Pablo Escobar was a Colombian drug lord lol. His life was dramatized in the show “Narcos.”
The point is that he had next to nothing to do with anything despite his name somehow ending up in the marketing. I think he might be able to sue them if he wasn't wanted for numerous international crimes.

There's a good reason the Alienstock guy was worried about having an event in the desert, because he saw what could happen if it wasn't done properly.
Yeah Fyre I guess was a necessary evil in how not to market.
As it was cause of that festival that the Alienstock dude changed course and he absolutely made the right decision there.

In the foods defense the local restaurant never got paid and where closed for the season. They were doing the bare minimum to keep people from starving lol

I’ve come around to influencer culture. It makes picking out the stupid people a lot easier. If someone is obsessed with celebrities, brand names or social media, you can assume they are inconsequential and not worthy of your time.

I don't know about that, I feel like there are more people into influencers than you would think. Otherwise, we wouldn't have as many relatively successful influencers as we unfortunately do.

I mostly dislike the word influencer because it sounds pretentious af and most "influencers" should be focused on entertaining people aka being entertainers and not on influencing people. I always feel like it is a peak behind the curtain when someone calls themselves an influencer.

When I was a teenager, the musician, Alice Cooper, said something during an interview. He said that if you gave anyone famous, whether they were a sports star, movie actor or actress, or musician, any creditbility, you were being stupid. None of them deserve your time of day outside of the entertainment they provide.
To this day, I've kept that in my mind.

Internet historian touch on it briefly, but basically every time he would run out of money Billy would literally fly back to New York in order to get "small" loans of 2-3 million dollars just to keep things barely afloat. Even worse in the documents for the investors he told them the festival had offer reports worth of 35 million when in reality it was just 1 million and even told they had a fund in case the festival was cancelled.
"Maybe she didn't know what she was signing up for", yeah that is kind of the problem with 'influencers'. They have no accountability, they throw around their 'influencer' with wanton disregard for the people that trust them. They should have a legal level of accountability to verify that what they are peddling isn't harmful and what they say is true, but that is easier said than done when we have politicians who were born before the invention of the chocolate chip cookie and that think the internet is just a fad among kids.
I think at some point they did have an actual private island for the event that was formerly owned by Pablo Escobar, but the dude that currently owned it told them not to make any mention of Pablo in their advertising. They did and so he refused to let them use his island, forcing to come up with the alternative of the gravel beach at that other island.
For context: Pablo Escobar was one of the most infamous drug lords to have ever lived, essentially building an empire on the massive amount of drugs he sold and becoming nearly synonymous with the Colombian cocaine trade. At one point, he was one of the wealthiest people in the world, and flagrantly indulged in all manner of illegal and immoral vices with the knowledge that he could bribe or threaten anyone who tried to stop him. Recounting his life now would take far too much time, but some of his most famous ventures include:
* Essentially founded the Colombian cocaine trade
* Openly murdered competitors, politicians, judges, and police officers that tried to get in his way
* May have bombed at least two airplanes
* Ran for the Colombian parliament and won
* Smuggled hippos into his personal compound, accidentally turning them into an invasive species
Dude was a big deal, and remains fairly popular for some people in Colombia because he'd use his money to help some of the locals, even decades after his death in 1993.
Been involved with a few functions involving upwards of a thousand people and even I was thinking, you kinda need something like 15k to make something like that profitable, you have to have a backup fund in case of major failures like that "storm", you have staff wages, venue hire, food, it's transport and storage, amenities, permits... it really goes on and on, and that's for a function just being sold for 150k, let alone something that is on an remote island... my animal brain shrieks at trying to cost that.
So that Mother's Day thing at the beginning made me panic like crazy. I already forget what day it is constantly, and don't remember what day Mother's Day is, so I just got super scared that I missed one of the few days a year I'm basically obligated to call my mom.

Just yesterday I was seeing someone on a gaming youtube's channel comments giving the youtuber thanks because his mentions of both loving boxing related media and boxing practice made them get into boxing in the pastmdecade and that changed their life.
That's some big influence from something that never sponsored them.

Hope many big festivals or every kind of Festivals are learning a lot from Fyre Festivals and also following the Alienstock, Las Vegas 2019 to prevent Fyre Incidents.
One detail I haven't seen mentioned in years was a dude working as an orignizer getting desperate trying to make sure no one died by offering to suck someone's dick in exchange for water. The water got caught up in some legal stuff where I think it had to be looked over first or something. The organizer was just desperate to help but the guys let the water through because they felt sorry for the dude.
It's been a very long time since I heard about this but I'm 90% sure it was confirmed in an interview.

Internet Historian had a small update on Billy in the second part of his Tales From TheVarus series, documenting all the stupidity that was going on in the world due to covid.
As for the Fyre Festival 2. It's because Billy McFarland might be out of prison but he still owes a lot to a lot of people.
So he is hoping he can do it right this time and make back what he owes others.
I'm not holding my breath though. Even if he plans it right this time, he isn't going to get enough people to make it profitable. Once you get painted as a fraud, it's hard to earn back people's trust.
Always (I say 'always', I've been watching like 3 weeks lmao) found you to be down to earth and have a lot of common sense, but this vid especially you were hitting every nail on the head with every word.

Welcome back once again Lila! For context, Pablo Escobar was a massive drug lord, the leader of the Medellín Cartel, and a narcoterrorist operating around the mid-70s. As bad of a man as he was, the story is fascinating and I wholly recommend watching the Netflix series called Narcos which is about him in the first two seasons, though dramatised a little for TV but still I'd say accurate. It then moves to the Cali Cartel that came after Escobar. Fyre Festival was a true disaster, it was kinda of fun to watch the fallout of it all. Thank you again Lila, take care of yourself!

I would say about 60 percent of the world likes being told what to do and what to like. that's why influencers will always exist. There have been plenty of cancels and revealing who a person really is, but most influencers just say they are sorry or it wasn't their fault and then go back to making their money.

Fyre Festival did a good job at giving people the "Refugee Camp experience" without the extreme unpleasantries of an actual war.
If that train wreck had been allowed to go for far longer than it did, some people would've been hospitalized or died and McFarland would been given a longer prison sentence for creating a death camp.
This guy apparently tried to sell tickets for the Met Gala, apparently not even understanding that the event is invite only...

I totally agree with your take on influencer culture. Trust is like a good reputation, it takes a long time to gain but just a few short moments to shatter.

Giving free booze to hungry people as an apology for not getting them food is an absolutely horrible idea. Anyone who has done any drinking should know that alcohol doesn't suppress hunger and drinking on an empty stomach means it hits much harder since it's gonna hit all at once.
definitely doesnt suppress it, but it certainly makes it easier to not think about. not to say that giving tequila to people with no food in them is a good idea in ANY way, shape, or form, it honestly could be classified as a war crime, but the alcohol would certainly help you forget how hungry you are, at least in my experience.

fun fact, Pablo Escobar was very rich off of selling cocaine back in the 90's, he was so rich and had so much money to throw away that he made an entire private zoo, however after his death said private zoo felt into ruin and a couple wild animals escaped, one type of animal that escaped where Hippopotamus and the many rivers and wet lands of South America, also the lack of competition and also predators that could harm them made it an ideal place for this animals to thrive and to this day there's a small population of wild Hippo's still roaming around South America, kinda wild lol
