Bad Romance: Women's Suffrage is a parody music video paying homage to Alice Paul and the generations of brave women who joined together in the fight to pass the 19th Amendment, giving women the right to vote in 1920.
In 2010, Soomo Publishing launched a parody music video called Too Late to Apologize: A Declaration [www.youtube.com/watch?v=uZfRaW...]. The result was a viral hit and remains a popular teaching resource for history teachers and political science professors across the United States. The response was so overwhelming that Soomo decided to follow it up with Bad Romance: Women's Suffrage.
Making music videos isn't Soomo's main focus, but education is. Check out our Teaching Resources [soomopublishing.com/suffrage/#...] for more information on how this video can be used as a learning tool.
If you aren't familiar with the original video that prompted this parody, you should watch the original by Lady Gaga [ • Lady Gaga - Bad Romanc... ] (content advisory for suggestive/violent imagery). The song "Bad Romance" by Lady Gaga went to number one in 17 countries and peaked at number two on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. The video won a Grammy and seven MTV Video Music Awards.

I bet she butchered it.😏
She beat the cover up

10 years and this video still holds as one of the best parodies on the internet
Yes indeed
Auyyeee I’m here in 2022 for the first time 🙌🏼
@@thecoldglassofwatershow same!
i dont think it really qualifies as a parody just because of how well made it is. I'd consider it an adaptation
"I WANNA WEAR PANTS" Hell, that's a reason to fight right there.
Do you not get it? Who wore pants then oh yeah it was men and what do men have THE RIGHT TO VOTE so its saying they just want to be treated like men do!!!! Try to actually be smart next time
Leah Cormier Jokes must be hard to understand where you come from.
Leah Cormier Damn girl I'm pretty sure he was agreeing with the video.
Dr. Banjo
My sister was part of the group that fought for the right of girls to wear pants in our schools in our town. There was a time when girls Weren't allowed to wear pants to school. I remember it. It wasn't fun. And we fought to wear pants.
Honestly, I’m all about not wearing pants
ngl, history is by far my least favorite subject in school but THIS GOES SO HARD i listen to it unironically ☠️☠️

Literally this is so true just had to listen to this a couple days ago in class
My teacher played this today and I had to come back to it 😭😭
It is very factual. It even has the Alice Paul character quoting a modified version of the Equal Rights Amendment, and Abigail Adams (wife of John Adams) quote from a letter to her husband: “Remember the Ladies” imploring him to write women into the new Constitution. Sadly, he just laughed at her request. Well done!
Harry T Burn, the man in the video who changed his vote, was my great uncle. His mother, my great grandmother, wrote him that note in his pocket to encourage him to do the right thing. There's a statue of the two in my hometown that says:
"Every vote counts
Every letter or phone call counts
One more person doing the right thing can make all the difference"
That story, the story of doing the right thing for others even when it is hard, has inspired so much of who I am. I will forever be grateful.
This music video still makes me tear up after all of these years. I'm so grateful for its creators.
I learned something new today from you. So thank you so much for that! :)
Wow, that's so awesome! I'm glad you were able to find this video!
Thank you for your comment. That’s some great family history. Kudos to them both! I also got a tear in my eyes when I thought of what those women went through, not only for themselves but for us! We stand on their shoulders, and we also have our own fight today. I only ask that the ERA get put into the Constitution in my lifetime, but it’s not looking like that’s going to happen (I’m 73). I will continue to fight for as long as I’m able.
That is just AWESOME! What an amazing bit of family history! I think my mother (who wouldn't have particularly liked the music) would have approved of this video if she'd ever seen it -- when I was a kid she would bring me into the voting booth with her, like my dad with with my brother). Because she was raised that VOTING IS IMPORTANT! And I remember the first time she ever voted a split ticket, instead of just pulling the big GOP lever -- it would have been in the mid to late 1970s, when the "Right to Life" party was moving in on judgeships in NYS. And she was going "OMG -- I do NOT want those people anywhere NEAR the bench! Hmmm --- Republican line, Conservative Party line, RtL party line..." And voted for the Democrat in EVERY JUDICIAL RACE (If my MAGAhat cousin ever heard that she did that -- and the reason why? His brain would explode....)
I also find it interesting that many people today think it was so long ago, but, to me, because I’m 73, remind myself that my own mother was already five years old when women got the vote. Doesn’t seem so long ago when I remember that,
.
I heard this in my history class today and I've already listened to it 10 times.
Me too

My college American History II professor showed us this a couple days ago.
I just listened to it in history
I listened to this in history class so long ago and it still hits hard
my grandmother was a sufferagist in Cleveland Oh. my grandfather supported her in her quest for the vote.
i know her
GoddessNeith your grandfather seems like a very nice guy. He must have really loved your grandmother. That is exactly what a husband or boyfriend should be to their partner ie loving and supportive. I thank him for doing the right thing by supporting your grandmother in her efforts.
the feminism in me manifesting when my 5th grade teacher showed us this video
OMGG YESSS but she didn’t show us this she showed us the Declaration of Independence but it’s still a banger😝
same but showed us the Declaration one in 4th grade, this is my first time seein this video@@vae5612
My daughter loves this video. Her social studies teacher showed the class this video to help them learn about women's rights.
the power this song has that even its parodies are masterpieces. Its already a classic. And to think that it was written by Gaga when she was only 23 🤯
this is very, very catchy. cant stop listening
I'm glad they finally added the credits. After I saw this for the first time quite a few years ago, I had to look hard to identify Meredith Garrison as the Alice Paul character. She's brilliant!
History is my favorite subject and this song was played only once but I now listen to it every now and then because it’s so good

Listened to this a good 8 years ago.... listened to it over the years and still have it memorized. This song is a jam
My history teacher put this on in class with no context 😭
I seen this video multiple times and I don't even know you can even call it a parody. It tells history in such a unique way. I love it!
Man brings back memories when i was in history class
I would like to say, thanks to Professor Fink for introducing me to Alice Paul and showing me this video.
If you see this comment, I really appreciate what you have taught me in your classes.

How you gonna say i wanna wear pants and then come out wearing the most goofy pants in the history of pants?
Because it’s called freedom of speech? And anyone can kinda talk if you haven’t noticed? 🤨

civics go hard with this song lowkey
my history teacher made us watch this ☠️☠️☠️
bruh my whole class was laughing-
also can someone tell me what they are doing with the angrey woman 1:49
That part represented that young women suffragists were put into prison for drinking when it was illegal at the time in the 1920's. Many women went on a hunger strike in those prisons in which they refused to eat. In this specific scene, it demonstrated how law enforcement force fed them through tubes through the nose. It was a form of torture, very painful
To add to what Mael said, this was depicting Alice Paul, one of the more radical suffragettes, who herself hunger striked and was forcefed. I would link to a depiction of it in the film _Iron Jawed Angels_ , but all I can find isthe full movie, but a crappy quality version. There's supposed to be a clip that's of better quality, I don't know why I can't find it. Here's a link to the wikipedia article about Paul: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alice_Paul.
ua-cam.com/video/jldfd8MUxaQ/v-deo.html. They force fed Alice Paul- a suffragette leader who went on a hunger strikes for women to get the right to vote

Didn't even think of that, but yes the song absolutely applies!
And people laughed when feminists warned that 45 would do this exact thing. Always trust your gut feeling
my teacher thought this was actually a lady gaga video and made us watch the whole thing…
Best version of Bad Romance. Sorry, Gaga.
I have a feeling she'd be totally ok with that
@@CortexNewsServicenah. She did a Ceases and Desist for the song.

This made me very emotional. I don't realize on a daily basis how hard women fought for our right to vote. Thanks ladies :)

I'm guessing she's seen it, and that she's proud to have her music used this way!
Best version of this song ever.
The Economics of Sex
I really liked that at the end the father was happy his daughter got to vote.
Which part are you talking about?
Near the end when all the guys are voting, and the last one votes "yes", and they start fighting you can see him smiling in the background.
That's meant to be the President of the United states...
myvampirediary1 Oh, I always thought it was that girl's father.
Treeslawood
No, it's President Wilson.
you hear everything profound and about voting, and then at 4:36
"I wanna wear pants!"
is this the same people who made the declaration of independence song?
John Lee the same company, yes.
Angeline Ma™ It was actually an issue. Skirts in those days were long and heavy to preserve "modesty", and severely restricted movement; countless women were burned when their skirts caught fire, fell down stairs by tripping on a hem, drowned if they fell in water, and plain couldn't do anything physically active--no sports, or even bike-riding. And any woman who wore sensible clothes, such as trousers, was arrested for cross-dressing. So pants do contribute to progress.
Rosa Night oh yeah, I do agree. what I mean is that many people might not understand what they mean because the line sounds so sudden. I mean that they should maybe provide some introduction to the "I wanna wear pants!" line so that people can understand that they might take their freedom for granted.
Rosa Night Exactly. There was a whole movement around it called rational dress. It started out advocating against the tight lacing of corsets and expanded into other things, bicycle suits, bloomers (not underwear, a sort of precursor to pants), skirts that were above the ankle and easy to move in etc.
My teacher showed us this in social studies yesterday heheheh

I came on to share my delight at how creative and fun this video is and just find a bunch of men freaking out about it? SERIOUSLY? This video speaks only to equality and the bravery that women had to fight for the vote. Men attacked women marching for that right, it was not an easy movement. I'm very disappointing in the little boys complaining right now. This is a 100 year anniversary tribute boys, get over it please and celebrate with the rest of us.

Thank You!
if someone comments "shut up bitch and make me a samich" i swear to god...
i feel you
Isabel Wolf No offense, but women do have rights. (At least in the US.)
The women (and some men) fought so hard for all of us to be given the chance to vote. And now a lot of people don't even participate in any political matter small or big that requires a vote. I feel like it's so disrespectful to women's suffrage.
well this is my new favourite informational song
This is so well done and also modern, which makes it appeal to a younger crowd. What an awesome idea!
it's really iconic that most women are still fighting for rights and it's 2015

LIES! I'm sorry but women have more rights than men do these days.
Matthew Conroy i'm sorry, but around the world there is STILL women fighting for their rights. men still think they're superior to women, women get less pay than men do, men treat women as if they're objects, etc. you're not a woman and clearly you don't know how it feels.
I have watched this 19 times in a row already. I love this parody so much!!
I remember I saw this in my U.S History class, then saw your other video of "To late to Apologize" in Middle school :) I still suggest this to any history teacher who wants to both:
1. make a point in their lesson
2. and still have your students attention near the end of the day
This did do just that, least for my class
Still makes me tear up

I'm a man and I say women HAS RIGHTS!!!
but not back then for sure and we actually get 30% less then men in equal jobs
Jade Silver if you look deeper as to why that is, then you understand that no goveenment can fix that fact.
Aubrie Tremblay doesn't mean we cant try is what i'm saying
Jade Silver you're missing the point. women aren't paid less because of any discrimination. the "pay gap" is a mischaracterization of things, and when controlling for education, experience, hours worked(how many, when, and where) etc....the pay gap doesn't actually exist. there's nothing to try to correct.
there is always something you can fix Dravous Wild
