And I only bring this up because Tony himself brought the topic up so it’s fair game In my opinion. Apparently housing discrimination does not exist and had no effect on the black community. I can listen to him talk wrestling but when he speaks on non wrestling issues it is some of the most ignorant stuff you will ever hear.

      @@jaredgarrison333 When you say this, I think of one James Cornette. He has a lot of knowledge about wrestling, yet ask Corny about anything not related to wrestling, and quite often, he sounds like a moron. Cornette doesn't even have much common sense. Cornette is the same person who never thought to carry packaged food or make himself a sandwich on the road, which led to the infamous fast food store incident where he berated an underpaid fast food worker. I've had people in food service make mistakes, and I just smile and tell them it's okay, just fix the error, I'll wait another ten minutes, because I know I'm fortunate to even be in a position to _have_ food.
      Many fans think that this wrestler or that wrestler is smart, just because he or she understands the business. Well, a plumber knows all about plumbing, he or she understands the business, yet you wouldn't ask him or her to perform open heart surgery. Knowing a particular industry does not necessarily make one extremely intelligent. This is all the reason why I can't stand modern wrestling - too much, too fast, everything is a highspot and finishers mean nothing. I loved the days when a body slam meant something, now it means nothing. Every other wrestler has that greasy, stringy, wet looking hair, it is all the same crap over and over again

    • @zlinedavid
      @zlinedavid Рік тому +9

      The concept of a finisher is dead. If Austin hit a stunner, unless he was physically restrained from pinning the guy, you knew it was over. WM15 wasn’t a great show, but it did have one extremely memorable moment: it was the first time anyone kicked out of a Stunner. That’s something you save for the main event of your premier show of the year. Now it happens 3-4 times a match.

    Jesse Ventura used to get a lot of heat during the first five minutes of a match doing nothing but complaining, stepping over the middle rope with one foot and telling the ref to have the face back off, and rolling out of the ring. Like Tony implied near the end of this clip, you can do far less in a match and generate far more interest by taking your time, working an arm or leg, and doing maybe two or three high spots including the finish. Most of the other older wrestlers say the same thing.

    • @markv1274
      @markv1274 Рік тому

      That's an excellent example. The reason why it works is because fans have paid their money to see wrestling, and the time being wasted by the heel is real. Stalling is one of the few things in wrestling that is a shoot, time is real, you can't fake wasting the time of the fans. It makes fans legitimately agitated, so even without cheating, the heel can get the fans to boo him or her. Malia Hosaka still pulls on the tights occasionally, she's very good at this kind of thing. She stalls, complains to the ref, argues with fans, and it works. That's because she's old school and gets it. Nowadays, so many wrestlers want to get all their stuff in within the first five minutes of the match. After that, where do you go?

    Part of it is that everybody bumps and nobody sells. It used to be back in the day the babyface would sell and sell, then fire up and the heel would bump. To be fair, wrestling in the early 2000s was no better. In fact, I was telling people back in the Attitude Era that the Attitude Era would be the last hurrah for wrestling. Turned out that I was right. A lot of casual viewers who had watched since the '80s stopped watching, or came back for a little while and then stop watching again. Many viewers at the time only started watching during the Attitude Era, then disappeared quickly because wrestling was no longer "cool"--bandwagon jumpers.
      Let's face it, once an unruly employee beats up his employer (a multimillionaire, no less) and gets away with it countless times, where do you go? Why doesn't _every_ wrestler show a flagrant disrespect for the owner of the company? When an octogenarian gives birth to a hand, that's no long sports entertainment, that's sci-fi horror. Who's going to watch this crap?
      Remember, the late '90s and early 2000s had Edge, Christian and the Hardys with their tables, ladders and chairs bullshit. You had the Hell In A Cell matches, with Mick Foley on a seemingly never ending quest to cripple himself--or worse, leave his children without a father. One big bump should end the match, but uh-uh, not if you're Mick Foley or one of the Hardys. So, even back then, it was either turning into a garbage festival or already was one.

    Piledrivers, Superplexes, DDT's, Neckbreakers, etc. are nothing more then transitional moves but that school boy roll up i beat you with put you in ER.
    During my time in the business the average match was like watching most Popeye cartoon episodes. Each and everytime Bluto does something to get over with Olive Oyl, Popeye one ups him.
    Eventually Bluto gets so frustraded, flustered, whatever and beats the Shiznit out of Popeye and is ready to take Olive Oyl as his prize. Popeye someway somehow opens up that can of Spinach and makes the huge face comeback on Bluto and that leads to the finish.
    Fast forward the face or heel or should we say " Character " climbs up to section ZK of the Upper Mezzanine and attempts a Plancha on his opponent. Whether the Plancha is hit or not it's usually not the finish but that devastating school boy roll up is.🤕🤪

    the spot tony talks about the 10-count punch to a guy while standing on the turnbuckle was routine in 80s wwf. it was the first clue to about 8 year old me that it was a work. just like tony said, how could hulk hogan who's 300lbs with the biggest "biceps in the world" not knock a guy out, leave him bloody, break the bone or even leave a mark on a heel after drilling him in the face 10 times.... but of course by that time they probably weren't too concerned with keeping kayfabe anymore

    • @markv1274
      @markv1274 Рік тому

      Vince Junior never "exposed" the business, he just told people what they already knew. It was _where_ and _why_ he said it that made the difference, he didn't want wrestling to be under the same regulations as regular sports. Yet people generally knew that wrestling was a work. Don't believe me? Here's a clip from the '80s show HARDCASTLE AND MCCORMICK (ua-cam.com/video/bUJr0CkBEQs/v-deo.html). The two wrestlers call spots in the match. So, the notion of wrestlers cooperating obviously wasn't a secret at that point. This was a few years before Vince Junior stated to the court that wrestling was not a sport as such. Some years earlier, on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean, THE BENNY HILL SHOW did a similar thing, they had a sketch where two wrestlers discussed amusing details of their personal lives whilst working a match. The general public had known for years.

People running million dollar wrestling companies just can't seem to figure this out. I don't want to see a baby face and a heel playing grab ass after they just supposedly went to "War".
