Eric Liddell, also known as the Flying Scotsman, was an unlikely Olympic champion. With a unique style of running - with his head back and mouth open - he was even ridiculed by his opponents. Still, he overcame all of that in the Paris 1924 Olympic Games.
Liddell's first Olympic final took place in the 200 metres competition where he won the Olympic bronze medal with a time of 21.9 seconds. However, his most impressive performance would come later in the 400m, where he covered the first 200m in an astonishing 22.2 seconds. During the second half of the race, he was still able to increase his lead against his fellow competitors to win the Olympic gold medal. His time - 47.6 seconds - was now the new Olympic record.

The 47 second time on s dirt track today would fall somewhere between 44 and 45 seconds. That guy was incredible. I ran a 47 second quarter mile at the Penn Relays, I thought I was going to die. I hate it when people talk shit about sports who never participated in the sport, especially track and field. Liddell was the Michael Johnson of his time. Even today there are very very small number of men who have run 43-45 second 400 meters. The vast majority of 400 meters ate below 46 seconds. Even today, Liddell would be competitive in the NCAA Division I Track and Field.

I think the circumstances of how Eric Liddell broke the world record in the 400 m, however, makes his race one of the most remarkable in history. Firstly, the 400 m was not his event. He refused to compete in his best event (100 m) because it was on a Sunday, and then just months before the Olympics games, started training for the 400 m which he had only competed in a handful of times before. Secondly, Eric wasn’t even considered a contender in the 400 m. Thirdly, Eric was given the outside lane - the absolute worst lane in track for this event. Fourthly, this was a 500 m track so that made running in the outside lane even more of a disadvantage. Fifthly, Eric was only about 5’8” and at most 150 pounds, which made him the smallest and shortest person competing in the 400 m - which is yet another disadvantage. Sixthly, Eric had already run multiple races that day in 100 plus degree heat. Seventh - Eric’s running form was such that it’s a miracle he knew where he’s going! :) I don’t think there’s ever been another victory in Olympic history quite like this!

It's all about the frame rates then, and now. The camera then was hand cranked. The only form of speed regulation was the cameraman going "one one thousand, two one thousand" as he rotated the handle. Old flicks ran at anywhere from 12 to 22 frames per second. Today it's possible to produce normal-speed versions of the older silents through a process known as stretch printing. But it's tedious and expensive and many film labs hate to do it, so it's mostly reserved for special projects.

@ 2PacalypseYO4 Er. Mister Liddell destroyed the best American 400 meter runners of HIS generation. He'd probably lose to the best of today's generation because they've had nearly a hundred years of development of both fitness and training regimens, and let's be frank - better and less detectable drugs. But his heid's no' back yet.

On the other hand, the runners of today, if they were training in the condition of the 1920s would likely not beat him.

There is always the personal and individual make up, some by genetic throw and childhood circumstance had been born with a blessed and rare combination to be really faster than average, and there's so much that conditioning and improvement can do to a point, but without the horse genes of speed to begin with _it can not do without. Just think what mr. Lidell with improving training and conditioning as the best Today could do and get provided, outdoing them anyway too if all things were equalled. You cant really compare airplanes of the Time with supersonic jets of Today, but gove any pilot of back then a tour and adapting period and they'll fly, probably meaner than those used to easy ways with Power shots already fixed. Never underestimate the psychological power in Human performances beyond physique, and this Scotsman had an unusual will of steel magnified by his deep spiritual call

Maybe, but keep in mind that Eric Liddell beat Harry Edward, who was the first black athlete to medal in the Olympics in sprinting. Harry won two bronze medals in the 1920 Olympics. Eric Liddell beat him in their races a couple of years later. Archie Williams (black American) won the 400 meters twelve years later in 46.1 seconds, but he got to run with starting blocks and improved spikes. Starting blocks weren’t around when Eric Liddell ran, and he was so competitive that had he kept running and training and gotten to use starting blocks and compete against someone like Archie, I think he would have been running similar times.
