    Thanks a heap for these instructions! I am now officially SuperMom in my daughter's eyes for fixing her iPod at a fraction of the cost of replacing it.

    We certainly appreciate the detailed video which shows MOST of the steps. The Bluetooth antennae doesn't need to be disconnected as it doesn't impede removal.
    But more over, the device you are showing the video has been disassembled. The battery is adhered to the back of the display. Your example has been removed prior to recording as shown by the edges being bent up a bit.
    Overall it's a good Guide, and most normal folks should NOT attempt this repair.
    Just our two cents.
    Thanks again guys!
    Cheers.

      I just tried this. Due to all the unmentioned glue used in this thing, getting that display assembly out of the case was like pulling a face hugger off a colonist. Results were not good. In hind sight I should have just sent it in to be repaired. I'd appreciate an updated video showing the possible pain points one would experience in opening a real nano instead of a prepped, predisassembled one.

      Yup. Its pretty much totally destroyed now due to all the glue that holds all the layers together. I could hear the LCD cracking as I tried to lift the chasis out to get to the fourth screw. It's not designed to be taken apart by any stretch of the imagination. I've fixed MacBookPros myself too. Ugh. Oh well.

    just a reminder this is a demostration under optimal condition where the glue are not stiff and the screen is not crack. my very old ipod with a cracked bottom screen means you will easily separate the digitizer from the display instead of the whole thing pullled off in one go. also the stiff glue makes you bend the metal frame before separating it and as a result i broke the display.

    My wonderful nano went through the wash just a couple days ago. After 48 hours in a bag of rice, everything worked fine.... except the touch screen was unresponsive. After putting it into diagnostic mode and reassuring myself that the touch panel failed the diagnostic test, I went ahead and ordered one of them there nifty replacement screens. Hopefully it's easier to replace than it looks xD

      This is a difficult repair but with patients and the right tools I'm sure you can do it. A couple of tips I would suggest, when taking off the back plate don't use too much heat because the plastic will start to warp and remember the Bluetooth antenna is right underneath the plate, when peeling up the screen be careful not to bend the very thin frame that comes up with the lcd and digitizer, now if you get passed that part the battery is stuck really good with adhesive to the back of the lcd use the tad that's there to help lift the battery out if you try prying it with plastic pry tools then try not use too much pressure because the battery will bend and you will have to attempt to mold it back into place. Oh yeah, hopefully ***** sends you a working screen replacement since mine was defective :(

    Specific steps that are missing: 1) removing battery from the back of the LCD. It's not conveniently attacked to the back of the iPod the way it appears in the video, but instead pasted on the LCD frame, and requires gentle coaxing from all sides. PLAN on the LCD being trashed, and get a new one even if it's only the touch screen that's broken--they're usually sold together anyway. 2) Attaching the old button to the new lead. It took me a while to intuit that one, even though in retrospect it looks obvious. 3) Mounting the new LCD on the old LCD frame.
    Also, since my original touch screen was shattered, it was difficult to tell what all was supposed to come out together. Specifically the frame didn't want to come out with the screen, and got bent all to hell. I wasn't sure at the time whether what I was mangling was something I was going to need later (it was). Luckily, it was salvageable.

  • @philipgrayson
    @philipgrayson 8 років тому

    Well.... my screen cracked and I bought a replacement screen and tools, followed these instructions absolutely accurately. However, in removing the old screen, the glue holding the screen to the LCD screen frame below it was stronger than the frame itself, resulting in the frame braking. On attempting to complete the removal of the frame, it pulled the battery free from the housing.
    Apple have made the internal gluing of the Nano stronger than the repair techniques suggested here, and for us amateurs disassembling it, there's a significant risk of damaging the interior because the glued joints are stronger than the components they are glued to. That's been my experience, and I now wish I'd sent it back for repair.

      +philipg I'm sorry to hear this. The key is judicious application of heat.

      @philipgrayson 8 років тому +1

      well, it would have been helpful if this guidance video had suggested the judicious application of heat. I could have followed that guidance and saved myself a lot of money, and also a lot of wasted time.

    • @baqaqi
      @baqaqi 8 років тому

      I had the same problem, but was able to rescue the frame. The LCD, however was destroyed in the process. Luckily, the replacement touch screen I bought came with a replacement LCD. Because the LCD is so vulnerable in the disassembly, it seems a good idea to get the two together, even if you don't ultimately need the LCD.

    HORRIBLE replacement guide. Does NOT show the battery glued to the LCD, which is NOT just an easy pop-out, but a pry out from hell. Further, when trying to put the screen back in, it WON'T GO, as the metal of the framework keeps bumping into the white plastic bit on the bottom left.

    I have an apple iPod nano 7th generation. It has a problem with the volume turning itself down. I think the volume button was damaged when I put the "RooCase" cover on the iPod. Is there anyway to fix this? I did the diagnostic and it's definitely a defective "volume down" button that is causing the problem. Please help.

    Pretty good instructional video, but that's far from how mine went. I was nice, real nice and I destroyed part of the LCD. Fortunately, I was smart and bought the LCD with the new screen and tools because homework online said I'd probably kill it during the repair. The adhesive was a straight bitch and made removing the shattered glass a real job. Prying the entire assembly with the frame out from the unit? Yep, that sucked the most. I spent almost an hour on that part alone because there was enough adhesive to seal a gorilla's ass cheeks together. Another video suggested a blow dryer to soften the adhesive. That did help. Keep track of your screws. They are itty bitty and not the same size so track where they go. The replacement adhesive that came with my kit seemed sticky enough and was 3m but my screen kept coming loose after assembly so I heated it a little with the blow dryer and then stacked some books on it. So, hopefully tomorrow it'll be good to go. Then I'll charge it and turn it on and hope I didn't royally fuck anything up. Of course, the alternative was to buy a new one and I'd rather be a glutton for punishment and fix broken shit and expand my skill set. But, if this works, then $25 for the screen, lcd, and tools was well worth the trouble and frustration because I hate buying electronics. If it works, I'm buying a case for it. I also have a 2nd gen nano from 2003. I took that thing to Iraq twice. It still works and I think it's better than these wimpy touch screened ipods. I can't count how many times I dropped that one. I also have an ipod touch and immediately bought a case for that one so it doesn't shatter.

    I just got a ipod nano 7th Gen about a week ago. As soon as I charged it up and turned it on, it had lines on the screen, 5 white horizontal lines and 3 multicolored vertical lines, I tried restoring it but it didn't work. The lines didn't make too much difference and I could still see the screen well enough. But then a couple days ago, I let the battery run right down, I then plugged it into my laptop to charge but neither my computer or itunes detected it was connected. I assumed it would still charge though. But it's been charging for over 10 hours and it still won't turn on. Any ideas what is wrong with it/how I can fix it? Thanks in advance

    Fixez misses one very crucial piece of information. The battery is glued to the back of the LCD. This is very important and just cost me the loss of my iPod.
    following the video they make absolutely no mention of this very important detail.
    What happens is this, when you pry away the LCD to then remove the last connections, if your battery is glued to the back of the LCD, you will rip the connection of the battery, making your iPod complete unrepairable.
    I'm now out 50 bucks for the parts and tools plus the cost of a new iPod nano. (135.99+ tax on sale at target) total cost to fix my iPod nan? 195 dollars.
    thanks fixez, you really helped me out a whole lot. not.

      @XombiQilla 9 років тому +1

      +Vanna-Lee Fields I didn't. when I pried away the screen from the body, I didn't see that the battery was glued to the LCD.
      even gently removing the LCD from the body with the battery glued it, will cause the battery connection to rip. It's very thin. I only discovered this after I discovered the battery was glued to the LCD.
      So as a result, in one second flat, my nano went from something repairable to trash.

      +Hichamov Youssoufa Unfortunately the headphone jack is soldered onto the motherboard and that repair is outside the scope of our videos.

      +Fixez.com yes I dissembled the iPod and it's soldered in the logic board so can we repair it ? And thanks for the answer !

      I wouldn't recommend it - you would be better off getting a new logic board.

      no, nothing like that. it just stopped charging, I have tried several chargers and does not work. I've cleaned it with a sewing needle ... may have been that? :s

    Do Not Try This.. This model is a bitch to take apart and putting it back together is even worse. just sell it and buy a new one trust me. I cracked the fucken LCD, and I took my sweet as time. you will find it on ebay if interested.

    I really hate how these things are assembled because it caused me to bend the battery off the frame while i was trying to replace the screen. It was the absolute worst case of attempted repair of a product i personally own. I hate Apple products because they're so unpredictable and depending on the model, you'll never get the desired results of which in my case i screwed up the repair and i really wanted to fix the thing. I will never live that down...
