    I used to be one of those only color fast dyes, dyers. Then two things happened, one a person asked color fast for how long? The second, a guild I belong to did a dye day and turmeric was one of the dyes. I played along and added my minis to each pot that people brought, but because I didn't expect the turmeric to last I just set it on the back of my dye counter. Five years in direct sunlight later, I grabbed it for a project I just needed a little bit of color for, the color lost was minimal, almost not noticeable. This year I am just experimenting with whatever I want to use.

    Thank you, I loved this episode. I am fascinated by how dyeing works and the different ways it is done. The colours that you can achieve by small changes is amazing.

    Love the black bean dyeing and the lovely shades you got. I have just ordered seeds for dye plants and super excited about starting my first dye garden! I live in South Africa and handwork/crafting is only slowly gathering interest and most people do not know what I am talking about when I mention natural dyes and eco printing! BUT I just got a 2 week project incorporating natural linen I have to dye with avocado! How fantastic is that. So I am hounding the Mexican restaurants tomorrow to gather as much avo pips and skins as I can to start the dye bath

    Responded earlier before watching the full video - your spun yarn is gorgeous. I'm thinking of doing the NightShift as well, but I'm going to do a fingering version with different Opal self-striping sock yarns. I'll just make mine longer so it ends up being a bigger shawl. Great idea for hand spun yarns.

    Wow, this was super interesting. I didn't know black beans could do that. A fade with all four Blueface would be beautiful.😍 Love the yarn you spun.♥ I wish I was going to Rhinebeck🐏 and participating in the knit along. I have the pattern and I will make it out of rare breeds it's just going to take me a while. I haven't even decided what breeds of sheep I want to make it out of.🐏🐑 As always wonderful podcast 😃

    Gorgeous colors you got! I make black beans all the time and I really ought to try dyeing with them again. I tried once but got very disappointing results--a very light gray which I ended up overdyeing with copper. I wondered if my pH was off and that's why it didn't work so well. However, I just ordered some pH strips, so perhaps my dyeing will be brought to the next level!

    I love natural dyeing. I experiment a lot. It’s been like a sauna in Miami so at the moment I have hibiscus, coffee grounds and avocado stones cooking in the sun in my backyard. The hibiscus is looking really good. I usually leave the jars out for a couple months.

    thank you, this was great! I have been wondering about using black beans to dye and now I feel I have a better idea how it works and I think I will try it soon... wonder what would happen if you dyed the yarn once with the black beans, let the skein dry, then do it all again - so 2 dyeing sessions... wonder if that would make the color deeper or not....

    Great tutorial! Thank you. Beautiful yarns. Could you have put more yarn in those jars and gotten the same color, or was this the correct amount of liquid per skein of yarn? Thinking of dyeing up a larger batch. This blue is so lovely.

    • @NinjaChickens

      Washing Soda is Sodium Carbonate. You can usually find it in the detergent section of the grocery store. You can also use Calcium Carbonate. Both will bring the pH up and you only need a pinch or two.

    I was at Colonial Williamsburg over the weekend and they said turmeric was very colorfast. Have you any experience with turmeric fading? I love experimenting and I'm not put off by a fugitive color. It is too much fun!

    • @NinjaChickens
      @NinjaChickens  4 роки тому +1

      Do they have someone that demonstrates and talks about natural dyeing there? That's very cool!! Yes, I've experienced some fading with some turmeric things that I've dyed, but not nearly as much as I've heard some people talk about. Just a bit of a lightening of the color. Poke berries I've seen go from fuchsia to tan very dramatically, but with the turmeric it stayed the same color and lightened a bit.

      @@NinjaChickens Oh goodness yes! The weavers shop has several spinning wheels and looms. Once a month, they dye with dyestuffs that they know from historical accounts, ads, or receipts was traded in the time period (late 1700s). It is really a wonderful place. Everyone who works there is in period costume and some are real journeymen or apprentices in their crafts. Some stay in period when they are talking to you and most have a fantastic dry humor. We had a great time with the wig maker who found us very vulgar for having our hair down and wearing our tattered clothes. She was hysterical! There are nation builders who speak from the point of view of the character they have studied. It is very educational and they don't shy away from modern topics.

    If don’t intentionally raise the ph, how do you go about washing these items? Won’t all soaps raise the Ph? Is there a way to set it??

    • @NinjaChickens
      @NinjaChickens  4 роки тому

      If you set it with heat, it will turn brown. Most soaps are pretty neutral in pH, so they should be fine for washing the yarn. Plus, you don't use much soap when soaking it. Unfortunately, it will fade if in the sunshine (not like being worn outside, but left in a sunny spot for too long).
