- The History Of Jingle Bells - From Blackface to White Christmas...and beyond!
"Jingle bells" is one of the most popular Christmas songs, written over 150 years ago and covered over 250 times. Versions of it are sung all around the world every year...but its origins may surprise you! - Розваги
This channel is a hidden gem, love it.
And the odd thing is - there is NO mention of Christmas in the lyrics of “Jingle Bells”, yet it’s probably what everyone thinks is the quintessential Christmas song. In fact I’ve read that the songwriter supposedly intended for it to associated with Thanksgiving. I’m not sure that’s believable since there usually isn’t deep snow in the northeastern USA in late November, so sleigh riding isn’t possible yet.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Always enjoy your videos, great work, keep it up!
The crazy part is in the lyrics it says one horse open sleigh.. I have no idea why I even thought it was for Christmas nd Santa has multiple reindeer not horses
That's actually a really good point!
Good history, thanks. Also I heard that "jingle bells" were originally used on slaves to hear them running away.. is this bad information?
Thanks for watching and commenting...
Sadly, you're not wrong. There were neck shackles with bells attached used on slaves.
Interesting way beyond Christmas!
great video! thank you very much! and probs to those astronauts! ;-)
civil war era songs are so fucking catchy - gotta admire the propagandist compositional skills. Pure evil right at the heart of the spiritual/commercial holiday anthem. So American 🇺🇸
There’s a blooper version of “Jingle Bells” by Bing Crosby and the Andrews Sisters. After they’ve all made various mistakes but have continued to sing anyway, near the end Bing misses his cue and then ad libs, “Jingle bells, jingle bells - holy Jesus Christ!”
Great video! Interesting how readily unsavory origins of bits of American pop culture are neatly tucked under the rug...
Yay
?
Like most American customs... derived from racist roots
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Still watching?
You'll have watched them all soon!
😀😆
I think maybe where the CCs have "slave riding in the winter months" instead of "sleigh riding"; "Bing Crosby recorded a virgin" instead of "a version"; and "famous menstrual singer" instead of "minstrel" that it might be worth correcting. Also that Kyna Hamill's research should have been cited if it had been used, which seems highly likely. It's very much worth reading, as there's considerably more nuance to what she wrote than most news media coverage conveyed. But otherwise, a well-composed, brisk video on the subject with good, clear narration and choice audio samples.
Ha auto generated subtitles can be funny. But yeh I should fix that. Cheers
I didn't use Kyna Hamills research, like with all my videos, I did my own research. But thanks for bringing it to my attention. I will check it out.
Bing Crosby how old or u
Lol. Its possible to be aware of recording artists that existed before you were born. Especially if, like Bing Crosby, they've recorded over 70 studio albums and released over 400 singles. 🤷♂️
Thanks for another educational video Wayne... i'd prefer to hear this rather than Mariah Carey lol
🤯😮💨
Its so amazingly exhausting that racism is built into all our history.
Will Lyle was screwed. Join the club.
lol
Biggest reach ever 😂😂😂
"Biggest...ever" you say. Well thanks I guess 🤷♂️😆🙄
See previous comments for serious answer. ✌️😁
mariah's is better
They didn’t step on eggshels in those days, If it was intended to be racist you would know about it,
Go listen to some fiddlin john carson 😉
I think u missed the point entirely. Not suggesting it was written as an intentionally racist song. 🤦♂️
Just that it contains the latent, inherent racism of the time.
That's not a reach at all. Its evident and demonstrable. 🤷♂️
Thanks for watching and commenting anyway.
