  • Research shows that in the third trimester (after 28 weeks of pregnancy) going to sleep on your back increases your risk of stillbirth. We don't know why exactly, but we do know that sleeping/lying on your back can restrict blood flow to the baby.
    We cannot control our position when we are asleep, but the important thing is to start on you side (it doesn't matter which side). And if you wake up on your back, don't worry, just roll onto your side.
    The advice relates to any episode of sleep, including:
    - going to sleep at night
    - returning to sleep after any night awakenings
    - day time naps.
