This video has so much charm, thanks for the idea. Birds have been going after my tomato seedlings and it’s been pretty frustrating. Love birds but hate them in the garden.
Thanks, Ebon 😊 It's not my idea but glad it's been of use to you. Likewise, I love birds but not when they're pulling up all the seedlings! Move the position of the scarers as often as you can for maximum effectiveness 😊
Rob's Discovery arh, that makes sense then, well anytime you need someone to keep you warm at night I’ll help you out there, as long as I can bring my big horse lol! He’ll make a good tractor!
I completely love your channel... As a new subscriber, I was checking it out and found this amazing video... I have lots of birds... These little “bird scarers “ are pleasant to the eye... You say it was not your idea... But thank you so much for sharing.. You are a natural teacher... I plan on making several for my garden area and also to share with my friends... 😊
So beautifully effective and easy too. I wonder if instead of cellotape I used a shiny paper clip as an eye catching additional scary effect. I will let you know how it goes. I don't have the same amount of space and seeded areas as you do to protect, but I'm pleased with any help in scaring them away from my garden.
Hello again Beth 😊 A paper clip sounds much better! You're right, it would add extra 'scariness' and probably last longer too! 📎 All the best with that and let us know how it goes! 🌱🐦
Try to paint bright and catching colors, like yellow, orange, red, lavender and whatever u like to make small or big birds to be scared and frightened even when they're far away or in a distance. Ciao!
Thank you for this Rosie and Jim special :) I made one as the alternative was a BB gun lol and since I'm not hitler your idea came through a treat, well worth the 25 min labour, spins nicely and no Pigeon massacre in sight XD
You're welcome, Wayne :-) It's not my idea but worked so well for me I wanted to share it! I'm glad it's working for you so far and saving some avian lives in the process! Rosie & Jim! 😄
I can't take the credit for the idea but I hope it helps! They've been working for me for the past few years. As long as I remember to keep moving them around! 😄
You could put a pebble or a marble in the bottle to accentuate the effect. I'm going to change my method after seeing your idea, thanks for all the great videos.
Rob's Discovery Please do, as I did not mean to denigrate your performance or video; I thought it was brilliant and I’m sure you would make a great children’s presenter!
I feel Rob’s presentation is also beneficial for those in other countries, too! - who may not be familiar with English. He has a way about him that’s appealing for all age groups!
Thanks in a caravan in NZ and those birds! how can i attach this to the pushouts? the windmill is a great idea but how to attach it and have reflective tape all over it will have to make 6 i think great stuff Auckland is in lockdown this will keep me out of trouble
@@robsdiscovery The Caravan from The USA has three pushouts and this is where the birds play and make noise. NZ Auckland at Covid 19 level two now and the rest at level one so maybe i can physically go into hardware tomorrow and get some tape its only $8.00 thanks Noeleen
Is a “pushout” the same as a slide-out? Here in America, the RV’s (I actually prefer the word, Caravan) have what’s called ‘slide outs’ that can expand the square footage of the inner space. Sounds similar.
It works for me. Only if I move them around daily though. The birds get used to them after a while. It's only really blackbirds that concern me here. What type of birds are you trying to deter? 🐦

@@robsdiscovery hi, looked at your cider making video . We have just returned from a fantastic holiday in Somerset, staying in a shepherds hut. Went to see Roger Wilkins and had some of his natural cider. Absolutely fantastic. Was just curious what apples you used please?
How wonderful, Andrew. I'm particularly fond of Roger Wilkins' cider. I seem to remember I used mostly Katy apples with about a third Cornish Aromatics, and a handful of Devonshire Quadrants thrown in for good measure! 🍏😄
@@robsdiscovery Thanks for replying. I am going to have a go at making my own. I live in East Sussex, myself and wife work on fruit farms, and have a variety of apples to choose from. After speaking to Roger, he says he only uses variety’s we have never heard of where we live. So I am going to use a bitter sweet mix and see how it works out.
I've just lost all my bird-scarers during the stormy winds over the weekend 🙄 They lasted a good four or so years though and now maybe someone else who lives downwind can enjoy them! 😄
Thanks, I used to love that table 😆 I agree, it wasn't the best filmimg and was a bit frustrating when I watched back the footage to find is misaligned 🙊 I have a better camera now with an LCD monitor/viewfinder that actually works, plus it swivels too! 🤗 I hope some of the other videos on my channel are more to your liking. Happy bird scaring 😁
Good idea but I’d rather use a knife instead of scissors. And the camera should point to the object in question better, otherwise viewers won’t see what you are doing. Thx for the video.
hehehe, wonderful! I'm going to try tomorrow. I want them to scare away gophers, though, but I figure if I just put them closer to the ground, the gophers will leave just like the birds. We want birds here though. The gophers are so cute, but they have so far eaten our gazanias, zucchini, endive and even some branches of tomato! I even think he was gnawing on the rhubarb! Not a great idea.... Anyhow, hopefully this will chase the gophers off. Peace, Rachel. PS. Where are you from? You sound English but you pronounce your final r's! (I am a language teacher and linguist so I notice these things :) ) ).
Hello Rachel :-) Oh dear! There are rabbits, deer & birds to contend with in the garden but I'm glad there are no gophers here in England! 😄 As you probably realise, there are MANY different English accents. My Rs are because of where I am/grew up in North Somerset. 15 miles further south and they'd be even stronger I'm sure 😄 Let us all know if your gopher scarers are a success!
🤔very good thanks...I shall have to try and make a giant one of these..as extra ammo,to help me in my battle with the birds leaving 💩 on my car...assholes! I only say this as I'm fairly convinced it's been deliberately targeted by them. Ok,when they have to go they have to go...but is not much fun if the local gulls have had a curry for tea, then gotten itself welded onto my paintwork in the sun grrrrrrrrrr. I am finally starting to win the war,and have now altered their flight path, and changed their behaviour. My idea was to buy cheap bird scarer kite (hawk) usually suspended by an extendable rod that can come with it,and/or cord like a normal kite...look good, but that has its flaws and disadvantages in itself (for one, they aren't stupid, and easily get used to things that stay in same place after a few days imho) including fake owls etc too I've tried. Instead I attached a pole (old hoover tube)to fence post near my car, then place a thinner but strong pole inside that one (bringing it all up to max height you choose) then at top of top pole, attach horizontally another pole (bamboo cane works well) then at the end of that a length of wire you choose (2-3 ft works for me)..to attach kite or scarer to...p.s a counterweight of any sort needed at opposite end of kite, few copper fittings or w.h.y...to help control things a bit. Result is I now have a fake hawk kite which ducks, dives and spins etc and is constantly moving around within a circle,in my set zone (i.e over car and around it)...best result I've had so far, easily a reduction in bird 💩 on car by 80-90% I'd say...probably because I also glued eyes (onto it on both sides of its head lol) so if/when it flips upside down in high winds..it's eyes are always watching, and they don't like that one bit lol. I think the crows are the only ones really smart enough to still strut around and semi ignore it really...but still not sure or brave enough to enter my zone at low altitude anyway. So I think the 10-20% of💩 that still get through, are now only as a result of high altitude bombing by them usually (as I witnessed recently)...and was probably a pre planned revenge attack by them. I should maybe patent it lol,but in all seriousness,I'm pretty sure this same method would work over/around area of seedlings too 👍
Sorry you couldn't see properly, Margot. I hope you got the idea? I have a different camera now with a swiveling view finder so this shouldn't be a problem in future videos 😊
