That´s why you see the two lines marking the sample volume where the measurement is taken. The downside of the PW doppler is that it isn´t all that powerful and not able to measure high velocity blood flow. That´s what the continuous wave (CW) doppler is for which on the other hand can only measure all velocities along the line of measurement without the specific depth focus.
