Turning Ben into an unappreciated high school teacher while in purgatory was brilliant writing. Ben was my absolute favorite character. His reaction at 1:59 ... wow. Hand me a tissue.
I don't think it was purgatory. There were several alternate time lines and side flashes. This could be one of them, since in the same episode, his father mentions leaving the dharma initiative.
The flash sideways was in effect a place where the "personalities" of our Losties could "iron out" their regrets, their paths not taken, their "failings" in the realm of material existence. It was a "place" where some can "atone" for their "sins", while others could work out their issues and explore a sense of the life they might have had, had they made different choices. Frankly, I think the Sideways reality was the writers giving the fans a chance to see their favorite characters in the OFF Island setting and see what they would have been like when they were NOT dealing with Island driven matters.
Mira Furlan was such a beautiful woman and a very talented actress. She captivated and charmed us every single time she appeared on-screen. We lost a _lot_ when we lost her in 2021. Rest in peace, Mira Furlan
Did you notice the look on his face when Danielle said, "I'll put in less [onions] next time." He looks up like, "Next time?" Those two are drawn to each other. I think Ben knows that Danielle-and only Danielle- can end his loneliness. And she looked at him with love in her eyes. When Ben chooses to stay behind because he "still has some things to work out" he mainly means his feelings of guilt, but I think he also stayed behind because to wait for Alex AND Danielle. Great acting!
Which is maybe a bit weird considering what Ben did to Rousseau and, if we’re being honest, Alex in life. And maybe that’s part of why he didn’t go into the church. He still has to work that out.
@@aresef exactly. He needed to probably leave with Alex. In the flash sideways they've all sort of constructed this world where they get to somehow right the major wrongs in their life. Jack gets to be a dad, locke has a good relationship with his father, Sawyer is a cop. Ben, gets to atone for taking Danielle's daughter, but also make up for his failures as a dad.
Definitely a testament to the writing and Michael Emerson's acting that such a twisted, evil character became one that the audience truly felt for. Among all of the amazing things about this show, his transformation has to be up there with the best of them.
Did you notice the CLOTHES in this one? Ben is wearing the EXACT SAME outfit he is wearing in the episode where he confronts Ilana and tells her about his failure with Alex...then he goes to the beach, helps Sun with her tarp, and watches as the "Losties" arrive and everyone hugs each other...what a GREAT moment here and THERE! What a wonderful way to tie that all in!
I can tell by looking at this scene how someone can say from aside how in-your-face some of the dialogue is here and might be unrealistic, but if you understand that this is their souls afterlife, the place they've created for themselves to accept each other, to create closures with one another, to reconnect, to reconcile things - then you realize this scene is super touching, perfectly written and acted, and amazing
I missed Danielle! She was my favorite until they killed her off (of course). Her death was horrible. Everyone else got a dramatic, sad death. Hers was just kind of an ''oh well'' type thing. I think I was probably more sad about it than Alex, her own daughter. Such a shame. On a brighter note, I was really excited to see her back! She looks so good. I really wish they would've kept her alive.
Agreed. There was a rumor that the actress wanted her killed off because she didn't want to travel to Hawaii to shoot her scenes. That was proved wrong when the actress talked about her frustration for the writers killing her character. Who knows what they were thinking.
@@hectorgarza8959 most of us did. I think the writers did what they thought was right for the story overall. I'm not really upset about it, because it gives more screen time to other characters And I loved the show including the finale, so I'm good with it.
For that very reason it was memorable and great writing. Her character served her purpose and was acted outstandingly. They brought her back cause the story called for it. You need to go with the ebs and flows of the story and try to never make it forced.
it's always the little things that matter: michael emerson's subtle display of emotions at 2:23 is a winner. Plus, to insert authenticity, the producers used copper cookware, a favorite of the french.
The proof, that being a bad person and a murderer was not in his nature. He was made that way. I feel sorry for him, because I really wished, they were not dead, but this would be their life now
Despite all the horrible things Ben have done, he kinda saved Alex's life when he stole her from Danielle in the island. Danielle was unstable, she was alone and becoming crazy and she might have killed her baby. And Ben raised Alex with true love; he gave her everything he never had, a real father.
Its crazy to think that if it hadnt been for Mr Eko's actor deciding to quite the show (which was considered a great loss at the time) then we never would have got Benjamin Linus, who literally went from a bit part to being the biggest draw of the show, period. Much of the arc they had planned for Eko was adapted for Ben, in terms of there being a spiritual rival to John Locke that would lead to a multi-season feud
That explains a lot of the plot twists and all will be revealed! Blimey! Why did he leave? Was it too gory or violent? Also I was upset when the black smoke took him after he'd repented though rather arrogantly. He was great but the made him very extreme character for the most part.
Ben was always one of the most tragic characters that really got better as the writers dove deeper. He started as an enigmatic a-hole, but as the seasons rolled on, we found out that in his core, all he ever really wanted to was to feel special, or chosen. And what I loved about the afterlife scenes was that we see that in his heart-of-hearts, his fantasy is just to be a special person to one person. To just be a hero, a mentor, or even just looked up to and respected by just one person who saw something special in him. That's why Hugo and Ben were probably an amazing team, and why this afterlife with Alex was so important he didn't want it to end yet.
I am glad we finally get to see Mira Furlan as Rousseau again. I was worried that she would not be hired for anymore episodes. These scenes also has some of the sweetest irony ever. It seems like there could be a good ending for the flashsideways version of Ben.

This is so heartwarming. I am happy for Bens life. He truly was better in the last half of Season 6 and I've always despised him as a character before this.
When he looks at Alex and nearly breaks down, that is one moment across this whole show that always gets me, without fail (ok there are several others *cough* 'The Constant')
Part of me finds this scene touching, and part of me feels creeped out that the writers would make part of Ben's redemption story an intimated romance with the woman whose baby he stole in a past life. It would be kind of like giving Joffrey and Arya amnesia and then having them fall in love.
@Twili6 What makes you say that? Danielle was driven insane by the smoke monster and by losing Alex. In the afterlife where there is no smoke monster and reunited with Alex, she is the sweet, kind-hearted lady she was when she first arrived at the island. I'll admit that she looked a bit intense in this scene--a carryover from her life experiences perhaps--but I wouldn't say she's still insane.
One thing I didn't quite understand about Alex and Danielle in this sideways world: Are they Ben's projections or are they the real people and they just aren't ready to move on to the afterlife yet? I know Ben is really himself and he just hasn't remembered the island stuff yet, but I'm not sure about Danielle and Alex in the scene.
My sense is that Danielle and Alex are there to experience what they never had IRL. A true mother daughter dynamic. Alex never got to be real teenager going to school, prepping for college, studying for the AP exams etc. Ben was also experiencing his "other" possibilities, if he never got "stuck" on that d@mn island. Ben's status as a teacher confers, innocuously, a position of importance, but one of where he's using that authority and importance to look out for people. And Rousseau simply wants what she never got, the domestic life, living in suburbia, drop-off/pick-up at school, lasanga/Coq au vin night etc Ben is facilitating the chance for Alex and Danielle to have that experience. It's very interesting to pose the idea that our after-life experience may be preceded by a chance to experience all the various roads not taken and then to finally let go of the notions if ONLY I took that job in Chicago or NYC instead of Atlanta or IF only I asked out that gal in my cognitive psych class. If ONLY I didn't drink that night. It's a chance to let go of the attachment to the idea of a better more well-curated, mistake free or "sin" free life.
@HeavyStella it makes sense that this could be bens 'remembering' moment as we next time we see ben in the flash-sideways in 'the end' he has his memories. but maybe he hasnt remembered and he is upset as he loves and cares for alex
I wish so hard this would have been an alternate timeline, where they all remember the old timeline from the island and could live happy together but the directors were like: nope, just let 'em die
aww, such a heartwarming scene, i love ben so much its so sad that this time next week he will most likely be dead :( im dreading it so much an hoping im wrong, but i know they will kill him
