One of my all time favorite franchises. I saw the original on tv in the 90's and then was constantly renting all 5 from my local video store. I remember they had them in the 'cult classics' section.
As someone who has watched all 9 Planet Of The Apes movies, & I have noticed that the 3 Andy Serkis movies are essentially reboots of the 3rd, 4th, & 5th Roddy McDowall movies; Rise (2011) is Escape (1971), Dawn (2014) is Conquest (1972), & War (2017) is Battle (1973). The teaser for Kingdom makes me hopeful that we will get modern day reboots of the Original (1968) & Beneath (1970) as well.
Really ? I see rise as conquest remake ( caesar leading the rebellion ). Dawn as a remake of battle (Caesar trying to keep the peace complete with the rescue of human hostages ) and War as its own thing.
I played the original 1968 film for my 20 something y/o neighbor and the ending blew her mind. She also remarked on the quality of the ape makeup. This movie still packs a strong punch.
There was an episode of "Lost in Space" called "Fugitives in Space" where the Robinson men are in jail with an alien named "Creech." His makeup was a Ape prototype that John Chambers (who worked on the show) had from Planet of the Apes.
Why do these Planet of the Apes reviews continually show Karl Malden at the awards when they're talking about Schaffner? This is at least the second time I've seen this happen.
@@ajh6354 yeah he was in England/ Scotland directing a movie at the time. But they still put his voice over at the beginning and archive stuff from the first one.
As an 8 year old who watched all original 5 in a 2 day span when my cousin got the VHS boxset for Christmas, the wonder of these movies will never go away. I loved this vid obvi, but I don’t know if a movie franchise has ever been more deserving of a long form documentary. Would have been a great idea for the studio to put together before the new films come out. Would have been an east mid covid money maker.
Honestly, I think the Andi Serkis trilogy isn't necessarily a "reboot", but more of "the ORIGINAL" timeline that lead to the Original 5 movies. Yes, there are some inconsistencies, such as what year the Liberty ship launched, which contained Taylor and his crew (and Brent's expedition to find him was never mentioned, but there WAS a long time jump between Rise and Dawn). Cornelius, Zira, and Dr. Milo travelling back in time "reset" the events, because they technically brought the "virus" that made Apes smart to begin with, with them. That kinda "retcons/explains" how the apes went from "primitive" to "higher order" in the span of less than 20 years. But I'm okay with it. It also explains, in part, how the humans in the original movie are "animal like", and the "nuclear war" that took place altered some humans in a way that made them resistant to the virus and mutated their DNA for Beneath. It's a little convoluted, but the most recent trilogy can still fit in with the original 5 movies. I'm waiting to see what we get with Kingdom, as it could very well set the stage for the original 5 movies even more. The only real "outlier" is the Mark Wahlberg movie, which is pretty much a "self-contained" story. It was also (in real life) a "proof of concept" and "gauge of interest" movie. Also, also, does anyone watch the fan-made "Evening with Dr. Z" (I think that's what it's called) show that's on UA-cam? It's pretty amusing, and is directly related to the Original movies in the context of the makeup work. It's kinda like an "Ape version" of The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, except "Dr. Z" (looks a lot like Dr. Zaius, but obviously doesn't use that name so he doesn't get sued) is the host of the show.
Even as a kid in the 90's watching this every chance I got when it aired on TV, I understood it was a special amazing movie. Not as exciting as an action scifi like Star Wars, or in my opinion the less memorable newer Planet of the Apes. Yet every time I see it it's hard to deny how much of a smart philosophical story it holds. Everything about it captures your imagination, and makes you think. As I kid I didn't fully comprehend the story being told, but as I got older I understand asking the questions presented as you watch, and fitting pieces together is the point. It's about human nature, science, religion, philosophy, war, all that stuff and more. The movie isn't perfect, but it's a piece of art with concepts that will remain timeless.
We went to the drivein when I was a kid and saw "Escape from the Planet of the Apes" which is my favorite next to the first one. The very end of that one had us all paralyzed and speechless. The whole car load of us were so still it took a while for Dad to turn the ignition to reve up the car. A must see!
Hollow? Those films have been some of the only blockbuster films of the last 10 or 15 yrs that have acc heart, good writing, and good characters without relying solely on concepts or spectacle. Ur bugging there, my friend
Did you folks know there's a Doctor Z talk show!!!? I Just came across it yesterday Live action dude dressed up as Dr Z And thanks for the video Always enjoy
I've been seeing several Planet of the Apes videos come up lately, many of them fresh. I have seen all of them although it's a long time since I've seen the original sequels. I recently listened to the audiobook of Pierre Boulle's Novella. A lot of differences to the movie but when you look deeper there are a lot of parallels too. There was an incredible amount of dignity in the writing. I thought there was an urban legend about the American Flag having more than 50 stars but I counted them and it's 50. Anyway, great review.
Back in the early 1980s, I actually read the book. It definitely was an interesting book that was a bit different than the film but still a decent read anyway.
Fun Fact: people still think John Chambers, the guy who did the make-up for this movie, did the famous Bigfoot suit in the Patterson/Gimlin film even though he denied it to his dying day.
My favourite piece of trivia for the film is the final words in the film "God Damn you all to Hell!" which was considered too offensive. But an impassioned appeal to MPAA by Charlton Heston, where he said the "offensive" language was justified given the gravity of the situation.
Just after seeing the latest Apes movie :D Now gonna watch in near future. And yes, Rod Serling is a legend. The Twilight zone is one of the best tv series.
What you can do even with the technology you had at the time and still do it with what you got and do it again with the keedom of the planet of the apes 2024 movie
Planet of the apes, got the Academy award for make up, because the members of the Academy could not believe that Stanley Kubrick used actors in his film 2001 space Odyssey, but instead believed that he used actual apes.
The test makeup was done by Fox makeup head, Ben Nye. The prosthetics that were eventually used were created by John Chambers. No offence, but most of the info in this vid is available on the excellent documentary Behind the Planet of the Apes, which covers all the classic movies and also mentions the T.V. show and Cartoon.
To me 1968 movie 2001 Space Odyssey have better ape make-up, or more precisely it is very realistic ape costumes, John Landis said that he took ape costumes from garbage tin to make movie Schlock. See You Next Wednesday.
That sounds like a lot of hassle the actors had to go through wearing all that make up. It's a shame Valerie Jarrett wasn't around at the time to save the day.
No ape movie is going to top the original version. It definitely was like a long Twilight Zone film with the twist ending. I own the first 5 on remastered VHS. I need to get it on Blu-ray eventually. The 2001 version was ok, but it lagged through the ending. It was a similar twist like the original version, and you can't help but wonder what might have happened in the next film. The new films are okay. I also own the TV series on DVD, and I watched some years ago the animated series on HULU way back when. The acting in the first film was really good. For its time, the makeup was good, but it might seem dated compared to today.
Loved the original, Marks movie wasn't great it made the original that much better. The current reboot is good. it's just missing something that the original had.

Good vid overall BUT when Schaffner is mentioned, Karl Malden is shown. Also, when Kim Hunter is mentioned, Bette Davis is shown.
The best way for someone to see this movie the first time is without knowing it exists and seeing no trailer and not being told the name of the movie.

I loved every single film as a kid and bought the dvd box set for an anniversary edition. If you love it, you love it 🎉
The original Planet of the Apes is Top 10 best science fiction film of all time.
Roddy McDowell was the MVP of the Planet of the Apes. Playing both Cornelius in the first and third and his son, Ceasar; in the last two.
He also played Galen the ape in the live action tv series.
Roddy was not in Beneath the Planet of the Apes. Cornelius was played by David Watson in that one. Though I agree that he still gets the MVP award.
