- When Shaggy recorded his Hot Shot album, containing “It Wasn’t Me” and “Angel”, the label dismissed it as a throw-away album with “no hits”. “It Wasn’t Me” wasn’t even released as a single. But a series of happy accidents, some illegal downloading, and sheer determination, propelled “It Wasn’t Me” to become one of the first viral crossover hits. VICE met up with Shaggy on the 20th anniversary of Hot Shot which coincides with the release of his brand new Hot Shot 2020 album.

The two things I'll never get over are how first of all, this Shaggy guy just talks like a regular American dude in day to day life and, second, he knows damn well no one understands his lyrics.

Shaggy came to my college in Baltimore and performed it wasn't me before it was a hit, and like 20 people were in the whole auditorium. It was so sad. Glad it blew up to be the biggest song in the world.

That's the question: how did that song even get to napster that fast in those days?
My suspicion ... If your label wont put your album out (and you are sitting on top of studio copies ) ... you do it yourself. Because at that point you have NOTHING to lose. You'd NEVER be able to admit it publicly because the label can then turn around and sue you for estimated loss of early sales before they have to pay you anything at all. I think they ALL know how.who uploaded it .... they just can't ever admit it.

@@leeconstantine6335 Are you kidding ? We all did.... We used to run private BBS (dial up bulletin board systems) in our homes on separate lines and share files that.... way long before the internet..... Napster was a breeze in comparison.
