I went to west Virginia for a robotics competition (it was a major culture shock, I live in Alaska, and HOLY COW your summers are scorching) and they told us to learn that song before we came. One of the Brazilian teams sang that song at least once on each of the five days of the competition.

I’m Scottish. I have visited New York, Florida ( Orlando) and San Francisco. I have to say the east coasters were a lot like us. In San Francisco we stuck out like sore thumbs. I still loved it , even though no one could understand us and said we talked too fast 😉🏴

SF is one of the most linguistically diverse cities in the country. I can walk to the corner store down the block and depending on which of my neighbors I pass I’m likely to hear English, Spanish, Amharic, Chinese, Korean, Arabic, and who knows what else. But for some reason people here love to let you know that they don’t understand you if you have a strong accent. I don’t get it.
As a Floridian, i say this in the kindest way possible: if you are down here to visit one of the many theme parks we have down here, TAKE AN UBER! Tourists are the worst drivers and we already have to deal w all the senior citizens on the road!

It's also very case by case. Switching languages can be condescending and hard to follow, but I find many people who aren't native English speakers really like it. If you're making a conscious effort to learn and use some Spanish to better connect with someone they will usually be flattered.
