  • Black Actresses and The 'Oscar Curse': In 2002, Halle Berry won the Oscar for Best Actress for her role in the movie Monster’s Ball. It was the first and (to this day) only time a woman of color was given the Academy Award for Best Actress. After her name was called, she got on stage and said that her 20 years later, no other actress of color has won the Academy Awards top prize, in spite of evolutions in the field of cinema that saw black women get more opportunities and be represented in new ways. How has black actresses’ relationship with the Oscars evolved through the years and what does it tell about their condition in Hollywood?

@Salsal two points can be true definitely the Oscars hate horror movies and I know for a fact that was a contributing factor however there’s also a history of the Oscars rarely giving awards to actresses of color for performances and movies that were/are subversive to racial, ethnic and gender stereotypical roles/films you can look at majority of the black, Latina, Asian and mixed race women who won acting Oscars and it all in m roles/movies that fit into Hollywood stereotypes against women of color, there’s actually a rarity that a actress of color to win an Oscar for playing in a film that was completely anti-stereotype or used those stereotypes to be more subversive and add more depth, complexity and multi-layers and especially for in diverse/unconventional genre-based films

I'm just frustrated bc she won her Oscar for a mamie role in a white savior movie. She continued her success in "The Shape of Water", but by playing the 'sassy black woman' trope and as a janitor no less! She's typecast in the worst way. How do we let this fly? Are there no other roles for bbw? When black characters aren't getting saved by white folk, they're used as one-dimensional "magical negroes" or "mamies" that rescue or teach the white protagonist to evolve. They're never given the same story arc, usually any "growth" they might have is reduced to a single sentence on the script. If there's any artists that have a wealth of pain to tap into for creative film work, it's black women, so idk why these actresses aren't given meatier roles that they could bite into without reducing themselves to caricatures.

    • @YourMajesty143
      @YourMajesty143 Рік тому +3

P.S. I'm not completely jaded, bc not all hope is lost. By far, one of my favorite Oscar wins was for Mahershala Ali in "Moonlight". Yes, on the surface it might seem like his character was played as another "drug-dealing gang-banger" trope, but the role was written in an elegantly multidimensional way. Unlike the same trope played by Denzel as Alonzo in "Training Day", the character of Juan in "Moonlight" was of a father figure who took an outcast into his home. His emotional resonance for the audience was forged when he had to grapple with the dichotomy of his street work, which conflicted with the responsibility he took on as a surrogate father to the main character Chiron. He further broke stereotypes by being compassionate to a gay young boy, despite the socio-cultural barriers of homosexuality that weigh heavy in the black community, especially amongst men. The film explored the many intersectional margins of black identity so beautifully well. And above all the "wokeness" (that troglodytes will accuse of such a movie), it is undeniably and unashamedly full of heart. The story alone outweighs any underlying political messages that could be gleaned. My tears still well up just remembering some scenes. If you haven't watched the movie yet, I highly recommend it.

The problem is not with the Oscars. The problem is that screenplays with well written characters for black actors, and, as a Cuban-American, let me add Latinos, are not either not being written or not being greenlit. They can’t give acting awards for roles that aren’t being written or produced. Another way to fix this problem is to cast actors of color in roles that don’t need to be white. Louis Gossett won Best Supporting Actor in An Officer and a Gentleman for a role that was not written to be a black man, but they cast a black man in the role and he won. That was 40 years ago. Why this has not happened more often since then is beyond me.

THIS . Hugh . I am under the impression that Will wasn’t aware (until now ) the responsibility and the weight of his legacy play on black people who aspire to become a mainstream actors one day .I know it sounds like a stretch bc Will Smith is human and the fate of black actors who strive to be mainstream doesn’t revolve only on him . However , the reality is that Smith is the only black actor (beside Denzel even tough I feel like Michael B Jordan can be there one day but I might be wrong ) with the luxury of consistently getting the main role in every single movie his in (especially in blockbusters) , in addition of bringing big $$ in the boxe office and making some people to see the movie just bc he’s in . Other black actors either star in blockbusters that are hit in the box office but always get supporting characters roles (that are often very stereotyped let’s be real ..even tough it’s changing) or star in not so mainstream stuffs or star in movies that are more suited for black entertainment. Now that he tarnished his reputation with this stupid slap you would think that Hollywood (who’s mostly white) will not be more reluctant trusting a black man having the main roles in mainstream cinema like blockbusters movies ? If find this pretty upsetting and unfortunate .

“The absolute shameful objective of this training [at Juilliard] was clear - make every aspect of your Blackness disappear,” Davis wrote. “How the hell do I do that? And more importantly, WHY??!!!”
Davis’ start in Hollywood was rife with limiting roles for Black actresses, mostly for dramatic drug addict parts, as Davis shared in a New York Times interview. According to Davis, casting directors thought she was “too dark” and “not classically beautiful” enough to lead a romance film.

We've seen some positive shifts but there is much more to be done. I want to see black actresses win Oscars for playing roles that aren't about slavery, pain, the maid, or what not. Viola as Ma Rainy was a great example of a woman who's a boss and thriving. I've also noticed how a lot of black actresses are regulated to central SUPPORTING roles in movies where they get a special title, but it's usually overlooked. I hope Octavia gets more roles like “Ma.” I hope Angela Bassett gets some more leading roles that she SO deserves. Viola Davis WILL win a best actress Oscar one day. I also hope Halle Berry pulls an Angela Bassett and gets more quality roles she deserves. Black Actresses deserve much better.

I never knew that Halle Berry was the only woman of color that won the best actress award… insane that we don’t just write off these white supremacist institutions for what they are. I understand why it’s important for the careers and longevity of actors in theory. But as you argued in this video, the bolstering of a career after an Oscar win for black actresses isn’t guaranteed.

Damn, Halle Berry said in her acceptance speech that "Tonight this door has been opened for women of color" and not a single Best Actress win since 2002. I don't blame her for saying ain't shit changed. There's been some improvement in the diversity field in all categories, I'll give them that but as some have pointed out, be mad at storytellers and writers as well as the Oscars. If believable stories are not being told for or about black people and POC in general that warrant a win in leading roles in the eyes of voters, that's a double edged problem which needs to be fixed at the roots.

As I said in a previous comment , I can understand why people say that biracial aren't black bc bi racial people can sometimes have only a very small percentage of African American blood . However, “bi racial “ is not a race imo. People who are half Asian /half Latino are biracial , people who're half Caucasian / half south Asian (like from India) are biracial and so on so forth so as people who are half white / half black . Plus, being bi racial doesn't necessarily means light skinned there are people who are bi racial (with one parent black the other parent white) who turn out to be dark skinned (very rare but possible ) . We’re gonna say that they’re not black ?.So if people like Obama , Kamala Harris or Halley Berry are not white not black what are they then ? Even tough I CERTAINLY acknowledge their privilege comparing to their dark skinned counter parts , biracials don't have it easy neither in the industry simply bc of the color of their skin. I am not hating , I am just curious and asking a question maybe someone can clear my head about that .

Here are other examples: Denzel Washington for Training Day instead of Malcom X. DIanne Keaton for Annie Hall instead of Looking for Mr Goodbar; Rene Zellweger for Cold Mountain instead of Chicago, and of course Leo Di Caprio only after he was almost eaten by a bear.

Good essay, as usual. I wish you would have remembered to include little Quezvanienay (spelling) for “Beasts of the Southern Wild.”
They also treat that young actress like she too “did something wrong.” Her historic nomination is no longer ever mentioned. That baby acted her little
    a ss off❣️
[And as far as bl k “Annie,” That was terrible writing & direction: She can’t be blamed for that as the starring role]

No full blooded black woman has won the best actress Oscar yet. Halle is mixed raced just like Obama . Let’s just come correct. Viola should have been a best actress Oscar winner for fences, there was nothing supporting about her role. She was the female lead in that movie and they gave her the lesser award. Angela basset should have won for playing Tina Turner however they screwed her. Whoopi’s should have won best actress for color purple and Oprah should have won best supporting for her role in the same movie. People need to recognize they give the award to black men not women.

I was wondering if you could do a video on Prince since the anniversary of his death is coming up. You could talk about his rise to stardom from Minneapolis, his commercial peak with Purple Rain, him pioneering the Minneapolis sound, him challenging male sexuality, other successful albums e.g. Batman, Diamonds and Pearls etc. His "fall" in the 90s due to his disputes with his record label, changing his name to a symbol and him challenging the industry. His rise again in the 2000s with Musicology, the Superbowl etc and then his death as well as legacy thanks.

Yep, and for 94 years they claimed the other actress just did a better job, and deserve the win. All of it is subjective. In my opinion, the proof is in how well the movie stands the test of time. They know deep down those movies s*ck as*, and proof is how much those movies are remembered decades later.
