      And maybe that's exactly WHY they writers/directors put this scene in there. To essentially have the characters explain the "rules" of time travel to the audience. It's a pity that Avengers: Endgame mentioned Back to the Future but did NOT mention LOST. Also, I feel they did this to instill the idea that all our Oceanic survivors (those left anyway) are still in peril and can in fact die and aren't future protected.

      @@victorpradha9946 I agree with everything you said! And I also think, with the exception of the alternate timelines created in Endgame, their explanations for time travel were pretty similar. You’d think Hulk would’ve mentioned Lost, lol.

    • @SeanWheeler100
      @SeanWheeler100 Рік тому +4

      @@MsVamPireChic Maybe Lost wasn't notable enough? I mean, Rhodey and Scott listed off movies where changing the past can make you disappear. Endgame's rules follow multiversal rules. Lost's rules are different where all your time-travel actions have already happened on the same timeline. Lost's rules is more like what happened when Harry and Hermione rescued Buckbeak and Sirius in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.

    • @NobleBoss
      @NobleBoss 5 місяців тому +1

      @@SeanWheeler100endgame is probably the simplest one. You travek back in time but that instantly creates a separate branched timeline. But your original timeline remains unchanged.
      Harry Potter and LOST sound simple as well with the concept of whatever happened, happened. But it gets a little more complicated once you start to think about it.
      Back To The Future and Xmen DOFP are also pretty complicated.

      He wants more questions about time travel because he needs to get his story straight. _Lost_ is full of scenes of characters getting their stories straight. For instance, when Kate and the marshal were in a car together -- working together, of course -- they went over her supposed story for us to hear. She isn't even the real Kate! The original Kate was blown up along with her boyfriend in a house, while we saw this lookalike Kate get away on a motorcycle.

    • @RunstarHomer
      @RunstarHomer Рік тому +2

      @@goodmaro It's not really a hole in any plot. By all accounts, Miles was exactly right. The things he said were reinforced by the show repeatedly. There are plenty of possible explanations as to why Ben didn't mention Sayid. Time distorts memories, it's entirely possible that he simply didn't recognize Sayid. Or maybe he did recognize him, but didn't mention it. By the time Ben is an adult, he understands quite a bit about the island and may not even be surprised by the idea of time travel, and it's actually completely in line with his character to keep his mouth shut about something like that.

    • @goodmaro
      @goodmaro Рік тому

      @@RunstarHomer Sure, Miles was right because he *made* it right. The characters on _Lost_ , in their effort to fool the "(Manchurian) candidates" into thinking they'd traveled in time to witness past events, had to make sure not to create contradictions that would spoil the illusion. But Ben is the easiest of all, not being a "candidate" but being the scammer behind things; his story of having been on the island as a child is entirely made up by him.

    We all usually experience time in order from past to present. The years pass in order eg 2007 then 2008 then 2009.
    What has happened here is that the characters’ time is no longer passing in order. They went from 2004 to 2005 to 2006 to 2007 to 1977. So, even though they think of 1977 as being “the past”, it is currently their present.
    Even though 1977 is their present, they know what 2007 is like because they’ve been in that time. They know that adult Ben is alive and well in 2007 and therefore they know that he doesn’t die in 1977. They could try all they want to kill him but they would fail, because we know Ben doesn’t die.
    However, any of the characters can die because 1977 is their present. Maybe a baby Hurley is alive somewhere in the world in 1977 too, and we know he doesn’t die, but the adult Hurley can die.

      If you went back in time to your younger self, how easily would it be to kill your younger self? For me I walked to school alone as an 11 year old so it’d be very very easy for me to find and kill my younger self
      Even if that meant grabbing myself into a van and using a chainsaw to decapitate myself to ensure I was dead (sorry for the graphic description)
      If someone really wanted young Ben dead, they could manage it

      @@MasonOfLife You don't seem to be able to understand the implication of you killing your young self. You simply can't do it because if you suceed, you won't be able to go back in time as a grown up, therefore, you will not exist to kill your young self. Imagine that you've been born in the year 2000 and in 2050 you go back to 2010 to kill yourself as a 10 y.o. If you could, you won't be alive to time travel in 2050 back to 2010, got it? If you tried to kill your younger self, you would remember that happening as a kid and you would have survived, otherwise you wouldn't be around to do it.
      The very assumption that you HAVE a younger self means you failed to kill your younger self. Whatever happened, happened. You are not dead, so you were never killed. You would remember meeting your future self and remember surviving a murder attempt.
      Believing you have the agency to go back in time and change the future is an illusion, because you already did, and you survived

      But what you don't realize is that this and other examples of lampshading on _Lost_ (which Hugo is a master, yet scarcely the only practitioner, of) are clues to the actual plot, which is that these characters are all perpetrating a Big Store grift -- a long con involving many co-conspirators. There was no time travel, there were just a few characters knocked out and relocated among shills who'd convey to them that they'd jumped in time. Recall references on the show to "candidates"? They meant it as in the Richard Condon novel of brainwashing, _The Manchurian Candidate_ . The "candidates" are those who are not in on the scam. The characters in the clip here are all in on it, trying to get their story straight.

    Because the writers made it up as they went along. When they cast Ben for four episodes in season 2 they hadn't written 3,4,5 or 6. They made it up as they went along so this was tongue in cheek and they got out of it by saying Ben wouldn't remember anything when he woke up.

    • @Damon242
      @Damon242 6 років тому

      Lost Ghost Nights TV Channel it’s called a Retcon, everything long-form does it.
      And of course they didn’t have it all planned in advance - they didn’t even know that the show would go beyond one season and to be fair they never claimed that they did either.
      They knew how it would end - with the direct parallel between the opening and closing scene and the eye opening and closing.
      They planned each season out before filming which is clear by how tightly events unfold within each season. An impressive feat considering it’s a Network television show and how little time they would have had to do so (Network is still scripting and filming when episodes premiere versus Cable programming where the entire season is already filmed before it premieres).

      Why can't anyone connect what actually happened? Can't people remember that Ben went to the Tempel with Richard to survive where he would forget about everything? There's even a UA-cam clip of that part

    I find it very obvious that future Ben didn't recognize some guy he saw whilst being a kid tens of years ago. Who would remember?!

    It took me awhile to understand what Miles was explaining but, once I understood, it makes perfect sense (as long as all time is happening at once to explain how it happened the “first” time).

    • @RunstarHomer
      @RunstarHomer Рік тому +2

      Yeah, his explanation was not that great, but it really is the only reasonable form of time travel I've seen in any piece of fiction. Everybody gets older, they still retain their memories. Ben is a kid in this time period, and we've already seen him as an adult, so we know he doesn't die. But Hurley and Miles are older here in the 70s. The things they already did in the 00s, they did as younger people, and whatever happens to them now isn't going to change that.

    So much better than Jack and Kate's shitty mundane dialogues about how "strange it is to be back" whilst they awkwardly sigh and breathe heavily on one another.

    I think our perceptions change with age in some ways, and also obviosly our memories over time sort of vary in accuracy. Our brains try to make sense of the world, so our brain won't make that connection, or if we do, we will dismiss it.

    Why would you need answers when the most important things relies on the characters evolving? Lost is not just mystery, smokes monsters, foot statues and number which give you bad luck, the characters are important too. They are more important than just boring answers that explain everything. Also, I think is better and more fun to come up with your own theories than just giving you the answers.

  • @mypeermypeer342

    The reason why Ben couldn't remember Sayid is because it technically hadn't happened yet. The Sayid who tortured Ben hadn't travelled back yet. Even though it always happened to ben. It hadn't happened yet for Sayid.

    • @SeanWheeler100
      @SeanWheeler100 2 роки тому +5

      That only explains why Sayid didn't remember. Ben still should have remembered because it did happen to him and Lost runs on a fixed timeline with the Novikov self-consistency principle meaning what the time travelers did have always happened before they went back in time.

    I'm still in season 5, but that explains Ben, but why doesn't Danielle Rosseau remember Jinn or Ethan remember John Locke?

  • @DeathWarrant90
    @DeathWarrant90 13 років тому +1

    @cruman87 the ironic thing is that it's Sayid's fault that Ben became who he became...Sayid shot Ben in order to change the future and prevent Ben in become the leader of the others, however, in doing so he inderectly sent young Ben to the others since Jack refused to help the kid, which led to Kate bringing him to the Others = you can't change the past or the future, 'cause whatever you do in the past happened, so the future will still be as it always has been
