- On our recent trip to Portugal, I wanted to see more than Port (fortified wine) production. Non-fortified Portuguese wines (the actual "wine" component of fortified wine) are being recognized internationally over the last 20+ years as serious, outstanding wines.
Within the Douro Valley are two main regions, The Douro Region and Vinho Verde. Vinho Verde is within the Douro Valley, but is at higher levels, and is the ares producing more non-fortified wine. I visited a representative small winery and, boy was I impressed. It was like a Garden of Eden to me with vineyards, fruit trees, vegetable plots, streams, palms and really good wine and people.
