responses so continually that I really couldn't hear the movie at all. By then I pretty much knew all the dialogue by heart (having watched it around 50 times lol) so I already knew what was going on, but a newbie might be totally lost.

This 70s cult classic has a killer soundtrack and I personally also loved the early 80s follow-up 'Shock Treatment', which was way ahead of its time with whole 2000s reality TV obsession era while influencing movies like The Truman Show :-)

I've missed some of the franchise, and really should re-watch them all... Knowing me I'll give them all a watch around the time this newest one hits streaming.

Alien definitely still holds up today. A dynamic mix of characters and an amazing creature, especially for 1979. Fantastic cinematography all around. Some of the style elements are rooted in when it was made, but I loved how textured and functional the environments are. Aliens was actually the first of the movies that I saw and again has fantastic cinematography. Hadley's Hope is understandably industrial so it had a different style to the first movie but still had that tactile and functional quality. The reason that both of the first movies are so beloved is partly due to how different they are but don't contract each other's content. I actually love Alien 3. I also thought it had a terrific sense of style. Even though the others had great casts, I enjoyed this group the best. A hostile environment for Ripley but she still forges alliances. (Spoilers) One thing that this movie was criticised for was killing off Hicks and Newt. Even though Michael Biehn was such a strong leading man, I think Ripley had to be the core of the franchise. The shot you showed with Ripley and the Alien inches from her face is iconic. Although there was a couple of shots that weren't great, I also liked the Alien 'Runner' design to add something new Aliens 4 was okay. It had some nice elements with Ripley 8 being a Hybrid and reconnecting with her humanity, The scene with Ripley 7 and the Newborn's death still haunt me. Predators 1 & 2 are some of my favourite movies of all time. 1 will always be iconic but I never understood why 2 got the hate it did. It has a fresh setting, different and original characters. It adds to the lore without breaking anything in the same way that Alien and Aliens coexist. AVP was a let-down. Sanaa Lathan was actually a competent lead but was surrounded by dull characters. The Predators were too bulky and immobile rather than agile. Bigger is not better when it came to their physicality or their weapons. I liked the concept of the Grid Alien, it made them more than just drones in a hive, it showed that they could have some sense of individuality. Requiem. It could have been improved by less of the whiny 90210 / Dawson's Creek nonsense. Prometheus. A good Sc-fi flick but should not have been part of the Alien universe. Although the first 3 added Aliens to the franchise, they began to diverge from what made the Alien's Alien. Covenant. They somehow made a bad movie with 2 Michael Fassbenders. I will probably go see Romulus but am slightly concerned about the younger average age of the cast. As I said before Aliens was the first of the franchise I ever saw. I'm a much bigger sci-fi fan than my older brother but it's thanks to him that I had access to movies like this, Dune, Psycho, Escape from New York and more that stirred my love of movies. Even though the Alien movies have strong horror elements I've always seen them as sci-fi first. I love special effects and both genres have a fantastic relationship with practical effects. I've always watched stuff about horror but have only recently begun to watch what I would call pure horror more recently

As I said before, I'm glad you're continuing with this series but I definitely see why you took a step back so that you could choose projects. The Elvira Collection was built for riffing so it's important to balance out movies with more relevance. While some of these movies may feel like they have little value, these movies may have been an early lifeline for individuals within the movie industry and skillsets to support the industry as a whole.

Dark City is my absolute favorite film of all time. The Director’s cut, which omits the spoilers given in voiceovers at the beginning, letting us to learn what is happening during the course of the film, is better than the original theatrical release, IMHO.

Same here. I saw the theatrical version in the theater, then some years later got the DVD with the Director’s cut. About the only thing that I thought the theatrical version did better was to dub the voice during the few seconds in which the character Emma is singing in a bar. But that is a very minor bit of the overall film.

This was one weird movie, and I did have to watch it a couple of times to really understand what's happening. Watching it more recently, I found myself thinking of two comparisons. I don't want to give out any spoilers either, but I was reminded of Frederik Pohl's Tunnel Under the World (adapted a couple of times on the radio series X Minus One) and the 1997 Spanish film Abre Los Ojos (Open Your Eyes in English) starring Penelope Cruz -- which was utterly screwed up in the American adaptation Vanilla Sky with Tom Cruise. You'll pardon me, but I've never been that impressed with Tom Cruise, and I thought he was terrible and utterly unbelievable in the American version.

    • @CaturdayNite
      @CaturdayNite Місяць тому

@kali3665 i may have to check those out. Especially since Vanilla Sky didn't really do much for me. Don't get me wrong, I like some of Tom Cruise's work (some, not all) but the movie just kind of came and went and was forgettable...like Eyes Wide Shut. I feel like this one and Event Horizon deserved more, though Event Horizon seems to have finally found an audience after all these years. The 90s really had some films which reached out to try something new, but sometimes they failed miserably while others seem to have not caught on until years later. Even The Last Action Hero tanked back then and found an audience in recent years. It was as if the meta/4th wall breaking/action hero parody didnt really take....many wanted a regular Arnold movie.

Even though I love Sci-fi, the trailer never gripped me enough to try and see it. It had a solid cast, looked great, intriguing monster and a nice setting. These people felt like astronauts in that just outside the walls was a harsh environment that could kill them just as easily as the alien.

I haven't heard of this movie let alone seen it. From what you've shown and said, this looks to have some really nice cinematography, doesn't take itself too seriously but at the same time takes the actual filmmaking side seriously. Meta movies like this can be engaging because they do add something different to the mix. Sometimes it works for the viewer and sometimes it doesn't. Some CG can be done really well but when worlds are so based in reality rather than being dinosaurs or space ships, it needs to be used subtly and sparingly. I certainly have no issues giving older videos a second chance when they didn't find traction the first time. What might have been interesting or perhaps even useful for you would be to rewrite the review even if you don't actually redo it. See what has changed with your writing style.

@jamesabernethy7896 i did that a few months back with Jakob's Wife. It dis about the same, but was more obscure of a film. There are only a few old ones which really nevwr went anywhere

I remember this iteration of TPOTO and liking it well enough, but the 1925 & Hammer versions are my favorite- this one was more Jack the Ripper meets The Phantom.

I haven't seen this movie. I'm in two minds as to whether they were genuinely trying to put an alternative spin on the story elements or if they were just using Robert Englund's name as a draw and the story was secondary. From what you've shown me it might even be a bit of both. The poster clearly capitalises on Englund but the movie has a good look to it. Maybe they tried something unique and it just didn't work.

pearl is still the best in the trilogy in my eyes and its not even close. Its such a good character study.

I haven't seen this movie so it's so hard to judge if this movie still has relevance. I don't mean that in a bad way, films are relevant because they are there to be enjoyed. What I mean is that is this a movie of it's time, can people relate to it now. I'm from the UK so I'm not sure how this was received at the time. Was it a distillation of Americana that people felt was a world away, even at the time.

Even though these movies are essentially made back to back, it's interesting to know which one to watch first. The movies will give different contexts to each other... but is context more invigorating than intrigue.

@BarrySams yeah, I was expecting horror the first time I think, and slightly light...like The Burbs. But this ine definitely went more thriller and much darker.

Great video with a great subject. Although I am familiar with Pee-Wee Herman, I haven't seen this movie. This if from a time where the name of an Actor or Director had so much pull regardless of the plot or tone of the movie. I would happily watch Batman today and although very comic-booky, the camp was toned down. Despite the tone of the movie Jack Nicholson's Joker put chills down your spine. Beetlejuice is not one that I have gone back to re-watch but I remember feeling at the time it was more than an enjoyable movie but an actual movie and cultural experience. This is the movie that everyone asked you if you had seen it.

The very fact that a movie is a "Tim Burton Film" plays a large part in my decision to watch it.

I keep seeing this and everytime I do, I consider watching it. I get the feeling it will be something I would actually like, yet keep putting it off for some reason. Saw your video suggested to me and thought I'd see what you had to say. LoL Perhaps I'll finally stop delaying and finally dig some fangs into this show...ya know...see what the taste be like. HeH 😉

@altSHIFTNerd thats how I was. For a while I was like: "Ugh, I don't CARE! I have What We Do In The Shadows abd too many other shows!" I was glad I gave it that 3 episode try. Definitely one to, for the most part, not take too seriously. Lots of cheesiness with that comedy, but they quickly and easily worked in more serious aspects. Also...Lebron James shows up, which was unexpected.....yes, really... 😉

@@CaturdayNite LoL Well, 3 episode try is around my usual...2-3. Though, for me, I had to give Game of Thrones a 3 season try (prior to season 7's release), before I actually got into it and started caring. Strange how we can respond to some shows/movies, at times. HeH

@altSHIFTNerd i had such a hard time with GoT. And I always had to pay attention to the opening credits to remind myself who was who and from where. And, like Lost, since I watched it all within 6 months, I had no issue with the ending. But I can imagine so many people who watched it over the better part of a decade had issues.

@@CaturdayNite I hear ya. I had issues with the last season from episode 4 onward. The writers and creators of the adaptation into the HBO series, D and D, admitted that they rushed it because they didn't know what to do with supernatural characters and events and wanted to just leave and move on to Star Wars, which they were taken off of shortly after being available for that. HAHAHA Anyway...not attempting to discuss GOT again. Thanks for your thoughts on the Reginald show and I look forward to further videos from ya (I subscribed to you). 😃

I never watched this show but there was something in the way you described deciding to watch it that reminded me of The series iZombie. I saw it advertised and watched it only so I could legitimately say how crap it was. I fell in love with the show. It has flaws but the characters were so fun and there were great stories.
