But even in the north, not on the eastern part (alsace = germanic), nor the western part (britanny = celtic). Even at the start of the 20th century, half of the metropolitan french population didn't speak french as a first language. The unification is due to repression by the french state, over the centuries, until only recently, when many pushes in the 80s-90s were successfull in demanding the return of the local languages, but too late for it to change course. So now only old people here and there speak one of the old languages.
