  • Little is known about the composer of "Jingle Bells" fighting for the Confederate cause during the Civil War when his minister brother fought on the Union side. This compelling twist of events took place in Savannah, and the song is featured in AMERICAN CHRISTMAS CLASSICS, a three CD collection and lavishly illustrated book about the fascinating stories and lyrics of great American carols and holiday songs.

I've had a fascination with "Jingle Bells" for some time now, and have over 500 different recordings of the song as released by various artists over the years. One thing continues to puzzle me: \when\ did the original melody of the chorus get changed? The one we sing today is very different from that in of the original sheet music in the Library of Congress.
The tune was published in 1957, yet one of the earliest recordings -- by Edison in 1898 -- already has what we regard as the "modern" melody. Granted, that's some 40 years later... but still, one wonders exactly when the switch took place, and who may have been responsible for it.
